Question Bank for Module II
MICROWAVE NETWORK THEORY AND PASSIVE DEVICES
1. List the reasons why Z,Y,h and ABCD parameters cannot be used to measure voltage and current at
microwave frequencies?
At microwave frequencies the physical length of the component or line is comparable to or larger than the
wavelength. Hence Z,Y,h and ABCD parameters cannot be used to measure voltage and current at microwave
frequencies due to following reasons:
1. Non availability of terminal voltage and current measuring devices or equipments.
2. Short circuit and especially open circuit are not easily achieved for a wide range of frequencies .
3. Presence of active devices in microwave circuit makes the circuit unstable for short and open circuit.

2. Define and derive properties of S-parameters?

3. Discuss various losses in microwave devices or circuits in terms of S-parameters?
4. Prove that impedance and admittance matrices are symmetrical for a reciprocal network?
5. Derive S matrix representation of multiport or N- port network
6. A shunt impedance Z is connected across a transmission line with characteristic impedance Z O. Find the
S-matrix of the junction?
7. Two transmission lines of characteristic impedanceZ1 and Z2 are joined at planepp1. Express S-
parameters in terms of impedance when each line is matched terminated
8. What are attenuators? Explain different types of attenuators? With a neat figure explain working of
precision type variable attenuator and derive its S-matrix?
9. What is a phase shifter? With a neat diagram explain the working of a precision rotary phase shifter also
derive expression for various sections of phase shifter?
Precision type rotory shifter:
10. What are waveguide Tees? Derive S-matrix for E-plane and H-plane T with neat diagram of each of
them?
11. A 20mWw signal is fed to into one of the collinear port 1 of a lossless H-plane T-junction. Calculate the
power delivered through each port when other ports are terminated in matched load?

12. In an H-plane T junction compute power delivered to the loads of 40ohm and 60ohm connected to arms
1 and 2 when a 10mW power is delivered to the matched port 3?
13. What is magic-Tee? Derive its scattering matrix?
14. A magic-T is terminated at collinear ports 1 and 2 and difference port 4 by impedances of reflection
coefficients 𝜞1-0.5, 𝜞2=0.6 and 𝜞4=0.8 respectively. If 1W power is fed at the sum port3, calculate the
power reflected at the port 3 and the power transmitted to the other ports?
15. Discuss different types of coaxial connectors?
16. Derive the S matrix for a two port network with mismatched load?
Figure shows some of examples for mismatched network with fig(a) shows two waveguides joined to
form a step junction and fig(b)shows coaxial to waveguide adopter.fig(c) shows 2 port network used for
calculating S parameters respectively
equations, S parameters for a two port network is found.
17. Express S-parameters in terms of Y Parameters?
18. Express S-parameters in terms of Y Parameters?
