5 General Requirements for UK Power Networks’ CAD Drawings

5.1 ProjectWise

All engineering drawings produced by UK Power Networks shall be created and saved in an
appropriate location within the Bentley ProjectWise file storage system with their full title and
other attributes recorded in the ProjectWise database. The version control system within
ProjectWise shall be used to ensure that all preliminary and approved versions of the same
drawing are held in a single location identified by the drawing number and version and status
indications.

5.2 File Formats

The standard CAD software used within UK Power Networks is Bentley MicroStation
(currently version ‘V8 XM’).

Drawings generated externally and adopted by UK Power Networks shall be imported into
the appropriate folder within ProjectWise. Provided that the file has been saved in an
acceptable format, as described below, it can be opened with MicroStation V8 XM and the
title can be added directly to the ProjectWise database by typing “titleblock modify” into the
Key-in window and copying the drawing title into the Attributes tab of the dialogue box.

New drawings shall be created as MicroStation V8 (DGN) format files. A PDF rendition shall
be generated of approved standard drawings which are to be shared via the CDL etc.

If it is necessary to work with AutoCAD software the design shall be saved in a DWG file
format no newer than AutoCAD 2007 to facilitate future editing within MicroStation V8 XM.

5.3 Presentation and Layout of Drawings

 Drawings shall be formatted to suit an ‘A’ sized drawing frame.

 All drawings produced by and for UK Power Networks shall be in millimetre or metre
working units.
 Angle measurements shall be shown as whole degrees except where greater accuracy
is required.
 All civil or mechanical designs shall be drawn at 1:1 scale in the model space with a
scaled sheet view 1 to fit an appropriate ‘A’ size drawing frame for convenient printing.
 Schematic diagrams shall be drawn full size in the model space. Additional sheet views
of the drawing are only required where the drawing consists of two or more sheets.
 If uncommon abbreviations are used in a drawing then an explanatory key shall be
provided in the notes.
 Associated drawings shall be listed within the drawing frame.
 The recommended ‘A’ size for printing and associated scale(s) shall be quoted in the title
block.
 The need for specific plot files should be avoided if possible and line weights and styles
should be chosen to suit the standard Windows printer driver. However, Civil Standards
B&W iplot.plt or Civil Standards Colour iplot.plt plot files should be used to print current
civil standards as the drawings are specifically formatted to suit these plot files.
 Drawing names shall be agreed upon beforehand with UK Power Networks.

1
A MicroStation ‘Sheet View’ (AutoCAD ‘drawing layout’ or ‘paper space’) is another view on the same design
often with its own frame and title block.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) Drawing Procedures Document Number: EDS 00-0001
Version: 3.1
Date: 10/07/2012

 Drawings are to be formatted to suit printing in black and white except where colour is
needed to highlight or differentiate certain elements.

6 Externally Produced CAD Drawings

UK Power Networks, like many other utility and infrastructure companies, uses Bentley
MicroStation CAD software. Manufacturers, suppliers and subcontracted network asset
providers frequently rely upon Autodesk AutoCAD software to generate drawings. As UKPN
adopts new network assets it needs to collect and file the associated drawings for future
reference or modification within ProjectWise.

AutoCAD (DWG) file formats change every couple of years and the latest format is
unreadable with our current version of MicroStation (V8 XM). Fortunately MicroStation V8
XM can directly read, edit (with some limitations) or convert DWG files saved in formats up
to version 2007.

The terms and conditions of suppliers’ contracts shall therefore specify that UK Power
Networks will accept drawing files created either in MicroStation V8 (DGN) format or
AutoCAD 2007 (DWG) format. Converting drawings from DWG to DGN format can adversely
affect scales, dimension data, line styles and text formats, so files shall be saved in their
original format unless or until significant amendments are required.

The next version of MicroStation (V8i) is compatible with later AutoCAD formats, but at the
time of writing no date has been set for the software upgrade within UK Power Networks.

6.1 Importing Contractor’s Drawings into ProjectWise

6.1.1 Requirements of Contractors

The following list describes how site record drawings shall be presented by contractors to
UK Power Networks for integration into the ProjectWise drawing management system:

1. Contractors shall clearly mark ‘As Erected’ or ‘As Built’ drawings accordingly.

2. The colours of linestyles and text indicating ‘Proposed Arrangement’ must be changed
by the contractor to the current status of ‘As Built’.

