Kinematics in One Dimension: Pre - Laboratory Assignment

This document is a pre-lab assignment for a physics lab on kinematics in one dimension. It contains 5 questions to help students prepare for experiments using a cart, track, and motion detector. The questions ask students to interpret velocity vs. time and position vs. time graphs, determine if an object has constant acceleration based on the graphs, calculate the total distance traveled using a given velocity graph, and derive an expression for gravitational acceleration on an inclined plane using information in a diagram.

Pre – laboratory Assignment

Due at the beginning of your lab class. Answer all questions. Only some will be graded, for a total of 10 points.

In experiments 1 and 2, you will use a cart, track, and motion detector like those illustrated in Figure
1 to explore the relationship between an object’s displacement, velocity, and acceleration under
different circumstances.
Consider the following questions relevant to
experiments 1 and 2.
Question 1. How can you tell from a velocity
vs. time graph that a moving object has Figure 1. Experimental setup for experiments 1
changed direction?

Question 2. Draw the velocity vs. time graphs for an
object whose motion produced the position vs. time
graphs shown to the right. Assume the object can
change velocity so quickly that it looks instantaneous
on the time shown.

Question 3. How can you tell from velocity and position vs. time graphs that an object has a constant
acceleration?

Question 5. In Experiment 2 see Figure 2 the cart rolls

up and down an inclined track at an angle 𝜃. It
experiences only a component of the gravitational
acceleration, 𝑔 . By looking this figure carefully, derive
the expression for 𝑔 in terms of the known or
measurable parameters 𝑔, ℎ, and 𝑑.
