WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

Science 5 Quarter 3 Week 6

The Factors that Affect the Strength of the Electromagnet

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ______________

Most Essential Learning Competency

 Design an experiment to determine the factors that affect the

strength of the electromagnet (S5FE-IIIi-j-9)

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain how magnetism produce electricity and vice versa

2. Tell how the strength of an electromagnet be changed
3. Identify the ways by which the materials can be connected to
produce a good electromagnet
4. Construct a simple electromagnet
5. List down the importance of electromagnets in our society

Time Allotment: Week 6

Key Concepts:
(Science 5 LM pp. 148-151)

Electromagnets work just as well as permanent magnets. In fact,

they are even more useful, because you can turn them on and off.
Electricity and magnets are closely related to each other.

 Electricity can generate magnets, while

magnets can generate electricity. A
magnet is usually made of iron. It can
attract objects such as pins, coins and
other materials made of iron and steel.
A nail is not a magnet, but it can be
turned into one. This is done by coiling
a wire around it and then letting
electricity flow through it. Doing this Figure 1: ELECTROMAGNET

 An electromagnet attracts like a real magnet. It can attract materials
made of metals like pins and thumbtacks. The iron nail acts as a
magnet while electricity is flowing through the coil of wire. It can be
made stronger by using more coils of wire. Each turn of the wire adds
more force to the electromagnet.

 The number of dry cells also affects the strength of an electromagnet

and, therefore, stronger magnetism is produced. The size of the iron core
also matters. The greater the size of the iron core, the stronger
magnetism an electromagnet has.

 Electromagnets are temporary magnets. When electricity stops flowing

through a coil of wires, the nail stops attracting any metal or magnetic
material.

 Electromagnets have may uses such as many appliances, modern

gadgets, and even toys are made of electromagnets. It is also used in
transmitting signals through telephones, radio, and television. Some
commercial establishments make use of generators, transformers, and
motors which are made of electromagnets. A crane that lifts heavy
objects is also made of electromagnets.

Activity No. 1- Let’s Explore

What you need:

 2 batteries (2 Class D Battery 1.5 volts)

 large iron nail no.3 or no. 4
 Magnetic Wire (300 cm. long)
 thumbtacks
 pins

What to do:

Note: Make sure that the iron nail does not have any rust. BE
CAREFUL
IN HANDLING MATERIALS.

1. Make an electromagnet by winding the

magnetic wire around the large nail.

2. Connect both ends of the magnetic

wire to a dry cell.

3. Test the electromagnet by placing some pins and thumbtacks near the
nail.

4. Loosen the coil of wire in the electromagnet and find out how many
metals are attracted to the nail. Now wind more coils of wire. (Setup B)

5. Add more dry cells to the electromagnet. Make sure you connect the
dry cells properly. (Setup C)

6. Change the nail into a smaller one. (Setup D)

Directions: Complete the diagram below by writing down the effects of the
following variables on the strength of an electromagnet. Write
your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Answer Key

Activity 1
1. Each turn of the wire tightly, adds more force to the electromagnet.
2. It can be made stronger by using more coils of wire.
3. The number of dry cells also affects the strength of an electromagnet and, therefore, stronger
magnetism is produced.
4. The size of nail does not affect the strength of an electromagnet.

Guided Questions:

1. Yes
2. Setup C, because the number of dry cells also affects the strength of an electromagnet and,
therefore, stronger magnetism is produced.
Activity 2
1. Make an electromagnet by winding the electrical wire around the large nail.
2. Connect both ends of the wire to a dry cell.
3. Test the electromagnet by placing some pins and thumbtacks near the nail.
4. Loosen the coil of wire in the electromagnet and find out how many metals are attracted to the
nail. Now wind more coils of wire.
5. Add more dry cells to the electromagnet. Make sure you connect the dry cells properly.

Guided Questions:
1. This is done by coiling a wire around it and then letting electricity flow through it. Doing this turns
the nail into an electromagnet.
2. The number of dry cells and the greater the size of the iron core, the stronger magnetism an
electromagnet has.

Activity 3

3. toys 8. transformers
4. telephones 9. motors
5. radio 10. floor polisher
Guided Questions:
1. The advantage of using electromagnets, they are more useful and convenient to use compared
to normal magnet. The disadvantages of using electromagnets, they are temporary magnets.
When electricity stops flowing through a coil of wires, the nail stops attracting any metal or
magnetic material. When there is no electricity, electromagnets stop any magnetic activity.
