PRELIMINARIES
Student Teacher’s Code of Ethics
A. Preamble
A student-centered perspective Mandate: A joint
subcommittee consisting of members from two standing
committees of the Faculty of Education (Faculty of Education
Ethical Review Board and Student Standing) was created to
develop a Code of Ethics for Student Teachers and to examine the
ways in which this Code will be communicated to students, faculty
members and educational partners.

Goals and rationale: The interests of the two Standing

Committees of the Faculty of Education promoting appropriate
ethical and professional conduct have led us to develop the
following Code of Ethics for Student Teachers. This code seeks to
respond to, and address the following needs:

 The code addresses the interdependent duties, rights and

responsibilities of student teachers, faculty members and
educational partners.
 By addressing common issues and needs, the Code seeks to
articulate and make disciplinary boundaries. These
principles reflect the fundamental values that are expressed
in the duties, rights and responsibilities of all involved
Teacher Education.
 The Code requires a reasonable flexibility in the
implementation of common principles. It is designed to help
those involved in Teacher Education, as a matter of sound
ethical reasoning, to understand and respect the contexts in
which they work and accommodate the needs of others.
 The Code seeks to encourage continued reflection and
thoughtful response to ethical issues. It does not seek
definitive answers to all ethical questions or situations.

Rather it seeks to outline the guiding principles to

ethical conduct and to identify major issues which are
essential to the development and implementation of this
Code. Context of an Ethics framework for student teachers.
The principles and norms guiding ethical conduct are
developed within an ever-evolving complex societal context,
elements of which include the need for reflective action and
ethical principles. Education is premised on a fundamental
moral commitment to advance and construct knowledge and
to ensure human understanding and respect for individual
and collective well-being and integrity. The moral imperative
of respect translates into the following ethical principles that
assume a student-centered perspective as articulated in the
Quebec Curriculum Reform and Competencies outlined for
Teacher Education.
B. Academic freedom and responsibilities Teacher’s enjoyed and should
continue to enjoy important freedoms and privileges. However, with
freedoms come responsibilities and ethical challenges. This Code of
Ethics is in keeping with the philosophy and spirit of the New
Directions that are embedded in the document Teacher Training:
Orientations, Professional Competencies (Ministere de l’Education
2001) and the contexts of teaching have changed. Thus, new
resources (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) are required to practice
the profession and meet the challenges of teaching and learning in
whatever contexts students teachers may find themselves and to
encourage in professional development individually and with others.

C. Ethics and law “Teaching is governed by a legal and regulatory

framework” (MEQ p. 120). The law affects and regulates the standards
and norms of teaching behaviors in a variety of ways such as
respecting privacy, confidentiality, intellectual property, competence.
Human rights legislation prohibits discrimination and recognizes
equal treatment as fundamental to human dignity and well-being.
Teaching should respect the spirit of the Canadian Charter of Rights
and Freedoms particularly the sections dealing with life, liberty and
the security of the person as well as those involving equality and
discrimination and the education Act that sets out the obligations and
rights of teachers.

D. Guiding Ethical principles Ethical student teachers should respect

the following guiding ethical principles:

1. Respect for human dignity. Speaks and acts towards all

students with respect and dignity; and deals judiciously with
them at all times, always mindful of their individual rights and
personal sensibilities, Reflects the dignity and responsibilities
of cooperating teachers, peers, principals, parents and other
professionals or para-professionals within the school, school
board and community.
2. Respect for vulnerable persons. Respects and recognizes ethical
obligations towards vulnerable persons. This principle
recognizes that students teachers are in a privileged
relationship with those students and their families and will
always refrain from exploiting that relationship in any form or
manner.
3. Respect for confidentiality and privacy. Respects the
confidential nature of all information related to students and
their families and will share such information in an appropriate
manner only with those directly concerned with their welfare.
Respects the confidential nature of all information related to all
school personnel and will share such information in an
appropriate manner.

4. Respect for justice. Respects and recognizes the right of

individuals to be treated with fairness and equity and the
importance of avoiding conflicts of interests.

5. Respect for safety of students. Respects the right of individuals

to expect that student teachers will engage in practices that aim
to ensure the physical, psychological and emotional safety of
students.

6. Respect for existing ethical codes and professional standards.

Respects the authority, roles and responsibilities of the
cooperating teacher and agrees to adhere to the responsibilities
and obligations for teachers as outlined in the Education Act,
Faculty and University handbook as well as all local agreements
by host school boards and schools.

7. Balancing harm and benefits. Acknowledges that any

potentially harmful practices (eg. Science Labs and Physical
Education Activities) must be conducted in a prudent informed
manner.

INTRODUCTION

“The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish
to learn”. –John Lubbock

Welcome to my portfolio. I am Judith C. Besenio, a student of SPJ

International Technology Institute–Tinambac Campus, under the program
Bachelor of Technical Teachers Education.

Education is a life-long process of learning and to become an efficient

and effective the strategies, tactics and teaching styles that best suit him/her.

