The document outlines Vedic measurements of time from the smallest units to the largest cosmic cycles. It describes:
1) The basic time units like kastha, kala, and muhurtha that make up a day and night.
2) How human months and years relate to timescales in other realms like Pitruloka and Devaloka.
3) The durations of the four yugas (Krita, Treta, Dvapara, Kali) and how they combine in a Mahayuga and Manvantara.
4) How multiple Manvantaras make up a day of Brahma and how their combination equals the duration of cosmic cycles like

VEDIC MEASUREMENT OF TIME -
extracts from book of Stephen Knapp (Vedic
scholar)
|
15 winks of the eye (15 sala kannu mitikso samaya) = 1 Kastha
30 Kasthas = 1 Kala 30 & 1/10 Kalas = 1 Muhurtha 30 Muhurtha = 1 day + 1 night (15 muhurtas for day & 15 muhurtas for night) 30 days + nights = 1 month 12 months = 1 year
1 human month = 1 day for pitris (pitruloka) - This means 15 days of Shukla paksha (bright half of the month) = 1 day & 15 days of Krishna paksha(dark half of the month) = 1 night for pitris.
1 human year = 1 day for devas (celestials/dieties - devaloka ) - This means 6 months of Uttarayana = 1 day & 6 months of Dakshinayana = 1 night for devas. 360 such divine days(means 360 human years) = 1 year of devas (ie 1 divine year or celestial year)
Calculation of time of Yugas is done on the scale of celestial years (ie year of Devas)
Timings of the Four Yugas
Each Yuga is preceded by morning & evening called Sandhya & Sandhyamsa.
Krita-yuga = 4000 divine years, Sandhya = 400 divine years, Sandhyansa = 400 divine years. Total = 4800 divine years x 360 days = 1,728,000 human years. Treta-yuga = 3000 divine years, Sandhya = 300 divine years, Sandhyansa = 300 divine years. Total = 3600 divine years x 360 days = 1,296,000 human years. Dvapara-yuga = 2000 divine years, Sandhya = 200 divine years, Sandhyansa = 200 divine years. Total = 2400 divine years x 360 days = 864,000 human years. Kali-yuga = 1000 divine years, Sandhya = 100 divine years, Sandhyansa = 100 divine years. Total = 1200 divine years x 360 days = 432,000 human years. 1 cycle of Krita + Treta + Dwapara + Kali + sandhyas + sandhyamshas = 1 Maha Yuga 1 Maha Yuga = 4800 + 3600 + 2400 + 1200 = 12000 celestial years = 12000 x 360 = 43,20,000 human years. 72 Maha Yugas = 1 Manvantara 1 Manvantara = 8,64,000 celestial years = 8,64,000 x 360 = 31,10,40,000 human years. Each Manvantara is governed by a Manu. After every Manvantara the devas, sapta rishis etc all change. 14 Manvantaras = 1 day of Brahma = 31,10,40,000 human years 1 day + 1 night of Brahma = 1 Kalpa = 8,64,000 + 8,64,000 = 1728000 celestial years = 17,28,000 x 360 = 62,20,80,000 human years. At the end of a Kalpa, everything except Brahmaloka(Tapoloka) is destroyed. This is called Naimittika Pralaya. 360 such days of Brahma make up 1 year of Brahma & 100 such years is the lifetime of Brahma That means lifetime of Brahma = 36000 Kalpas = 36,000 x 1728000 celestial years = 62,20,80,00,000 celestial years = 62,20,80,00,000 x 360 human years which means 1 life time of Brahma = 2,23,94,88,00,00,000 human years. AT THE END OF LIFE OF BRAHMA EVERYTHING IS DESTROYED & MERGED INTO THE SUPREME POWER - The PARABRAHMAN. This is called Prakrita Pralaya
