L I. LEARNING SKILL
At the end of this activity, you are expected to illustrate laws of sines
and cosines.
The Law of Sines and Law of Cosines are relationships between the sides and
angles of non-right (oblique) triangles.
Law of Sines:
If a triangle has sides of lengths C
a, b, and c opposite the angles
A, B, and C, respectively, then
𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐴 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐵 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐶
= 𝑏 = 𝑐 .
𝑎
a b
From the relation, we can create
3 proportions:
𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐴 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐵
(1)
𝑎
= 𝑏
B A
𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐵 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐶 c
(2) =
𝑏 𝑐
𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐴 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐶
(3) =
𝑎 𝑐
The Law of Sines is very useful in Example 1: Two angles and one side
solving oblique triangles when
you know the following
information:
Two angles and one side (SAA
Case and ASA Case)
Two sides and an angle opposite
one of these sides (SSA Case)
a. Missing side: c b. Missing side: b
𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝐴 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐶
Since 𝑎 = 𝑐 ,then the 𝑚∠𝐵 = 68° (The 𝑚∠𝐴 + 𝑚∠𝐵 + 𝑚∠𝐶 = 180°)
𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝐵 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴
Equation is, Since 𝑏 = 𝑎 then the
𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝟒𝟐° 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝟕𝟎°
= Equation is
𝟔 𝒄 𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝟒𝟐° 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝟔𝟖°
=
𝟔 𝒃
1
Example 2: Two sides a. Missing angle: ∠A b. Missing side: b
and an angle opposite 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝐴 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐶
Since 𝑎 = 𝑐 ,then the
𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝐵 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐶
Since 𝑏 = 𝑐 then the
one of these sides Equation is, Equation is
𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝐴 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝟏𝟐𝟎° 𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝟑𝟎° 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝟏𝟐𝟎°
= =
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟗 𝒃 𝟏𝟗
Law of cosines:
The square of the length of one side is
equal to the sum of the squares of
the other two sides minus the product
of twice the two sides and the cosine
of the angle between them.
In any ABC,
𝑎2 = 𝑏 2 + 𝑐 2 − 2𝑏𝑐(𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴)
𝑏 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑐 2 − 2𝑎𝑐(𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐵)
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 − 2𝑎𝑏(𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐶)
The Law of Cosines can be used in the following situations:
• two sides and the included angle are known.
• three sides are known.
Example 1: Example 2:
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 − 2𝑎𝑏(𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐶) 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 − 2𝑎𝑏(𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐶)
𝑐 = 292 + 392 − 2(29)(39)(𝑐𝑜𝑠49°)
2
9 = 32 + 72 − 2(3)(7)(𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐶)
2
32 + 72 − 92
𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐶 =
2(3)(7)
