Lesson Plan 5 Electrical Installation and Maintenance I. Objectives

This lesson plan aims to teach students about circuit breakers. The objectives are for students to be able to identify circuit breaker parts, check functionality following procedures, and explain their protective role. The lesson will include identifying parts in a PowerPoint, checking sample circuit breakers, and questions to test understanding. Types of circuit breakers will be discussed based on construction and operation. Students will label parts of a circuit breaker and answer assignment questions about load centers and important circuit breaker ratings.

LESSON PLAN 5

Electrical Installation and Maintenance

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the period, 80% of the students would be able to;
a. Identify the parts of Circuit Breaker.
b. Check the functionality of Circuit Breaker following the procedure given
by the learning module.
c. Explain the role of Circuit Breaker in protecting the circuits.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Circuit Breaker
Learning Outcomes 1: Layout and Install Panel Board
References: Installing Electrical Protection (pages 40-44, 46-47)
Materials: Laptop and Projector for PowerPoint Presentation
III. PROCEDURE

A. Routinary Matter
 Prayer
Let us stand for the prayer……
 Greetings
Good Morning Class!
 Attendance
The teacher will call the students one by one and the students
will respond by saying “PRESENT”.
B. Review
 What was your previous topic?
C. Motivation
 Present a picture to your students about “Shield”, and try to extract
their ideas about it in related to electrical protection.

D. Activity
 The class will be divided into four, without having ideas, the students
will be tasked to check the condition of Circuit Breaker, each group will
be given two minutes to do the task.
E. Analysis
 After their performances, call a representative from each group, and
ask “How did you done the activity?”. After their answers, provide
feedback to their performances.
F. Abstraction
Show on the PowerPoint Presentation the Following:
“CIRCUIT BREAKER”

Objectives:
a. Identify the parts of Circuit Breaker.
b. Check the functionality of Circuit Breaker following the procedure
given by the learning module.
c. Explain the role of Circuit Breaker in protecting the circuits.
Circuit Breaker

Circuit Breaker is an Electrical Switch that is designed to protect an

electrical circuit from damage cause by Electricity Overload or Short
Circuit. Unlike a Fuse, which operates once and then has to be replaced, a
circuit breaker can be reset to resume normal operation.
Circuit Breaker Versus Fuse

1. Circuit Breaker acts as a switch aside from its being an over current
protective device
2. When there is an over current, the circuit breaker trips automatically
and after correcting the fault, it becomes readily available for switch on.
Unlike the fuses which has to be discarded and replace after it is
busted.
3. Circuit Breaker can have multiple poles while a fuse can only protect a
single line.
4. Circuit Breaker position is easier to detect, it is closed, tripped or open
right at its handle, while the fuse, on the other hand is not easily
detected because the fusible link is enclosed with casing.
5. Circuit Breaker can be manually tripped so that in many cases it also
acts as the circuit switch.
Parts of Circuit Breaker

Operation of Circuit Breaker

Circuit Breakers operate using one or both of two principles:
1. Thermal Operation relies on the extra heat produced by high current
warming the bimetal strip which bends to strip the operating contacts.
2. Electromagnetic Operation is due to the magnetic field set up bu the
coil carrying the current which attracts an iron part to trip the breaker
when the current becomes large enough.
Types of Circuit Breaker According to Construction
1. Din Rail Type Mounted Crcuit Breakers

2. Bolt Mounted Type Circuit Breakers

3. Plug-in Type Circuit Breakers

How to Check the Condition of Circuit Breaker

1. Prepare the Multitester and Circuit Breaker, and wear Gloves.
2. Get the Multitiester and set its Selector Range Knob to Rx10 ohms.
3. Contact the test prods of Multitester to the terminals of Circuit Breaker,
when the Breaker Handle is pulled down, the Multitester must not show
continuity, while if the Breaker Handle is in up position, the Multitester
must show continuity.
G. Application
Instruction:
A pairing activity, and given the materials needed, the students will be
tasked to check the condition of Circuit Breaker, they will be given one
minute to do the task.
H. Generalization
Ask these following questions:
1. What is Circuit Breaker?
2. What are the types of Circuit Breakers according to construction?
3. What are the types of Circuit Breakers according to operation?
IV. EVALUATION
Instruction:
Identify the parts of Circuit Breaker, write you answers on a ¼ of paper and
answer directly.
V. ASSIGNMENT
Instruction:
Supply the answers of the followings:
1. What are the load center accessories?
2. What are the important ratings when choosing a replacement circuit
breaker?
