Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC):

Identify necessary network materials in accordance with established procedures and check
against system requirements.

MOTIVATION:

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master configuring
computer systems and networks. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.

PRESENTATION OF LESSON:

Introduction:

What I need to know?

After dealing with the safety precautions related to networks, you can now proceed with the next
session of this module which is networking devices, media and connector.

 Describe network cables

 Understand differences Straight through and Crossover type of network cabling
 Discuss the color scheme of T568A and T568B Standardization of network cabling
What’s new?
Despite the rapid growth in wireless technologies, many computer networks in the 21 st century continue
using cables as a physical medium for devices to transfer data. The different types of cables exist, each
designed for specific purposes.

Development:
What I know
Pre Test: Multiple Choice Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write the chosen letter on a
separate sheet of paper.
1. Which of the following type of cable that is used for telephone communications and Ethernet
networks
a. coaxial cable c. fiber optic cable
b. twisted pair d. multimode cable
2. What type of cable that has a thicker core than single-mode cable.
a. multimode c. twisted pair
b. single-mode d. untwisted pair
3. Which of the following is not a coaxial cable type?
a. thicknet (10Base5) c. RG-6
b. RG-59 d. Cat3
4. What type of cable that has two or four pairs of wires?
a. coaxial c. shielded twisted pair/STP
b. unshielded twisted pair/UTP d. fiber optic
5. What type of UTP cable in which wiring is used for telephone systems and Ethernet LAN?
a. Cat5 c. Cat3
b. Cat5e d. Cat6
6. Which of the following where each of wire is wrapped in metallic foil to better shield the wires from
noise.
a. coaxial c. UTP
b. fiber optic d. STP
7. It is a coaxial cable used in networks operating at 10Mbps, with a maximum length of 185 meters.
a. RG-59 c. thinnet
b. RG-6 d. thicknet 15
8. What type of cable which is made of glass or plastic conductor that transmit information using light?
a. fiber optic c. twisted pair
b. coaxial d. shielded twisted pair
9. It is mostly used for cable television in U.S.?
a. RG-59 c. thinnet(10BASE2)
b. RG-6 d. thicknet(10BASE5)
10.What type of coaxial cable with more than bandwidth and less susceptibility to interference?
a. thicknet b. thinnet c. RG-6 d. RG-59
What’s in?
When you install a new device or program, you sometimes need to configure, which means that you
need to set various switches and jumpers (for hardware) and to define values of parameters (for
software). Thanks to technological advancements, such as plug-and-play, much of this configuration is
now performed automatically.

What is it?
ETHERNET CABLING
Ethernet cabling connects network devices like modems, routers and adapters. They send data
using the Ethernet protocols. There are eight color coded wires in cabling. These wires are twisted into
4 pairs of wires. Each pair has a common color theme. One wire is solid colored wire and the other is
primarily white wire with a colored stripe. The twist are important because they counteract the noise
and interference.
There are two basic ethernet cable pinouts- straight through and crossover. Ethernet cables can
come in two forms when it comes to wiring:

1. STRAIGHT THROUGH WIRING DIAGRAM

2. CROSS OVER CABLE WIRING DIAGRAM

How to Make an Ethernet Cables?

The ability to create an internet cable can come in handy, whether the user needs to
create a specific ethernet cable or needs to fix existing one.

With some practice and following the standards procedure, the cables will work well,
below is the outline of the material and steps necessary in creating an ethernet cable

To do this:

1. First, determine the type of cable to be used. Newer networking

hardware, switches and routers are connected with a straight
through.
2. Get the right tools. The user should have a spool of UTP cable. If
the network is Gigabit ethernet, use Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable.
3. Skin off the cable jacket

4. Untwist each pair and straighten each wire

5. Cut all the wires

6. Insert the wires into the RJ45 connector

7. Place the connector into crimping tool, squeeze hard so that the handle reaches its full swing.

8. Use a cable tester to test for proper continuity.

What’s more

Assimilation

What I can do?

Direction: List down equipment’s/materials made of cable in your house and identify its type.

What I have learned?

A. Matching Type.

Direction: Match the cable type in column A with their meaning in column B. Write the letter of the
correct answer on separate sheet of paper.
A B
___1. Twisted pair a. A cable that has two or four pairs of wire.
___2. Coaxial cable b. Each pair of wire is wrapped in metallic foil.
___3. Fiber optic cable c. A copper-cored cable surrounded by a heavy shielding.
___4. UTP cable d. Is a type of copper cabling that is used for telephone
communications.
___5. STP cable e. A glass or plastic conductor that transmits information using
light.
