Installing A Personal Firewall

The document summarizes a lab assignment involving installing and configuring a personal firewall, port scanning tool, and log viewer. The student set up a virtual lab environment with two VMs to complete tasks involving installing ZoneAlarm on a Windows client, using Nmap to scan ports, and adjusting ZoneAlarm settings to log events at different security levels. The student reported completing all tasks successfully despite some software version differences from the instruction materials.

REPORT ON THE LAB ASSIGNMENT UNDER CHAPTER 1 OF GUIDE TO NETWORK DEFENSE

AND COUNTERMEASURES

1. Installing a Personal Firewall

This part of the lab instruction saw for the installation and configuration of the lab environment that I
used to perform the exercise. The environment consisted of two virtual machines with a simulator called
Vm Ware. I consulted, such as YouTube, and documentation, to configure the environment. The first
task of the lab exercise was to install free ware on a windows 7 client, this was problematic because the
vendor of the free ware no longer supported the OS. So, I implemented the rest of the lab with windows
10 OS. And this part of the labs with smoothly, just that, the were some differences between the version
used in the book and the current version (such as the internet tab and the identity and data was not
available)

2. Installing a Port Scanning Tool

This part of the labs was simple and easy to implement as it only sort for the installation of a single
software (a port scanning software called nmap) and not much configuration was required. It pretty
much plug and play once install. Performing this lab exercise I had no problem s, and got the desired
results.

3. Port Scanning a Target System

This part of the labs required the for me to used my windows client vm as a target machine to find some
data. Also, I was required to scan the network with the Zone Alarm firewall in both the zone types, i.e.
the high zone security setting and medium zone security level, to show how devices belong to these
zones should be treated. Performing this lab exercise I had no problem s, and got the desired results

4. Viewing ZoneAlarm Log Files

This part of the lab required me to install a software called Sawmill which was used to trap and log
events on the network and store in the ZoneAlarm logging system and also change the alert level setting
to be able to scan and capture the required events. Performing this lab exercise I had no problem s, and
got the desired results.
