Question 1 (20 pts) Fig. 1 shows three forces of magnitude F1 = 6 N, F2 = 2


N, and F3 = 4 N act on a package of 5 kg sliding across a frictionless floor

through a 1 m distance. Force F3 is angled down by  = 600. Assume the F2 F1
package is initially stationary.

a/ For the 1 m displacement, what is the net work done on the package by all
forces on the package? Explain the physical meaning of your results.

b/ What is its speed at the end of the displacement?

c/ What is the average power due to the forces during the displacement?

Question 2 (20 pts) A ball of mass m = 100 g is thrown from the top of a building with an initial velocity
of v0 = 10 m/s at an angle of  = 30° above the horizontal. Using energy methods, do:
a/ Determine the kinetic energy of the ball when it reaches the maximum height.

b/ Compute its speed when it is 5 m below the initial position.

c/ If the initial angle  increases, how is the ball’s speed when it is 5 m below the initial position? More
than, less than or the same? Why?

Question 3 (3 pts) Fig. 2 shows a 0.2 kg ball with a speed of vi = 8 m/s strikes a wall at an r
angle of θi = 450 and then rebounds with the same speed vr and angle θr. It is in contact vr
with the wall for 10 ms.

b/ Compute the average force on the wall from the ball? What is the origin of this average

Question 4 (20 pts) Block A of 5 kg with a speed of 3 m/s collides with block B of 10 kg that has a speed
of 2 m/s in the same direction. After the collision, block B travels in the original direction with a speed of
2.5 m/s.

a/ What is the velocity of block A immediately after the collision?

b/ How much does the total kinetic energy of the system of two blocks change due to the collision?

c/ Suppose that block B ends up with a speed of 4 m/s, what is the change in the total kinetic energy?
Explain the physical meaning of your result.

Question 5 (20 pts) In Fig. 3, a solid sphere of radius R = 5 cm and


mass M = 2 kg rolls from rest a D = 50 cm distance down a  = 300
incline. Assume that the incline and the horizontal surface have the D

a/ Compute the angular velocity at the bottom of the incline. 
b/ Determine the angular acceleration of the sphere on the incline. Fig. 3
c/ If the sphere and a marble of radius r = 5 mm release together from
rest at the initial location, is the sphere’s time to the bottom more than, less than, or the same as the
marble’s? why?

less than or the same? Why?

Question 1 (20 pts) Fig. 1 shows a 2 kg package sliding rightward across a


frictionless floor through a distance d = 20 cm while three forces act on the  F3
package. The two horizontal forces have the magnitudes F1 = 5 N and F2 = 1 F2 F1

a/ Compute the force F3 in vector notation.

b/ Determine the net work done on the package by all forces on the package. Explain the physical meaning
of your results.

Question 2 (20 pts) A ball is thrown from the top of a building with an initial velocity of v0 = 8 m/s at an
angle of  = 30° above the horizontal. The kinetic energy of the ball at the top of its flight is 1.2 J. Using
energy methods, do:

a/ Compute the ball’s mass.

b/ Compute its speed when it is 3 m below the initial position.

c/ If the initial angle  decreases, how is the ball’s speed when it is 3 m below the initial position? More
than, less than or the same? Why?
