handsome, and resourceful hero of Ithaca, his hometown. Although Odysseus’ journey home
was a long and hard challenge, his cleverness got him and his crew through several different
unimaginable beasts, horrible and treacherous storms, as well as punishment from the Gods.
During his epic quest, Odysseus’ crafty mind comes to life when him and his shipmates escape
from Polyphemus the Cyclops, when he disguises himself as a poor vagabond when he finally
reaches Ithaca, and when making a decision whether to pass Scylla, the six headed monster, or
In Book 9, as the hostile Polyphemus, son of Poseidon, tried to eat Odysseus’ men,
Odysseus was able to devise a plan to evacuate Cyclopes’ island so that they wouldn’t be eaten.
Odysseus gets Polyphemus drunk and tells him that his name is Nobody . The Cyclops yells,
“Nobody’s killing me!” After the one-eyed monster collapses of intoxication, the crew stabs
Polyphemus in the eye and then escape the island on the underbellies of his sheep. Once they
are all safe on board, Odysseus reveals his true identity and Polyphemus asks his father,
Beginning in Book 14, after a long and tough time riding the waves, Odysseus finally
reaches Ithaca, only to find that his city is somewhere he doesn’t even recognize, disguised by

Athena. Upon arriving into town, Odysseus disguises himself as a poor beggar and is able to
trick everyone that he is just a beggar and not Odysseus including all the suitors and even his
wife Penelope. Odysseus is able to complete all of Penelope’s challenges and ends up revealing
his identity after becoming the champion of the competition to win Penelope ’s hand in
marriage. Odysseus was able to use being disguised as a beggar to his advantage since all of the
suitors underestimated him and Odysseus was even quick enough to shoot Altinous with an
In Book 12, after being trapped on the island of Circe, Odysseus and his crew must
either pass by and encounter Scylla, a six-headed monster, or Charybdis, a huge whirlpool.
Either way, Odysseus would be losing men on his ship and he had to choose which path would
be the better one and most beneficial. Using his ingenuity, he chose to pass by the six headed
monster, resulting in only losing six shipmates instead of risking all of his men and even the ship
Overall, Odysseus’ legacy and heroic traits got him through the journey from Troy to
Ithaca. Everytime there was a problem or a plan had to be created, Odysseus found a way to
get out of it or be able to trick the right people. With Odysseus’ wit, he was able to get through
everything and reach the love of his wife Penelope and his home sweet home of Ithaca.