3. ‘As Built’ DWG format drawings shall be accompanied by a PDF rendition at the same ‘A’
size as the original.

4. Any CDs provided must be checked before being sent to the Project Manager as the
final ‘As Built’ set.

5. All drawings provided on CDs will be ‘As Erected’ for that site so any drawings not
required for ProjectWise must not be copied to the CD.

6. ‘As Built’ drawings applicable to the Network Records Department, such as cable routes,
shall be provided separately in phases as the project is developed.

6.1.2 Actions by UKPN

When importing Contractors’ drawings into ProjectWise the following procedures shall be
followed:

1. Imported drawings shall be given a UKPN drawing number and ‘stamp’ (see Section
7.3).

2. The contractor’s drawing number shall be left on the drawing for reference.

3. New drawings for ProjectWise shall take into account any existing DGN, DWG, microfilm
or raster (TIF or CIT) drawings already in ProjectWise which may need to be updated
with a new version or superseded.

4. Checks are required to ensure that users of Bentley Redline and MicroStation can open
the drawings.

5. DWG to DGN file format conversion is not reliable and does not produce like for like
results, this process normally creates problems e.g. linestyle/text irregularities. DWG
drawings shall be left in their original format unless or until revisions are required.

6. Any current spreadsheet index system shall continue to be updated to take account of
the old legacy systems still in use.

7. Multi-sheet DWG drawings shall be listed accordingly in the associated index.

8. Any numbering system used shall not conflict with the legacy systems.

9. ‘As Erected’ status shall be confirmed with the contractor or contract manager if not
shown on the drawing.

7 UK Power Networks’ Drawing Frames and Title Blocks

The title block provides important information about the drawing while the frame defines the
boundary of the drawing.

7.1 Frame

All printed plans shall include a border.

The drawing border shall be 20mm from the edge of the page and the border line shall be a
continuous 1mm thick line. The drawing space shall be within the borders.

The drawing template ‘Civil Standards Template’ provides the UK Power Networks standard
frame for civil designs, while the ‘Protection Standard’ template provides the equivalent for
electrical schematics. These will be made available to download from UKPN Central
Document Library.

7.2 Title Block

The title block shall be positioned on the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet so that when
the plan is stored in a drawer or folded appropriately, the title and number are always visible.
The position of the title block shall only be changed in exceptional circumstances. A vertical
strip above the title block may be reserved for notes, revisions, etc.

The title block shall include:

 A descriptive title.
 The drawing number.
 The scale at a designated ‘A’ sheet size.
 The company logo and name.
 Creation and modification dates.
 Names or initials of designer, draughtsperson and approver.
 Site name or standard.
 Version number or letter.
 Approval state.

8.1 Training

Training is provided on site on an ad-hoc basis. Contact the appropriate administrator as

listed below for more information.

8.2 ProjectWise Administration

The Programme Delivery Team within each licensed network area shall appoint a
Projectwise Administrator to oversee the setup and day-to-day running of ProjectWise.
These posts are currently filled as follows:

 Nic Chown – SPN Capital Programme.

 Peter Bolton – EPN Capital Programme.Alvin Simon – LPN Capital Programme..

Each Capital Programme delivery team has its own datasource within ProjectWise. An
additional datasource exists where the Engineering Standards Team develops UKPN-wide
standard drawings. Engineering Standards currently administers the Standards datasource.

ProjectWise administrators are able to adjust individual user settings to permit or limit
particular actions as appropriate to the user’s role, such as the ability to create, delete, edit
or approve drawing files or folders.

8.3 Investment Delivery (Capital Programme)

Each Capital Programme team is responsible for the maintenance and administration of
their datasource within ProjectWise. Drawings shall be organised into a hierarchy that is
straightforward and intuitive to navigate as far as legacy naming and numbering systems will
allow.

It is the responsibility of Programme Delivery teams to ensure that all externally generated
‘As Built’ project drawings are saved to ProjectWise as soon as is practicable. It is important
that drawings or other related documents are not withheld from the ProjectWise system as
this risks them being permanently unavailable to the business.

Section 6.1 provides more information about importing drawings and EDP 08-601 explains
the drawing approval procedure.

