When working with hand and power tools, are there are basic safety rules that
should always be followed.

To use hand and power tools safely, you should:

Inspect the tool before each use.
Use the right tool for the job.
Operate the tool according to the manufacturers instructions.
Use proper guarding devices.
Use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Perform maintenance on tools regularly.

Now, lets learn how to StartSafe and StaySafe with each hand and power tools.

Hand Tools

Certain precautions must be taken and protection worn when working with hand tools.
These include:
1.Do not use wrenches if the jaws are sprung.
2.Do not use chisels or wedges if the heads have mushroomed.
3.Do not use tools with loose, cracked, splintered or taped handles.
4.Keep cutting tools sharp.
5.Use the proper tool for its intended job.
6.Use proper PPE, safety goggles and gloves.
7.Keep floor surface free of debris and tripping hazards.

Power Tools

Certain precautions must be taken and protection worn when working with power
tools. These include:
1.Disconnecting tools when they are not in use, before servicing and cleaning, and
when changing accessories.
2.Keeping employees not directly involved with the work away from the work area.
3.Securing your work with clamps or a vise, freeing both hands to operate the tool.
4.Not holding the switch button while carrying a plugged-in tool.
5.Keeping tools sharp and clean.
6.Considering what you wear - loose clothing and jewelry can get caught in moving
parts.
7.Removing damaged electrical tools and tagging them as "Do Not Use".
8.Not using power tools that are not fitted with guards and safety switches.
Electrical Cords

Certain precautions must be taken and protection worn when working with electrical
cords. These include
1.Not carrying portable tools by the cord.
2.Not using the electrical cord to hoist or lower tools.
3.Not yanking the cord or hose to disconnect the tool.
4.Keeping cords and hoses away from heat, sharp edges, and oil.

Electrical Power Tools

Certain precautions must be taken and when working with electrical power tools.
These include:
1.Disconnect tools when not in use.
2.Remove damaged tools and tag them "do not use".
3.Don't carry electric tools by the power cord.
4.Don't operate in wet locations.
5.Use a cord with a three-pronged plug and grounding pin.
6.Ensure cords are not a tripping hazard.

All of these precautions are good to know. Another tool that we need to examine is
the abrasive wheel.

When working with an abrasive wheel, you must remember that it can throw off flying
fragments, which is why guards are essential. A guard is used so that a minimal
amount of the wheel is exposed when in use.

The first step in safety around abrasive wheels is proper PPE. Always use eye
and/or face protection.

Also, to ensure that your wheel is in good working condition, inspect and test it
before mounting it or using it.

To inspect and test an abrasive wheel:

1.Closely examine the wheel for damage.
2.Perform a sound or ring test by tapping the wheel gently with a light, non-
metallic instrument to ensure that the wheel is free from cracks/defects. Do not
use a wheel that sounds cracked or dead since this is an indication the wheel might
break during use.
3.Cover the spindle end, nut and flange projections.
4.Maintain proper alignment with the wheel when it is in use.

Pneumatic tools are powered by compressed air which is passed through a hose. You
should apply the same safety precautions with the tool's air hose that you take
with an electrical cord. Pneumatic tools include:
Nailers
Staplers
Chippers
Drills
Sanders
Jackhammers

Liquid fuel tools present different safety issues than pneumatic tools
You are correct. We still must be concerned about tool safety. In addition we need
to concern ourselves with the volatility of the fuel

Fuel should only be stored in approved containers. Did you know that Ethanol, which
is now part of most gasolines, can break down resins and fillers in fiberglass
containers causing them to leak? Resins leached from fiberglass tanks can enter the
fuel system and cause damage to the engines of liquid fuel tools. The alcohol
(ethanol) also attracts water which can lead to corrosion in metal gas tanks,
causing them to leak.

You should also be very careful around liquid fuels. No open flames or electrical
sparks should be allowed where there is a potential of vapors from liquid fuels.
you should also be very careful when it comes to breathing fuel vapors. The area of
use should be well ventilated

Care must also be taken when fueling a liquid fuel tool. You should never fuel a
liquid fuel tool while it is running. If the tool has been running, you should let
it cool down before refueling. This lowers the risk of the liquid fuel bursting
into flames.

Many tools are hydraulically powered. Hydraulic power is power derived from liquid
under pressure. Most heavy equipment uses hydraulic power. We will focus here on
hydraulic jacks.

Hydraulic jacks are very powerful and can be used to lift very heavy objects. You
should always ensure that the jack is placed on a solid surface and will not shift
during operation.

You should select a jack that has the proper weight capacity for the job at hand.
If you are not sure of the weight capacity for the job, a jack with a higher
capacity is better than one with a lower capacity.

Jacks are also equipped with a stop limit which should never be exceeded. Do not
forget that jacks should be inspected and lubricated regularly.

Let's take a look at these different jacks:

First is a common bottle jack. These are used to lift everything from cars to
houses.
Next is a common car lift which can be seen at most automobile shops.

Powder-actuated tools are very dangerous, and any employees using these tools must
be licensed and trained to use them safely. Employees must be trained to avoid
firing into easily-penetrated materials. Powder actuated tools have the power of
guns and when misused can be very dangerous

You should limit the number of people in the work area to those directly involved
in the work when using a powder actuated tool. Also, do not forget proper PPE.
Eyes, ear and face protection are a must.

Proper powder selection is also required. Select powder that will do the work
without excessive force. Safety devices on powder actuated tools should be tested
each day.

Don't forget, you should avoid using powder actuated tools on easily penetrated
materials.
Guarding is very important when working with all tools. A guarding device is
designed to prevent contact between you and the dangerous parts of a tool while it
is operating.

Guards protect you and others from the point of operation, in-running nip points,
and rotating parts, as well as flying chips and sparks.

Tools with belts gears, shafts, pulleys, sprockets, spindles, flywheels, chains,
and other moving parts require guarding.

Let's look at the importance of guards.

When using an abrasive wheel the guard should be positioned so that the minimal
amount of the wheel is exposed. In addition the guard should be checked for proper
alignment.

The moving parts of power tools should be guarded. You should never remove a guard
when the tool is in use
Guards should be designed and installed to protect the operator and others from the
point of operation, nip points, rotating parts and/or flying chips and sparks.

What about guards on saws?

Guards on saws are used to prevent the user from coming in to contact with the
blade