It is the time of trial and error and for growing confidence and beginning
expertise. It is not a time of perfection of striving for competence. Through
students teaching, a process whereby a potential teacher’s confirms to
himself/herself and others that he/she as the resourcefulness to survive with
educator, you must first understand the value of continuous learning because
this would be the teacher’s tool in molding the individuals into a better and
more competitive one.

The first major step in moving from amateur status toward gaining
competencies that mark the real professional is the student teaching
opportunities to the educational theories and methods into practice.

Student teaching is the first and foremost a learning situation. This is

the craft before he or she has to put his/her own classroom. This is the
student teachers chance to learn from his mistakes without causing harm to
his/her students. This is the experiences that would serve as their credential in
their path.

As we all know, teaching is a noble profession. It requires a long

preparation and more training sessions for them to be equipped in facing the
real environment that awaits them in near future.

Student teaching serves as an internship in the profession education

where theories, knowledge, attitudes and skills develop through course work
and observation are fused into more meaningful interpretation through
practical experience in actual teaching situation.

I present this portfolio for you to read about my philosophy if teaching

and experiences during my Practice Teaching/Off Campus Training. My goal is
to show you my strengths that would make me an effective teacher.

REFLECTION

Student teaching gives me unforgettable experiences that I

can’t really forget. I considered this as diamond that no one can
steal due to its magnificent and value. It gives me also a lifelong
experience that even how many decades or whatever phenomenon
occur, all the moments and experienced I’ve encountered in the field
of my student teaching will stay fresh in my thoughts and
perception.

Some challenges that I’ve encountered with were making of

lesson plans, socializing and coping up different attitudes of
students and the many task or requirements given to us by our
cooperating teachers.

I remember all the feelings during the time of difficulties and

hardships came to meet that time that I almost to give up and quit
because of tiredness, weariness and hopelessness. It really tested
myself whether this was really my fashion or career to be fulfilled
with or not.

Providentially, I was able to surpass all those challenges due

to mu fortitude and with the help, guidance and assistance give to
me by my very supportive parent and kind cooperating teachers.

PERSONAL
EXPERIENCES

It was Monday January 7, 2019, my first day in my designated school,

Don Servillano Platon Memorial National High School. I woke up as early as 5
am since I have to prepare myself for this internship. I was feeling excited at
the same time nervous. I didn’t know how exactly what to portray when I was
in the school. As a student teacher, I needed to act like a professional teacher
my way in dealing with the students.

While entering Don Servillano Platon Memorial National High School, me

and my co-practicumer student gave courtesy and greeted all the personnel in
the school as a sign of respect. We stayed in Principals Office and waited for
our assigned cooperating teachers. Ma’am Imelda Albero, the school principal
entertained and oriented us about the rules and responsibilities of a student
teacher for us to be ready and capable to deal with different kinds of learner
and to apply all principles and strategies of teaching that we learned in our
campus.
While waiting for my cooperating teacher, I cannot help but to have a
deep thought on how I would become a good apprentice. Many questions were
on my mind. Was I really prepared to teach? I reflected on my three years of
preparation from my University and I thought It was enough. I gained a
repertoire of healthy knowledge, receptacles of good values and storehouse of
useful skills that I learned for almost a year.

It was 1:00 pm when Ma’am Albero introduced Ma’am Salinda Isabela

Tabinas and Mrs. Rio Frances Demesa as my cooperating teachers. At first, I
observed that they’re both nice and a very approachable person. I was blessed
to be their apprentice. Since I have two cooperating teachers, we talk first a lot
of things about their schedules, daily routines, lesson planning and dealing
with her students and the set-up of our schedules since I have two cooperating
teachers. So they decided to schedule alternately weekly my schedules for
them. That’s why I was first assigned my first week to Ma’am Salinda Tabinas.
While discussing to me my responsibilities, I told myself that it was the
beginning of a thousand steps that I needed to take to achieve my vision and
passion in teaching.

I always telling myself just to get relax and be calm., don’t be too excited
or too nervous but I can’t help to feel both excitement and nervousness
running to adrenaline. Knowing that practice teaching was not a game or an
easy task. I have to be responsible enough to eliminate laziness to my system, I
need to prepare a daily lesson plan and be creative on my methods, strategies
and instructional materials to capture the attention of my students. In this
way. My students will learn more in a meaningful way.

I was overwhelmed when students greeted and showed respect to me as

their student teacher. This encouraged me to perform better and do my best
during my stay in DSPMNHS.

Before I meet my students, I already prepared myself for the possibilities

of dealing with different types of learners. I limit myself to be attached to my
students. I used to be firm on giving them task.

Grade 7 (BPP Exploratory), 7(Mapeh) and Grade 9(Cookery) were the

students assigned to me. Ma’am Salinda requested me to observe her in her
class to prepare to teach next week. And Grade 8-Potentado, 8-Bandin, 8-
Velarde and 10(Cookery) were also my sections and students assigned to me by
Ma’am Rio Demesa.

We entered to her first class grade 9. Students were excitedly greeted her
with smile drawn from their faces. Before Ma’am Salinda started her lesson,
she gave me the floor to introduce myself to them. I greeted back and the
students stared at me with encouraging smiles. I introduced myself and give
my expectation from their class. I also set my rules to them and after
introducing myself the student gave me a sit at the back. Ma’am Sab continue
her lesson and I observed that the students were enjoying their cookery (tle)
class with my cooperating teacher. I was introduced by Ma’am Sab and also
Ma’am Rio to other sections and I felt proud that I worked with them.

