TECHNIQUE.
OBJECTIVE:
The Objective of the present task is to prepare a suitable conducting polymer and calculate the
molecular weight of polymer. Confirm the structure of the polymer using IR spectroscopy technique.
BLOCK DIAGRAM:
METHODOLOGY PROPOSED:
A) Conductivity of POLYVINYL ACETATE:
They are filled with specific additives, such as metallic powders or metallic fibers, carbon
black, ionic conductive polymer and intrinsically conductive polymer powder. PVA exhibits the
electrical conductivity of 1.63 × 10−12 Scm−1 at room temperature. The
electrical conductivity of PVA/graphite oxide nanocomposites gradually increases as the
concentration of GO increases and shows maximum value at 0.4 wt % of GO and then decreases up
to 1.0 wt % of GO.
5
B) Molecular Weight of Polymer:
The flow property of a polymer solution depends on the nature and molecular weight of a
polymer. If η and ηo are the absolute viscosities of a solution and the pure solvent respectively, t and
to are corresponding flow times. Relative viscosity of the solution is given as
η /ηo= t/to=ηr,
And the specific viscosity ηsp, which is the relative increase in viscosity is ηr-1.
C) Confirm the Structure of the Polymer using IR spectroscopy Technique:
Molecules are made up of atoms linked by chemical bonds. When energy in the form of
infrared radiation is applied and equally match with the natural frequency of vibration (the movement
of atoms and chemical bonds at its characteristic vibration called as natural frequency vibration), it
causes vibration between the atoms of the molecules. Absorption of IR radiation takes place and a
peak is observed. Different functional groups absorb characteristic frequencies of IR radiation. Hence
gives the characteristic peak value. Therefore, IR spectrum of a chemical substance is a finger print
of a molecule for its identification. The infra red region ranges from 12,500 cm -1 to 100 cm-1. The
regions are classified into three types as follows. Near infrared region range from 0.8-2.5 µ(12,500-
4000 cm-1). Main infrared region range from 2.5-15 µ (4000-667cm-1) .Far infrared region range
from 15-200 m µ (667-100 cm-1)
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:
A) Preparation of Polyvinyl acetate:
Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) is a polyvinyl polymer. Polyvinyl acetate is prepared by the
polymerization of vinyl acetate monomer (free radical vinyl polymerization of the monomer
vinyl acetate).
6
B) Calculate Molecular weight of polymer by Ostwald Viscometer:
Ostwald Viscometer is first thoroughly washed and rinsed with water. About 10-15 mL of
distilled water (solvent) is pipetted into the viscometer and the time taken to flow from point a
to b of the viscometer is noted as t0. Accurately 1g of polyvinyl acetate is weighed and
dissolved in 100 mL of distilled water. From the stock solution, a series of solutions with
different concentration solutions, say 10 mL + 90 mL solvent (10 %), 20 mL + 80 mL solvent
(20 %), 30 mL + 70 mL solvent (30 %), etc. are prepared.
The flow times of the solutions are measured and the relative viscosity, specific viscosity
and the reduced viscosity are calculated. A graph is drawn by plotting reduced viscosity
against concentration and the straight line obtained is extrapolated to the zero concentration.
The intercept gives the value of the intrinsic viscosity, using which the molecular weight of
polyvinyl acetate is calculated.
C) Confirm the structure of the polymer using IR spectroscopy technique:
Sample prepared for IR spectral analysis should be transparent to IR radiations so it allows
the radiations to pass through them. Hence the salts like KBr, NaCl, and AgCl are used for
mixing of sample in order to obtain the accurate IR spectrum of a sample with good intensity,
sharp peaks and high resolution.IR spectrum of a sample is recorded by passing a beam of IR
light through the sample. When the frequency of the IR is the same as the vibrational
frequency of a bond / collection of bonds, absorption occurs. Examination of the transmitted
light reveals how much energy was absorbed at each frequency (or wavelength). This
measurement can be achieved by scanning the wavelength range using a monochromator.
Used for analyzing samples with covalent bonds. Simple spectra are obtained from samples
with few IR active bonds and high levels of purity. More complex molecular structures lead
to more absorption bands and more complex spectra.

CONCLUSION:
I’ve selected polyvinyl acetate polymer and found its molecular weight, that is 143747 gmol-1
and the function group of this polymer is confirmed by IR spectroscopy. The enhancement of
electronics can only done by nano particles or polymers. Using Ostwald’s viscometer method and
FTIR spectroscopy we will be able to identify.
