Functional description
The SL 220 allows observation, diagnosis and documentation of the anterior
eye segment, including the lens and vitreous body. The SL 220 is designed
for the complete application area of a typical slit lamp. It is used by
ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians.
The slit lamp consists of an instrument base (with joystick) onto which an
illumination system (slit projector) and an observation unit (stereomicroscope
with binocular tube and eyepieces) are mounted. The illumination system
and the observation unit can be swiveled independently of each other
around the same vertical axis. The head of the patient lies on the head rest.
Using a fixation lamp, the user can direct the patient's eye as desired. The
illumination system generates a slit image which can be modified in length,
width, position and brightness and which has a specified distance from the
slit lamp. The user can adjust each of the modifiable parameters of the slit
image using the controls. The observation unit allows the user to observe
the eye segment to be examined in selectable magnification steps. The
magnification changer is a Galilean system with telecentric beam path. The
user can position the slit lamp in relation to the examined object in all three
axes using the joystick of the instrument base so that the desired
observation area of the eye is in focus. Using different illumination methods,
variable slit images and filters, it is possible to view almost all eye segments.

28 Operation of the device
Preparations
Slit lamp
• Set interpupillary distance of binocular tube.
• Adjust the eyepieces:
Make sure the eyepieces are pushed up to the stop. Pull out the eyecups
when you do not wear spectacles and you have no need to compensate
ametropia (e.g. contact lens wearers). If you wear spectacles push the
eyecups in. Set the diopter setting ring on both eyepieces to 0 D. Users
who need to compensate ametropia should set their refractive powers at
the diopter scale of the eyepieces.
Make a note of the eyepiece settings for future use.
If more than one physician uses the device, it is recommended that a list
be prepared with the individual refractive powers and kept in a handy
location near the device.
• If an SL cam 5.0 or another camera system via beam splitter and DigiCam
Adapter is mounted to the stereomicroscope, please factor in any device
ametropia due to manufacturing tolerances. Device ametropia can be
compensated by performing the following steps:
− Make sure the eyepieces are completely plugged in and the eyecups
pulled out (for spectacle wearers: pushed in).
− Turn the diopter setting ring on both eyepieces fully in a "+" direction
(anti-clockwise) as far as it will go.
− Place a target in front of the SL 220 (e.g. business card attached to
forehead rest).
− Center the slit projector and binocular tube to the slit lamp base.
− On the slit lamp, choose the highest magnification.
− Open the slit.
000000-2115-784-GA-GB-260717
Operation of the device 29
− Use the joystick control to focus the slit lamp on the target while
observing the camera image on the monitor.
− If the camera image on the monitor is in focus, lock the SL 220 using
the quick-action lock.
− Close the illuminating slit to a narrow line.
− On the slit lamp, choose the lowest magnification.
− Adjust the focus plane of each eyepiece separately. Look through
each eyepiece in turn, rotating the diopter setting ring for the
eyepiece through which you are looking in the "−" direction
(clockwise) until the target, e.g. the surface of the paper, is sharply in
focus.
− Select the other magnification steps on the slit lamp.
− The image should remain sharply in focus at all magnifications. If not,
the procedure should be repeated.
− Make a note of the eyepiece settings for imaging for future.

30 Operation of the device
Setting brightness
• Switch the device on at the power switch (3, Fig. 8) of the power supply
unit.
• Then turn the brightness control (13, Fig. 6) on the instrument base to
the desired brightness. The left final position of the control corresponds
to minimum illumination intensity. Turning the control allows continuous
adjustment of brightness. The right final position of the control
corresponds to maximum illumination intensity.

Operation of the device 31
Tonometry
• The measuring prisms must be disinfected and undamaged.
Therefore, we recommend the use of several measuring prisms.
• Please refer to the instructions for use and disinfection of tonometer
measuring prisms at our website and in the manual of the AT 030
applanation tonometer.
• The instrument table must be horizontal to avoid movement of the slit
lamp with attached tonometer towards the patient. This is of particular
importance when taking tonometric measurements without locking the
instrument base.
Therefore, we recommend that you always fix the instrument base as
soon as the measuring prism touches the cornea.
000000-2115-784-GA-GB-260717
32 Operation of the device
Gonioscopy
• Contact glasses must be disinfected and undamaged.
• To cover different angular ranges, the illumination angle can be varied
relative to the horizontal between 0° and 20°, in steps of 5° when
latching the lever for the vertical inclination angle (angle of incidence)
(10, Fig. 5).

54 Electromagnetic compatibility
Note 1: At 80 MHz and 800 MHz the higher frequency range applies.
Note 2: These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by
absorption and reflection from structures, objects and people.
a
Field strengths from fixed transmitters, such as base stations for radio (cellular/cordless) telephones and land mobile
radios, amateur radio, AM and FM radio broadcast and TV broadcast cannot be predicted theoretically with accuracy. To
assess the electromagnetic environment due to fixed RF transmitters, an electromagnetic site survey should be
considered. If the measured field strength in the location in which the SL 220 is used exceeds the above applicable RF
compliance level, the SL 220 should be monitored to ensure normal operation. If abnormal performance is observed,
additional measures may be necessary, such as re-orienting or relocating the SL 220.
b
Over the frequency range 150 kHz to 80 MHz, field strengths should be less than 3 V/m.
