Module IV. Lesson 1

This document outlines the steps taken to research the problem of students' lack of sleep. It defines the problem as students not getting enough sleep, which affects their cognitive capacity. Potential solutions are identified, such as establishing a regular sleep schedule and avoiding caffeine before bed. The group plans to distribute surveys to gather information over 1-2 weeks with a budget of 500-1,000 pesos. As surveys are analyzed, the group will monitor their progress in addressing the problem and effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive ability. They believe they have correctly solved the problem by identifying issues and providing appropriate solutions.

Module IV.

Lesson 1

GROUP 2 Members:

Cabalteja, Nikki G.

Cabaya, Jasmine Daphne M.

Callanta, Wilgen Fides

Castro, Prince Randy

Caud, Mark P.

RESEARCH TOPIC: Students’ Lack of Sleep

STEP 1. Problem Identification:

Do we actually have a problem?

YES

STEP 2: Problem Definition and

Representation: What exactly is our
problem?

The problem with this subject would be the student's lack of sleep, therefore it
will affect their cognitive capacity.

STEP 3. Strategy Formulation:

How can we solve the problem?

The following are ways that may help to solve the problem regarding to the
problem:

 Know and get the required sleep hours

 Keep a regular sleep schedule

 Fine-tune the sleeping environment

 Exercise regularly

 Avoid caffeine and alcohol

 Wake up early

 Savor the last hour before bed

 Deal with worries before bedtime

STEP 4. Organization of Information: How

do the various pieces of information in
the problem fit together?
A sleepy person’s brain works harder-and accomplishes less. The lack of
adequate amount of sleep has been shown to have many affects on an individual.
Diminished alertness and cognitive performance, impaired reaction time, attention,
working memory and logical reasoning are only few of the effects that the lack of an
adequate amount of sleep can have on person. Students today have such busy
schedules, however if they better understood the positive effects that this can have
on their brain, then perhaps they would take a deeper look in their sleep habits. Since
it appear that sleep affects the body and mind in many ways, it seems imperative that
that the effects on student’s cognitive capacity be addressed.
STEP 5. Resource Allocation: How
much time, effort,money, etc.,should
I put into this problem ?

The problem with the research will take 1-2 weeks, as a thorough analysis and
evaluation of the research will be carried out. Financial expenses will consist of
printed survey forms for respondents. If it's going to be done by a group of students.
The cost would range from 500-1,000 pesos. The group conducting this study should
be supposedly open to different challenges that they may face during the course of
the study.
STEP 6. Monitoring: Am I on
track as I proceed to solve the
problem?

As the instruments to be used in the survey will be given to respondents, this

will provide an overview of the issues and other concerns to be addressed and will
then be analyzed in depth. That said, it is possible to conclude that the group is well
on its way to solving the problem.
STEP 7. Evaluation: Did I solve
the problem correctly?

Yes, the group had solved the problem correctly and this is evident because we
had addressed the issues that we extracted from the main problem.

Some of the few effects of sleep deprivation on the student's cognitive capacity
are as follows:

 Diminished alertness and cognitive performance

 Impaired reaction time and attention and;

 working memory and logical reasoning

Sleep is essential for cognitive functioning, and that how good our sleep is
depends not only on the length and quality but also on the timing relative to our
natural sleep onsets. Therefore, the solutions we provided will be of great help in
solving the problem of students having lack of sleep that will affect their cognitive
ability.
