Sorting Out Materials And Objects
QUESTION AND ANSWERS
1. Describe an activity to show that water is a good solvent.
Any substance in which something is dissolved is called solvent. As we know sugar
is a solute, take some sugar and put it in the water. Stir it for 2 minutes. you will
see sugar get dissolved in water. It proves that water is a good solvent.
2. Classify the following materials on the basis of following:
(glass, smoke, oxygen, cooking oil, ice, ink, wood, orange juice,
common salt, mercury, gold, vinegar, air)
a) States of matter b) Solubility
c) Conductivity d) Hardness

Materials States Solubility Conductivity Hardness

of

Glass, Wood Solid Insoluble Poor Insulator Hard to press
Conductors
Gold Solid Insoluble Good Conductor Hard to press

Ice Solid Soluble Bad Conductor Insulator Partially Easy to

and melt itself) changes its shape on

Common salt Solid Soluble Bad Conductor Insulator(In Hard to press

Cooking oil, Liquid Insoluble Good Poor Easily pressed
Mercury Conductor Conductor
Ink Liquid Soluble Good Conductor Easily pressed

Orange Juice Liquid Soluble Good Conductor Easily Pressed

Vinegar Liquid Soluble Good conductor Conductor Easily pressed
Smoke, Air Gas Partially Poor Conductor Insulator Easily pressed

Oxygen Gas Soluble Poor conductor Insulator Easily pressed

3. Differentiate between transparent, translucent and opaque objects. Give

examples.
Objects
Transparent Translucent Opaque
Allow light to pass Allow light to pass Do not allow light to pass
through them through them partially through them
completely
Clear glass, Clean water, Frosted glass, thin cloth, Wood, metal, etc.,
etc., etc.,

4.Define Classification.
The process of systematically arranging things into groups on the basis of a
common property is called classification.

5.What is the basis of classifying different materials?

Objects and materials can be grouped together on the basis of similarities and
differences in their properties. Such grouping and classification also help us in
understanding the common properties of materials and hence their utility for
making different objects.

6.What is the need of classification?

• Helps in sorting out the objects.
• Make it easier to locate any object quickly i.e., saves time.
• Is convenient to arrange things systematically.
• Helps to identify any object.
• Helps in having systematic knowledge about things.
• Makes study of different objects easier.
• Helps to understand similarities and dissimilarities among different objects.
• Enables us to differentiate between members of different groups.
7.How will you differentiate between solid, liquid and gas?

8.How do you distinguish between miscible and immiscible liquids? Give two
examples of each type.
Miscible Immiscible
Liquids that mix with each other Liquids that do not mix with each
completely other
Eg: Milk and water Eg: Oil and Water

9.Why are handles of utensils like cooker, frying pan etc. made of plastic or
wood?
The handles of cooking utensils are made up of plastic or wood because plastics
and wood are bad conductors of heat. As they are bad conductors of heat
therefore they won't be able to pass the heat of the flame to the person's hand
and will prevent the person from burns or any other injuries.
