Lab Report: Submitted To

This lab report summarizes experiments on diode clipper and clamping circuits. The diode clipper circuit removes either the positive or negative half of an input signal. The diode clamping circuit shifts the entire input signal up or down to set either the positive or negative peak at a desired level, using a capacitor, diode and resistor. Circuit diagrams and explanations of how each circuit works are provided. The objective is to study applications of diodes in these clipping and shifting circuits.

NAME OF THE EXPERIMENT: Study of Diode Clipper

Circuit

Objective:
To study the application of diodes in different clipping circuits.

Introduction:

Limiter or clippers are used to cut-off or eliminate a portion of an ac signal.

A limiter can be realized by using diode and resistor as shown in Fig .

Theory:

The circuit with which the waveform is shaped by removing a portion of

the applied wave is known as clipping circuit. The Diode Clipper, also
known as a Diode Limiter, is a wave shaping circuit that takes an input
waveform and clips or cuts off its top half, bottom half or both halves
together. This clipping of the input signal produces an output waveform
that resembles a flattened version of the input. A clipping circuit consists
of linear elements like resistors and non-linear elements like junction
diodes or transistors, but it does not contain energy-storage elements like
capacitors. Clipping circuits are used to select for purposes of
transmission, that part of a signal wave form which lies above or below
a certain reference voltage level. Thus a clipper circuit can remove
certain portions of an arbitrary waveform near the positive or negative
peaks. Clipping may be achieved either at one level or two levels.
Usually under the section of clipping, there is a change brought about in
the wave shape of the signal.

Circuit Diagram
As we know the clipper circuit prevents the output waveform from
exceeding the certain level and at the same time it does not distort the
reaming part of the waveform. As it is a parallel clipper circuit, and
also a negative clipper circuit because the diode is in a reverse
position. And during this time the diode will turned on and it will act
as a short circuit and the output of the signal will be 0. when the input
supply voltage becomes greater than the battery voltage then the diode
is reverse biased by the input supply voltage. As a result, the signal
appears at the output. During the negative half cycle, the diode is
forward biased by both input supply voltage and battery voltage. So
the complete negative half cycle is removed at the output.

NAME OF THE EXPERIMENT: Study of Diode Clamping

Circuit.

Theory:

A circuit the places either the positive or negative peak of a signal at a

desired level is known as a clamping circuit. In other way, a clamper is
an electronic circuit that changes the DC level of a signal to the desired
level without changing the shape of the applied signal. The dc
component is simply added to the input signal or subtracted from the
input signal. A clamper circuit adds the positive dc component to the
input signal to push it to the positive side. Similarly, a clamper circuit
adds the negative dc component to the input signal to push it to the
negative side. If the circuit pushes the signal upwards, then the circuit is
said to be a positive clamper. When the signal is pushed upwards, the
negative peak of the signal meets the zero level. On the other hand, if the
circuit pushes the signal downwards then the circuit is said to be a
negative clamper. When the signal is pushed downwards, the positive
peak of the signal meets the zero level. The construction of the clamper
circuit is almost similar to the clipper circuit. The only difference is the
clamper circuit contains an extra element called capacitor. A typical
clamper is made up of a capacitor, diode, and resistor. Some clampers
contain an extra element called DC battery. The resistors and capacitors
are used in the clamper circuit to maintain an altered DC level at the
clamper output.
Circuit Diagram
As we know the clamper circuit moves the whole signal up or down to
set either the positive peak or negative peak of the signal at the
desired level. During the negative half cycle, the battery voltage
reverse biases the diode when the input supply voltage is less than the
battery voltage. For this the signal appears at the output. When the
input supply voltage becomes greater than the battery voltage, the
diode is forward biased by the input supply voltage and hence allows
electric current through it. This current will flow to the capacitor and
charges it.
