GOETSCH–WINCKLER HOUSE

Area: 6,880 m²
Location 2410 Hulett Rd
Okemos, Michigan
Built: 1940
Architectural style: Usonian
Added to NRHP: 13 December 1995
Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright
This house is a modest, one-story Usonian house with a strong horizontal emphasis due in part
to the stepped eaves and extreme cantilever of the roof over the carport. The house is oriented
east-southeast to west-northwest and its plan is arranged to provide maximum privacy as well as
a free-flowing interplay of nature and building. The exterior walls are primarily sheathed with
wide horizontal redwood boards with recessed battens that form long horizontal bands around
the perimeter of the structure. (Reference: Michigan Modern, Goetsch-Winckler House

due to the design principles of Ar. Wright as he believes in simple geometric shapes and strong use of
horizontal and vertical lines.

Stained concrete in four-foot squares complements similarly sized sheets of plywood along the ceiling.
Clerestory windows run throughout the home as does a board-and-batten-style pattern on the walls.
The view from a bank of casement windows draws you into the Studio, a large and versatile living space,
where the ceiling rises to reveal a ribbon of clerestory windows upon which the roof appears to float.
This house exemplifies Wright’s desire to “bring the outside in” as heh wanted to integrate the
surrounding landscape into the building. (Reference: Goetsch-Winckler House
