These guidelines provide direction for writing a 2-page article in 20 minutes for the ISSB entrance exam. Article Writing at ISSB Quick Notes


ISSB has recently introduced a 20 minutes article (2 pages). The size and time frame hardly fits in an
essay writing in classic sense; however, give the background of the candidates it can be a good
exercise.
These notes are meant as quick guidelines for article writing at issb.
Knowledge
The topic is expected to be such that candidate have adequate knowledge about it. Normally social,
cultural and general awareness matters.
Preparations
• Try to learn from guidelines and pattern mention in these notes.
• Practice writing any topic of your interest keeping time (20 minutes).
• After writing, show it to parents, teachers, family to get suggestions for improvement.
• Write 4-5 practice articles on different topics to get fluent.
• Be bold and courageous
• Write neat and with least errors.

Points to Remember
• Read topic carefully.
• Plan your writing. Prepare quick, draft outline.
• Use your inner voice.
• Be moderate and suggestive.
• Write in small sentences.

How to Attempt at ISSB


• Arrange thoughts on rough paper - Time 5 minutes (example at the end).
• Introduction - 1 para - 1/3rd of page - 3 minutes
• Discussion/Main Points - 1.5 page - 10 minutes

Introduction
• Mention broadly what you have understood from topic.
• Mention gist of what you are going to cover in your paper (based on outline you have made).
Many people write introduction after writing article.
Discussion/Main Points
• Broad understanding of the topic what it means in your opinion.
• Different components / sub components or types/ variations of the aspect mentioned in the
topic.
• How the topic effects different people/organizations – i.e., importance for different people (Can
be pros / cons or advantages / disadvantages of doing or not doing a particular thing).

• What all is needed to done (or can be done) for achieving the dictates of the Topic. How it can
be done.

Conclusion/ recommended way forward


• Your conclusion should consist of three to five strong sentences.
• States the overall outcome of your arguments and suggest way forward.

Sample Draft / Rough Notes:


Topic: Definition of Successful Life
• What is a success?
• Different for different person and time (success of student, parents, Muslim, solider, citizen etc.
• Type / stage of success – exams, profession, learning skills, overcoming disease, keep Allah and
parents happy, living good family life.
• Things which help in succeeding: correct direction, hard work, healthy mind / body, +ve
attitude, sharing, support from others / Allah, prayers.
• Things which make success difficult – laziness, fear of competition, lack of challenge/ faith/
focus, time wastage.
• Indications of successful person:
✓ Is willing to change (flexible).
✓ Listens and learns (curious).
✓ Not fearful of unknown.
✓ Values diversity.
✓ Courage, not too cautious.
✓ Seeks self-improvement.
✓ Happy when other succeed.
✓ Contentment
• What to do – to be successful: Islam’s teaching, consistency, dedication and passion is key.
• Role of others – govt (create better environment for living, learning and excelling), elders (help
and encourage).
