If its

steady at 1500C and 450C, determine: i) heat flow across the
plane wall, ii) temperature gradient in the flow direction.
• A Cu rod of 2.5cm diameter and 15cm length which is
perfectly insulated at its surface has its ends maintained at
450C and 400C. If the k for Cu=300W/m K, determine the
rate of heat transfer.
• A hot plate 1m x 1.5m is maintained at 3000C. Air at 200C
blows over the plate. If the convective heat transfer
coefficient is 20W/m20C, calculate the rate of heat transfer.
• A wire 1.5mm in diameter and 150mm long is submerged in
water at atmospheric pressure. An electric current is passed
through the wire and is increased until the water boils at
1000C. Under the condition if convective heat transfer
coefficient is 4500W/m20C find how much electric power
must be supplied to the wire to maintain the wire surface at
1200C?
• A hot steel disk of diameter 50mm is at 2000C. Determine the
amount of heat radiated by its top surface when i) it is
assumed as black body, ii) its emissivity is 0.8.
• A solar flat plate collector top glass at 400C, having an area
of 2m2, is kept in an atmosphere at 300C. Determine the
amount of heat transfer by radiation from its surface. Take
ε=0.8
• A surface having an area of 1.5m2 and maintained at 3000C
exchanges heat by radiation with another surface at 400C. The
value of factor due to the geometric location and emissivity is
0.52. Determine: i) heat lost by radiation, ii) the value of
thermal resistance, and iii) the value of equivalent convection
coefficient.
• A carbon steel plate (thermal conductivity=45W/m0C)
600mm x 900mm x 25mm is maintained at 3100C. Air at
150C blows over the hot plate. If convection heat transfer
coefficient is 22W/m20C and 250W is lost from the plate
surface by radiation, calculate the inside plate temperature.
• A surface at 2500C exposed to the surroundings at 1100C
convects and radiates heat to the surroundings. The
convection coefficient and radiation factor are 75W/m20C and
unity respectively. If the heat is conducted to the surface
through a solid of conductivity 10W/m0C, what is the
temperature gradient at the surface in the solid?
• A solid cylinder rod of diameter 10mm and length 150mm is
insulated on its cylindrical surface. Determine the heat flow
rate through the rod if k=0.78W/m K. The temperatures of the
ends of the rod are 00C and 1000C respectively.
• Consider a slab of thickness L=0.25m. One surface is kept at
1000C and the other surface at 00C. Determine the net flux
across the slab if the slab is made from pure copper. Thermal
conductivity of copper may be taken as 387.6W/m K.
• A hollow cylinder 5cm I.D and 10cm O.D has an inner
surface temperature of 2000C and an outer surface
temperature of 1000C. Determine the temperature of the point
halfway between the inner and the outer surfaces. If the
thermal conductivity of the cylinder material of 70W/m K
determine the heat flow through the cylinder per linear meter.
• A hollow sphere 10cm I.D and 30cm O.D of a material
having thermal conductivity 50 W/m K is used as a container
for a liquid chemical mixture. Its inner and outer surface
temperatures are 3000C and 1000C respectively. Determine
the heat flow rate through the sphere. Also estimate the
temperature at a point a quarter of the way between the inner
and outer surfaces.
• 5kW of heat is conducted through a plate of thickness 25mm
having k=0.2W/m K. If the cross-sectional area of the plate is
1.25m2, determine the temperature difference across the plate.
If the highest temperature on one of its faces is 6000C, find
the temperature on the other face and also at the centre of the
plate.
• A hollow steel cylinder of inner diameter 25mm and outer
diameter 32mm having k=30W/m K is maintained at 600C
and 500C at its inner and outer surfaces respectively. If the
length of the cylinder is 0.75m, determine the rate of heat
transfer. Also find the conduction resistance.
