GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

General Safety Precautions

This section provides information related to the safety issues for which all personnel working with the STAT must be aware The
information is general and concerns the risks associated with both the operation and the maintenance of the drive.
To work on or with the STAT operators and maintenance personnel must be knowledgeable about all the safety precautions described in
this section. They should be especially knowledgeable in working with high voltages and frequencies.

All electrical maintenance and installation operations on STAT must be performed by qualified
CAUTION! technicians.
All standard electrical safety procedures must be followed:

Never touch anything within the drive until verifying that it is neither thermally hot nor
electrically live.
Always wear insulated or rubber safety shoes and wear safety glasses.Never work alone.
Never connect any grounded meters or oscilloscopes to the system.
Never remove safety shields.
Always use extreme caution when handling components or taking measurements inside the
enclosure.
The chassis (frame V excluded) does not have internal fuses. Suitable fuses must be provided immediately upstream the drive. See
paragraph 1.8 for fuse selection.
DANGER! RISK OF FIRE, HEAVY DAMAGE OR INJURIES! Never operate the drive without line fuses or using line fuses different
from the ones specified for it. Wrong fuses may cause fire, heavy damage to equipment and/or nearby connected parts, or possible
injuries to personnel. Some units need separate line fusing for blowers and auxiliary circuits.

Do not apply power to the drive if any moisture, dust or caustic/corrosive chemicals may have entered the cabinet or internal
components.

DANGER! RISK OF FIRE, HEAVY DAMAGE OR INJURIES! STAT drives are open type devices and must be installed strictly as
instructed in the STAT USER’S MANUAL and in full compliance with existing industry norms and regulations.

DANGER! STAT and all connected devices MUST BE SUITABLY GROUNDED.

DANGER! RISK OF FIRE, HEAVY DAMAGE OR INJURIES! The voltages on the output terminals of STAT are dangerous when
the drive is energized, even when the drive is not running. Again, be aware that the motor load could spin at any time as soon as the
power supply is connected.

If installed in the cabinet, never run the drive with cabinet doors open.

DANGER! RISK OF DEATH OR ELECTRICAL SHOCK! The following safety steps must be strictly adhered to before servicing the
unit:
♦ Perform supply power lockout/tagout procedure and open the main disconnect to
D AN G E R the drive.

♦ Make sure that all power supplies coming into the drive (main supply and auxiliary
supplies) are disconnected before servicing the drive.

♦ Before servicing the unit or accessing the motor terminals wait at least 3 minutes
after disconnecting all input power supplies. Refer to the safety label that is placed
on every drive.

DANGER! RISK OF FIRE, HEAVY DAMAGE OR INJURIES! Never store flammable material in, on or near the drive enclosure.

iv IMSTAT003I
GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Do not change the insulation distances or remove insulating materials and coverings.
Co-ordinate motor and drive voltage and current ratings.

If isolation tests on the motor and cables must be performed, disconnect the cables from the drive first. Hi-potential tests must not
be performed on drive components.
Use caution not to damage any part of the drive while handling.

Protect the equipment from adverse and excessive environmental stresses (temperature, humidity, vibration, shock, etc.). If
equipment must be temporarily stored outdoors, special precautions must be taken. (See the next pages for a complete list of
acceptable environmental limits)

DO NOT
Operate the drive in excess of 10% of its maximum rated input voltage.
WARNING
Apply power to STAT output terminals.
Connect STAT drives in parallel, directly on the output terminals

The drive contains components sensitive to electrostatic charges; such components may be damaged if
WARNING
incorrectly handled. During replacement or maintenance operation of the electronic boards, the
following steps must be adhered to:

• Use a maintenance kit for electrostatic charges. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) precautions must
be taken.
• Wear properly grounded static strap.
• Handle a PC board by holding it by its edges.
• Boards must not come into contact with highly insulating materials, for ex. plastic sheets,
insulating surfaces, parts of synthetic fabrics.
• Boards must be placed only on conductive surfaces.
• Boards must be packaged in conductive sheets before shipping.

1. INTRODUCTION

SILCOSTART is a static three-phase starter for squirrel-cage induction motors able to start and stop the motors with an adjustable
acceleration and deceleration ramp.
The power bridge consists of a couple of antiparallel thyristors for each phase.
The working principle is based on the choking of the line voltage; the motor’s terminal voltage is linearly increased until the nominal value
is reached with ensuing increase of the angular speed of the motor itself.
It is used in the following applications: water systems, ventilation, and each time the starting of big motors having a constant steady
operation (without adjustment) is required.

