Population Growth Lesson Plan

This lesson plan outlines a 60-minute lesson on population growth. The objectives are for students to explain population growth concepts, illustrate population growth models, and enumerate factors affecting population growth. Key concepts covered include carrying capacity, limiting factors, exponential and logistic population growth models, and factors like birth rate, death rate, emigration, and immigration. The lesson involves motivation, lesson proper with explanation and examples, evaluation through questions, and an assignment on the next topic.

A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE (BIOLOGY)

I. Objectives: At the end of a 60 –minute lesson, the students should be able to

achieve the following with at least 85% level of success:
A. Explain population growth and its concepts.
B. Illustrate the population growth models.
C. Enumerate the factors affecting population growth.

POPULATION GROWTH
II. Subject Matter: Population Growth
A. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, DLP, markers, cartolinas, etc (for face
to face learning), Phone/Laptop, PowerPoint Presentation, MS Teams App
(for distant learning)
B. References: G.Miller Jr.S.Spoolman (2001). Principles of Environmental
Science. South Triangle, Quezon City. Philippines: C. E. Publishing, Inc.

population.html

C. 21st Century Skills: Remembering, Analyzing, Understanding
D. Science Concepts:
 Population growth is the increase in the number of individual,
plants, animals and other organisms that is living in a place.
 Population can grow, shrink or remain stable.

The 2 Concepts in the Models of Population Growth

1. Carrying Capacity
2. Limiting Factor
Population Growth Models
1. Exponential Population Growth Model
2. Logistic Population Growth Model
Factors Affecting Population Growth
1. Birth Rate
2. Death Rate
3. Emigration
4. Immigration
III. Procedure:
A. Opening Prayer
B. Checking of Attendance
C. Motivation
I will give a short activity to the class and this activity named “Code-
Decode”. The code was written on the cartolina or presented in the ppt
like this:

DV XLMGILO GSV TILDGS

LU EVEIB HKVXRVH
VCXVKG LFI LDM

This code is a gift of enlightenment that we should realize. You

need to decipher the code to reveal these wise words and answer the
questions that follow. I will give only one clue and this was: Z=A

Question: What is the coded message?

Class/Answer: WE CONTROL THE GROWTH OF EVERY SPECIES EXCEPT
OUR OWN.
Question: What does the message convey?
Class/Answer: The message conveys that…
D. Lesson Proper
Question: Today, we’re going to talk about the Population Growth. So,
the question is, “What is Population Growth?”

Answer: Population growth is the increase in the number of individual,

plants, animals and other organisms that is living in a place.

Explain: It refers to the change in the size of a population in which …

Since we are talking about this Population Growth, lets discuss first the
two important concepts under the models of population growth for us to fully
understand it.
First is the Carrying Capacity which is the average population size of a
species in a particular ecosystem…
Do you understand? Give a situation that illustrates Carrying capacity.
(Student: Example of a situation that shows the carrying capacity is…)
Is it clear? Can we proceed to the other concept?
(Class-yes)
Now we have the Limiting Factors which are the environmental factor or
variable that has the capacity to restrict growth, abundance or distribution of a
population in an ecosystem…
This time, I will ask you to fill the idea about examples of limiting factors.

Limiting
Factors

Very good students!

After learning about the two concepts, let’s now tackle the population
growth models wherein the two concepts are used to explain these two.
Exponential Population Growth Model. In this model, the population
increase over time, continuing upward…
(Shows the figure of exponential population growth model)

What is the shape of the curve in the

graph?
(Student: The shape of the curve is…)
That’s right! Now, let’s proceed to second population growth model.
Logistic Population Growth Model. In this model, the growth of most
populations depends at least in part on the available resources in their
environments…
(Shows the figure of logistic population growth model)

What is the shape of the curve in the graph?

(Student: The shape of the curve is…)
Is it clear?
(Class-yes)
Now let’s discuss the factors affecting population growth.
First is the Birth Rate which is the ratio of live births in an area;
expressed per 1000 population per year. The total births over a given period of
a particular species…
After birth rate we have Death Rate which is the ratio of deaths in an
area to the population of that area or the number of a species which die…
Other factors are the emigration and immigration. Migration is the
movement of people in and out the country or the movement of species in and
out in a certain habitat. Emigration pertains to the movement of organism into
a given area from another area. Immigration is the process wherein organisms
moved into a place and stay there permanently.
Now, let me assess you how far have you understood our lesson on the
“Population Growth”.
Why we are studying population growth?
(Student: We are studying population growth because...)
If a parasite destroying barley plants in a field swept through an
ecosystem, what would happen to the bird eating barleys population in the
field?
(Student: It would…)
What are ways to control over population growth?
(Student: The ways to control…)
Have you heard of one-child policy? Do you have any idea about it?
(Student: The one-child…)

IV. Evaluation
Answer the following questions or give what is being asked:
1. What are the different problems related to the growing population
happen to our community?
2. Among the factors affecting population growth of animals, what do you
think affect the population most?
3. As a student, what will you do to help in giving awareness to the people
about our growing population?

V. Assignment
Study the next topic and answer the Enrichment Activity on a one whole
sheet of paper or put it in a word document. Use this format: Arial 11, 1.5
spacing, 1 inch margin for all sides. (10 points) Pass it on the next meeting.
