Capital University of Science and Technology: Assignment 1

This document contains an assignment for a nuclear power plants course, which includes 10 multiple choice questions about critical size, moderators, reactor types, and safety features of nuclear power plants. It also includes 2 numerical problems about a pressurized water reactor system diagram and calculations for working fluid ratios, steam bleed fraction, and cycle efficiency. The student is asked to answer the questions and solve the numerical problems, making diagrams as needed to explain the answers.

Assignment 4 (Nuclear Power Plants)
a; s

Date of Submission: NIL

Assignment 1
Question 1- Answer Questions 1 to 10 from the following Problem set
Question 2 – A pressurized water reactor power plant operates at pressures and temperatures as
shown in Figure. The steam leaving the heat exchanger is at 50 bar, dry saturated and
the condensate is saturated to the saturation temperature of the bled steam at 5 bar in
an open feed heater. Assuming all processes to be ideal and neglecting pump work
estimate (a) the ratio of the working fluids in the two circuits, (b) the fraction of the
steam supply which is bled from the turbine, and (c) the cycle efficiency

PROBLEM SET
Note: Please make the diagram to explain your answer.
Q-1 What do you mean by critical size and critical mass?
Q-2 Explain the function of a moderator. What is the criterion of its
effectiveness?
Q-3 What is a thermal reactor? What is a fast reactor?
Q-4 Explain the characteristic features of a PWR. With the help of a schematic diagram, explain
the working of a PWR
Q-5 What is the function of pressurizer in a PWR?
Q-6 Explain the characteristic features of a BWR
Q-7 What is a CANDU-type reactor? Explain with a sketch its main features.
Q-8 What is a Calandria?
Q-9 What are the safety features of a nuclear power plant? How the safety has been improved
since the inception of Nuclear Power Plants – Give salient safety features of Gen-III reactors.
Q-10 Radiation and radioactive material can be released from a nuclear reactor. What features are
introduced in nuclear power plants to protect the public from adverse effects of radioactivity?