1.1 Advantages deriving from the SILCOSTART starter

Starting and deceleration time adjustment

Eliminating the mechanical shock in the transmissions
Reducing the pickup current to the required value
Reducing the torque peak to the motor axis
Replacing the traditional starters
Easy installation

2.7.1 CT charge resistors.
The resistors mounted on terminals X56,X57(R193)-X58,X59 (R194) of the P board, connected in parallel, determine the Silcostart
output current; the voltage between the positive terminal X57 (or X59) and the negative terminal X56 (or X58) is proportional to the
current: 2Vaverage correspond to three times the converter’s rated current, voltage present also on terminal X5 of the CONSSA board.
NOTE:
definitions: IN = converter’s rated current :maximum current output by Silcostart in 12 starts/hour (10" /
300").
IaT = motor rated current :maximum current absorbed by the motor in steady condition
IaN = motor working rated current = K1 x IaT K1=coefficient< 1
IaM = motor working maximum current = K2 x IaN K2=coefficient> 1
The relation Rp = 2 x NS /3 IN (#)
where: NS = TA turn ratio , Rp = (R193 x R194) / (R193 + R194) [ Ω ] is valid.
The resistor values R193,R194 are set below.

3 PUTTING INTO OPERATION GUIDE

3.1 BEFORE PUTTING INTO OPERATION

• Check the state of conservation.

• There should be no damage deriving from storage in damp or acid environments.

• Check to see if the equipment is complete: compare with the provided diagrams.

SILCOSTART converters are tested and customised in the Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali workshops; if special performances are requested,
it is advisable to check the functionality through tests.

N.B. If the components are replaced during the regulation optimisation, open the contactor and turn off the equipment.

WARNING.

The person in charge of the putting into operation must be trained to take the proper measures so as to work with the plant operating at
750 V in compliance with the current standards in force.
Power electronics knowledge is required.

3.1.1 Preliminary verifications.

Check that SILCOSTART is provided with ASIROBICON test certificate.

Power up the equipment and check that:

1. The operations of the relays and of the contactor are in compliance with the diagram.
2. CONV.OK led on the SPAV1 is on; if it is off, check the cause of intervention on the latter and eliminate it.
3. CONSSA board DL05 (power) led is on.
4. The L1,L2,L3 supply voltages of the bridge are in phase with the synchronism transformer supply (XM2 terminal board, P
board, terminals U,V,W respectively).

Turn off the equipment.

The following pages indicate the operations to be carried out for board customisation and the actions to be taken in order to start an
induction motor; the three different control configurations of the latter can be summarised in the following way:

• VOLTAGE RAMP CONTROL

• CONSTANT CURRENT CONTROL

• CONSTANT ACCELERATION CONTROL

• VOLTAGE FEEDBACK CONTROL (PUMPS)

TARSSA (calibration) board

It does not need any customisation.

1. Operations to be carried out with unpowered drive.

Open the START contacts (XM1-5,XM1-6) and ramp enabling (XM1-7,XM1-8).

Power up only the control:

check on the CONSSA board if the DL05 (power) and DL04 (conv.OK) leds are turned on and check on the SPAV1 interface, if the
CONV.OK. led is turned on.

2. Operations to be carried out with powered up drive (control and power).

Close the START command by checking that the led DLO2 (enable) on the CONSSA board is turned on, as well as the ENABLE led on the
SPAV1 interface.

When the ramp enabling contact (XM1-7,XM1-8) is closed, the motor accelerates from zero to its maximum speed within the set time
(see fig.1); during all this phase, the current will adopt the value set by the charge resistant torque.
ATTENTION! In this operating mode, the current is not controlled; if too short starting ramps are used, very strong over-
currents can occur and stop the converter (see fig.2).
The decrease or increase of the voltage ramp can be calibrated by turning the P6 trimmer present on the TARSSA board counter-
clockwise and clockwise respectively.
By opening the ramp enabling contact, the motor decelerates depending on how the ramp time is set by means of the P6 trimmer; there
are two kinds of stopping:

• by inertia when the ramp time is smaller than the typical inertia time of the used motor

• with a deceleration curve when the ramp time is greater than the typical inertia time of the motor used.
It is possible to decrease or increase the stopping time by turning the P7 trimmer present on the TARSSA board counter-clockwise and
clockwise respectively.

1. Operations to be carried out with unpowered drive.

Customise the connecting plates from CV1 to CV22 according to the table.
Keep the START(XM1-5, XM1-6) and ramp enabling (XM1-7, XM1-8) contacts open.
Power up only the control:
After powering up the control, check on the CONSSA board if the DL05 (power) and DL04 (conv.OK) leds are turned on and check on the
SPAV1 interface, if the CONV.OK. led is turned on.

2. Operations to be carried out with powered up drive (control and power).

Close the START command by checking that the led DLO2 (enable) on the CONSSA board is turned on as well as the ENABLE led on the
SPAV1 interface.