I asked my cooperating teachers for the task for them me to accomplish

daily and they told me that as her apprentice I needed to come with prepared
daily lesson plan. I should have my class record and most importantly was I
needed to have mastery of subject matter and used variety of strategies to
different learners so that I could be a teacher someday.

After knowing the task given by Ma’am Sab and Ma’am Rio, I made time
management plan calendar. I always prepare my lesson plan and keep my
records on intact. I finished first my paper works before leaving the school so
that I could have my extra time for leisure and other household chores. I
prepared myself to encounter unexpected problems inside the classroom daily.
It cannot to have uninterested students for some reason or maybe it’s about
the classroom management. But being their teacher I remain committed to my
profession and I tried solving this problem.

Ma’am Sab assigned me to teach on the third day of my staying. I made

my lesson plan as early as the day before my first class in 9-Cookery. Since
this was my first day of teaching, I was decided to have an activity with my
students but I never thought that some of them did not participate in their
group works. But since I forgot to make a rubrics for their activity, my lesson
was still on flow and peacefully done. While I’m discussing in front of the class,
my cooperating teacher Ma’am Salinda was observing me at the back sit. Then
after my discussion, I realized that teaching is a crucial thing when there’s no
proper classroom management it would not be an effective source of
knowleged. Ma’am Salinda told me that I should not be worried and give up
because it was part of training to encounter such problems on classroom
routines. And it was challenged to me on how to deal with it. I learned from my
first day of teaching about the problems that I need to minimize and be a
classroom manager when having a group activity. After teaching 9-Cookery, I
internalized a new strategy to avoid problems I encountered during my first
class in 9-cookery. I applied what I have learned from my first class to my next
class in 7-BPP. Before starting our activity, I discussed to them our rules and
guidelines of the activity. I made sure that all students participated with their
group mates. I flash my rubrics of grading on the board so that students would
be reminded to behave and be active in class.

Then afterwards, I called any representative from the group to present

their work as I gave them time to finish their activity. It was a big relief on my
part that finally I finished my discussion successfully. Aside from that, I
learned from my student’s to be a good classroom manager. For every failure,
there’s a progress of improvement as we kept on pursuing to make things
perfect. Thanks to my cooperating teachers and to my students for making the
best in me.

WORKING WITH MY COOPERATING TEACHERS

Thanks to Ma’am Salinda and Ma’am Rio who served as my guide

throughout my whole internship at Don Servillano Platon Memorial National
High School, I wanted to learn more on how to develop my ability when it
comes to my profession. Ma’am Sab and Ma’am Rio never lose their passion in
correcting my apprehension and she never forgot to give feedback on the things
that I need to improve. They always gives suggestions and collaborative with
me about my lesson planning.

Working with my cooperating teachers was an unforgettable experience. They

was the one who gave color to my practice teaching. At the same point, they
was the first one

Who encouraged me to improve my own self and make my teaching

experiences meaningful. They molded me and shared me a lot of things about
teaching strategies and methods and most of all to be a responsible teacher.

MY FINAL DEMONSTRATION
DAY

Finally, after two months of training at Don Servillano Platon Memorial

National High School, my most awaited and special day came. March 4, 2019
was my schedule for the final demonstration teaching. I held my demo-teaching
at the room of grade-12 RPB. Instead of being nervous, I felt excitement jitters
on my bones. I was confident that I would make my demonstration successful
and it happened as I expected. With the encouragement and supports of my
students and cooperating teachers. I made my day more fun, I did my very best
to share my knowledge, to touch learner’s heart, to inspire and specially to
make them learn while enjoying my class.

I was so energetic that day. Without the help of my beloved cooperating

teachers, my final demonstration would not be successful. Before my final
demonstration came, my cooperating teachers checked my lesson plan and give
some feedback and suggestions advices to make it more meaningful. When the
day has come of my final demonstration, I came to school as early as 7 am to
prepare the tools and equipment’s needed for my final demonstration. And I
also talk to my students that I will handle during my demonstration and
remind them the things that they need to do in our activity.

My observers were Ma’am Hayna L. Atutubo our TLE Department Head,

my supportive cooperating teachers Ma’am Rio and Ma’am Salinda. I also
invited Ma’am Raquel Panizares (12 -TLE teacher). Since Ma’am Imelda Albero,
the school principal was not around that day, she didn’t observe our final
demonstration.

My lesson plan as I expected seemed on smooth sailing. I did creative

discovery approach with integration of science, and art subject. Recognizing
learner’s intelligence’s could be great factor to have a good variety of strategies
in teaching. My students were very attentive and they never failed me in
executing my daily routines. I observed my students were also energetic most
of them raised their hands to answer my questions until the abstract topic
revealed by the students themselves. Suddenly there was a question on my
mind while I was executing my lesson I saw my observers smiling face since the
beginning of my demonstration and it inspired to be more energetic in my
teaching with a big wonder why.
