Case Study

This case study examines a second grade teacher, Ms. Ribeiro, who decided to discuss same-sex marriages and households in her classroom to normalize the domestic situation of one of her students and prevent bullying. She had the students read a book about same-sex partnerships to promote understanding and respect for all families. While her goal was inclusion, her teaching method was obscure and some felt it inappropriately shut down alternative views. Educators have a responsibility to provide knowledge about diverse families to help students become healthy, respectful adults and avoid stigmatization later in life.

Abstract

This paper aims to clarify the domain related to stigmatization, bullying and acceptance of same-

sex parenthood. It is based upon the case study of a second-grade teacher who decided to raise

the topic of gay marriages and households to subsidize the social stigma and any permanent

psychological damage to the children living in the above stated domestic environment. Ms

Ribeiro, the teacher, wanted to normalize a student's domestic affairs by reading a book in her

class related to same-sex partnerships and parenthood and wanted to make other students

understand the concept of respect for all irrespective of their sexual orientation, age or

aspirations. Some basic questions were answered about the pathway to acceptance of the gay

community, proper education of LGBTQ and social stigma related to same-sex households.

Parents are our role models, someone whom we can rely upon and respect. In some ways,

parents shape our future and harassing them in any form should not be tolerated. This paper aims

at preserving our morality, ethics and virtues without judgements.

Keywords: Same-sex, gay, acceptance, LGBTQ, community, bullying, sexual orientation

Case Study 1

Ms Ribiero, a second standard teacher, decided to spark a discussion about the social

stigma related to same-sex marriages and households in her class. One of her students was from

such a background, and Ms Ribiero wanted to normalize the state of her family to subsidize

awkwardness and bullying later in life (Gorski, 2014).

Answer Number 1

Children usually learn about conduct by observing adults (Jones, 2009). Ms Ribeiro

asked Julia and Brandon to read their books when they put Denis in an awkward position for no

fault of her own. Ms Ribiero could have explained same-sex households rather than shutting off

their thoughts (Linville, n.d.). In fact, she could have pointed out the vast differences in people's

personalities, likes and dislikes, and lively hoods.

Answer Number 2

Ms Ribiero's teaching method was a very obscure way of enlightening them about gay

marriages. There are many positive ideas to enforce social diversity and respect for all. Some of

the ideas include the establishment of advocacy and support groups (Lamme, n.d.).

Including LGBTQ parents during planning, organizing, and distribution during school

events would be a great idea to accustom children to diversity (Lamme, n.d.).

Answer Number 3

The school and the faculty have to prepare the students for the future they are to embark upon.

Stigmatized households could have adverse effects on parents and children alike (Lamme, n.d.).

They have the responsibility to give the students the knowledge about homo and

heterosexuality so that they turn out to be healthy and respectful adults. Knowledge is the key;

the lack of it projects into bullying, stigmatization, and depression later in life (Linville, n.d.).