By turning the P4 trimmer slowly counterclockwise, the current flow in the motor must be observed by means of the SPAV1 interface,
signalling: CURRENT ON (the intensity of the led is proportional to the intensity of the circulating current, when the latter will be big
enough, the led will be extremely bright).
By increasing the rotation of the P4 trimmer, the motor will start turning; after a while the following situations can occur:
1) The motor turns at a constant speed smaller than the maximum speed.
2) The motor stops.
In both cases, the converter’s output current must be increased by means of the P4 trimmer clockwise rotation.
Figures 5 and 6 show (once the maximum output current limits are set) a starting from zero at maximum speed, with a maximum limit
(three times In), and a limit equal to two times the rated current (In), respectively.
In the first case, the motor will accelerate from zero at its maximum speed in a shorter time.
By opening the START contact, the motor will stop following a deceleration curve set by the charge.

the connecting plate on the 200 V voltage must be customised
Customise the C6 capacitor and the position of the P6 and P7 trimmers so as to set the acceleration/deceleration time.

1. Operations to be carried out with unpowered drive.

on.
Turn the trimmer of the RP (XM1-14,XM1-15) reference in such a way as to apply the maximum reference voltage (10 V) on the
corresponding terminal.
2. Operations to be carried out with powered up drive (control and power).

Close the START command by checking that the led DLO2 (enable) on the CONSSA board is turned on as well as the ENABLE led on the
SPAV1 interface.
By closing the "ramp enabling" switch, the motor will accelerate from zero at its maximum speed within the set time (see fig.7); during
this phase, the current will adopt the value required to maintain linear the speed of the motor. The decrease or increase of the voltage
ramp can be calibrated by turning the P6 trimmer counterclockwise and clockwise respectively.
During the acceleration phase, the current must not exceed the maximum limit that can be set (3In); should this occur, the condition
shown in fig.8 will take place, i.e. the speed will not follow the set reference until the current has not reached the maximum limit.
By opening the ramp enabling contact, the motor decelerates with a linear ramp if the deceleration time by inertia is smaller than the one
set (see fig.9), otherwise it will stop with its own deceleration curve (see fig.10). It is possible to decrease or increase the stopping time
by turning the P7 trimmer counterclockwise and clockwise respectively.

3.5 PUMPS FUNCTION (“STAP” OPTION)

The STAT includes an optional Pump Control function which is more effective than the standard soft stop, reducing fluid surges or
hammering in a pipe line system.
This function reduces the motor speed, by controlling the output voltage in a closed loop system.
The Pumps Function requires to install a voltage transducer inside the STAT.

Voltage Transducer 5335.2

The output voltage of the STAT is connected to the input terminals U-V-W of the board.
The output of the voltage transducer is isolated from the input and his value is 6,2V at the maximum output voltage of the STAT for
every value normalized of STAT voltage power supply.

current regulator: R15 =40kΩ C3=0.22µF C4=0.22µF
N.B.: The value of these components must be verified during the start-up.
Customise the capacitor C6 and set the trimmer P6 and P7 position according the acceleration/deceleration time of the application.
1. Operations to be carried out with unpowered drive.
Customise the jumpers from CV1 to CV22 according the table.
Open the START contacts (XM1-5,XM1-6) and ramp enabling (XM1-7,XM1-8)
Power up only the control:
check on the CONSSA board if the led DL05 (power) and, if the jumper CV/ is closed on 1_2, the led DL04 (conv.OK) are turned on
and check on the SPAV1 interface, if the CONV.OK. led is turned on.
2. Operations to be carried out with powered up drive (control and power).
Close the START command by checking that the led DLO2 (enable) on the CONSSA board is turned on, as well as the ENABLE led on the
SPAV1 interface.

When the ramp enabling contact (XM1-7,XM1-8) is closed, the

motor accelerates from zero to its maximum speed within the
set time (see fig.1); during all this phase, the current will have
the value necessary to keep the motor voltage matching to the
set downstream the ramp.
The decrease or increase of the voltage ramp can be calibrated
by turning the P6 trimmer present on the TARSSA board
counter-clockwise and clockwise respectively.
During the acceleration the current must be lower tha the
maximum limit value (3In); on the contrary the motor voltage
will not match to the set downstream the ramp.
By opening the ramp enabling contact, the motor decelerates
with a linear ramp if the deceleration time by inertia is smaller
than the one set (see fig.9), otherwise it will stop with its own
deceleration curve (see fig.10). It is possible to decrease or
increase the stopping time by turning the P7 trimmer

In case of failure, the first thing to do is to check if the SPAV1 board is working by closing the test button led set on the board; only in this
way you will be sure that the leds mounted on the board are working.

5. MAINTENANCE.

The maintenance of the starter implies above all a scheduled inspection.

Keep in mind that the cleaning and installation in environments that are not too hot and do not have vibrations are the first precautions
against malfunction problems during the operation and favour the long life of the components.

5.1 Suggested scheduled maintenance operations.

1) After turning off the equipment, remove the dust and dirt from the circuits by using a vacuum cleaner or a compressed air jet.
2) Check to see if there are any loosened or disconnected terminals.
3) Check that the connectors and terminals are perfectly inserted.
