CHBI308 Super Pro Project

This document provides information for a batch fermentation design project. It includes the stoichiometric coefficients for the overall reaction, kinetic data using a Monod model, and specifications for the fermentor design. Students are asked to list assumptions for the operation, generate a graph of composition over time by linking data from the fermentor profiles to an Excel file, and make observations from the graph.

CHBI 308 – Reaction Engineering

SuperPro Fermentor Design Project

Assignment date: 12.05.2021 Due date: 02.06.2021 17:00 pm
This project aims to use a batch kinetic fermentation operation to calculate and view the profiles
of reactants and products in the broth during a batch fermentation operation. The table below
provides the stoichiometric coefficients of the overall reaction. This information comes from
experimental data.

Reactants Products
Component Mass Component Mass
Stoichiometric Stoichiometric
Coefficient Coefficient
Media 100.00 Biomass 28.00
Oxygen 70.00 Carb. Dioxide 70.00
- - Impurity 10.00
- - MAB 2.00
- - Water 60.00

The kinetic data are specified through the following table:

Equilibrium Equation Type Monod

Substrate Media
Rate Reference Component Biomass
B-Term Biomass
μmax 0.2 h-1
Ks 35 mg/L

The calculated reaction rate refers to Biomass formation (dX/dt) since Biomass was selected as
the Rate Reference Component.
Other specifications are the following:
- The chemical formula of the biomass is CH1.8O0.5N0.2. The molecular weight of the
impurity and the product MAB should be defined as 18 g/mol.
- Air and Water streams should be separately added in addition to the inlet stream.
- The inlet stream should contain biomass and media.
- In addition to the product stream a vent stream should be added for the disposal of gases.
- The inlet water, media, and biomass amounts are 7800, 375 and 5 kg, respectively.
- Heating time and setup time for the heating operation are 24 min and 0 min.
- Cooling time and setup time for the cooling operation is 64 min and 5 min.
Please answer the following:
a) What are the main assumptions in this operation? Please write them with your reasoning. (30)
b) Plot the fermentor reactor composition (g/L) (Biomass, MAB, and media) as a function of time.
Write down your observations. (70)
Note: To generate the graph please do the following:
1) Go to the “Profiles” tab of the “Batch Kinetic Fermentation” operation and specify the variables
that are asked for
2) Right click on the reactor and select “Dynamic Data records\FERMENT-1\Excel Link\Edit”
3) In the Interface that appears select your excel file, worksheet and location (cell or range) where
you wish the data to be saved.
