HERITAGE DOCUMENTATION - Project Brief
HERITAGE DOCUMENTATION - Project Brief
PROJECT BRIEF
Objective: The primary objective of the project is to understand how the spatial character of a city is
dependant on the intangible anchors of a city or region and vice versa. The project also seeks to
implement the methods of documentation in order to understand the significance of intangible
heritage and the analysis of the said methods to bring about the identity of spaces.
Selection of Site: Each group will be assigned a site for detail study and analysis.
List of Sites:
• Patadakkal
• Halebidu, Karnataka
• Shimoga, Keladi, Ikkeri
• Madurai, Tamil Nadu
• Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
• Orchha, Tikamgarh
• Bhojpur, Bihar
• Charaideo (Che-Rai-Doi)
• Jinji, Satara, Pune
• Thiruananthpuram, Padmnabhpuram, Kollam
• Cuttack, Orissa
Parameters for Site selection: Students are required to formulate a set of parameters justifying their
choice of site.
• Geographic location
• Historical Significance
• Cultural Significance
• Scope of work in terms of Cultural mapping
• Justification for research
For cultural mapping, a set of parameters is taken as a starting point for detail research and analysis.
Geographic Setting- Location of site, Political boundary, climate, major access points, population.
Topographic study of the city- Contour analysis: Topographic location of the city, the ridges and
valleys, major rivers which govern the fabric of the city.
Major historic periods- Mughal, Colonial, Post-Colonial etc. Period along with major rulers.
Evolution of the city through the historic timeline. Major historical events, Mythological events and
stories, Oral history etc.
B. NATURAL PARAMETERS
Study of Open spaces- Mapping and analysis of the landscape features both man-made and natural
(Forests, gardens, groves, grasslands, agricultural fields, water bodies, canals etc.) [ Blue, green and
brown open spaces]
C. CULTURAL PARAMETERS
Understanding the Intangible aspects of the city which evolved with the historical timeline.
Community and social construct. Festivals, fairs, rituals, traditional beliefs, Food, Costume, Artistic
expressions (traditional arts and crafts, music, dance), harvesting and cultivation system, traditional
methods of irrigation and agricultural products.
Associating the lunar calendar with the religious rituals and beliefs.
D. TANGIBLE PARAMETERS
Understanding the heritage fabric of the city through spatial analysis of the tangible with respect to
the intangible aspects.
• Spatial character
• Function
• Construction method and materials
Response of the built with the open spaces. How the built fabric functions with the street network,
water sources and the green spaces. Identification of character zones of settlements if any.
E. OUTCOME
The primary objective or expected outcome of the project is to develop further understanding in the
methods of documentation of cultural landscape of a space. The parameters will bring about the
necessary data through documentation. Students are expected to analyse the data acquired and
produce a set of maps and sheets which explores the character of the chosen city and also the present
condition of the cultural aspects of the city.
F. DELIVERABLES
Number of maps might increase depending upon the requirement of the parameters.
Sheets analysing the maps will have to be provided in the same sheet size mentioned above.