8.4 Capital Programme and Asset Management

Any individual within the Capital Programme or Asset Management directorates who
commissions work on the network involving the creation or revision of CAD drawings of
transmission or distribution assets is similarly responsible for saving those drawings to
ProjectWise at the earliest opportunity.

8.5 Engineering Standards Team

Standard design drawings developed by UKPN Asset Management are also held on
ProjectWise, but in a datasource with limited access to ensure that unapproved designs are
not used for site construction or commissioning. Approved drawings are published on CDL
for designers to download.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) Drawing Procedures Document Number: EDS 00-0001
Version: 3.1
Date: 10/07/2012

It is the responsibility of Asset Management standard designers to ensure that any

preliminary drawing which they circulate for review and comment is clearly marked as ‘Draft’,
‘Preliminary’ or ‘Unapproved’.

8.6 Designers and All Other CAD Users

Original CAD files shall not be distributed outside the company and its contractors, as this
risks the loss of intellectual property to our competitors.

9 CAD Drawing Scales

9.1 Civil Drawings

A drawing’s scale is the ratio of the subject’s size on the drawing to its actual size on site.
Drawing scales shall be in accordance with BS EN ISO 5455:1995.

Table 1 shows the drawing scales that shall be used in the production of UK Power
Networks’ civil drawings and their associated dimension and text styles as they appear when
printed at A1 size.

Scale Dimension Style Text Style – Notes and Title

1:1 1st 1st

1:2 2nd 2nd
1:5 5th 5th
1:10 10th 10th
1:20 20th 20th
1:50 50th 50th
1:100 100th 100th
1:200 200th 200th
1:500 500th 500th

Table 1: Technical Drawing Scales

A drawing Scale 1:25 can be used in certain instances when layout space is an issue

9.2 Electrical Schematic Drawings

Schematic diagrams shall be drawn with the 1mm grid lock turned on and labelled N.T.S.
(not to scale). An appropriate A-size frame shall be selected to fit around the drawing or a
separate framed sheet view can be created as described in Section 5.3 into which the model
view shall be scaled to fit.

A schematic drawing can be rescaled at the time of printing to fit any size of paper, the only
limitation being its readability.

10 Lines
The appropriate use of different line styles, weights and colours helps to indentify individual
elements. Standardisation of line forms and weights makes drawings easier to read and is
important to establish a familiar hierarchy within the drawing, this intuitively leads the viewer
to the information they require.

10.1 Civil Drawings

10.1.3 Line Weights (MicroStation)

The recommended line weights are listed below. Line weights affect the widths of the lines
when plotted. It is recommended that the lines are displayed realistically on screen by having
the line weights display on. If plot files other than the civil standard plot files are used then
the line weights as shown in Figure 2 may print thicker or thinner than was originally
intended.

Solid lines shall be used throughout except:

 Lines of association – long dash.

 Optional extra connections – short dash.
 Outline of separate panel or switchgear – dash-dot.

MicroStation weight 1 shall be used generally; weights between 0 and 3 may be selected for
clarity or emphasis.

11 CAD Symbols
The use of standard symbols helps to make the drawing easier to understand.

11.1 Civil Symbols

BS 8541-2 Recommended 2D symbols of building elements for use in building information

modelling lists a useful selection of approved civil drawing symbols. Symbols from BS 8541-
2 shall be used where appropriate in new drawings.

Common civil symbols and their descriptors are shown below. These symbols are examples
from the civil standard cell library which is available on CDL.

Additional levels may need to be added to the supplied template file. The new levels shall be
placed in the appropriate category on the next available number in that series. New levels
shall be labelled in upper case to distinguish them from the existing levels.

13.3 Use of Levels within Standard Schematic Diagrams

Many of UK Power Networks’ standard and site-specific schematic diagrams were imported
from an assortment of suppliers who use a range of levels to help distinguish different
element types (lines, symbols, text, frame etc.).

The UK Power Networks seed file for standard electrical schematic diagrams (available from
the Engineering Standards Team upon request) is designed for all drawing elements to be
placed on a single level, normally level 1, with the frame and title block appearing as
referenced files.

14 Text Styles
14.1 Civil Standards

The text shall be consistent throughout the drawing and the printed text height on an A1 size
print shall be at least of 2.5mm. All text shall be in English. All text shall be in upper case.

There are two principle types of text:

 Title Text – Information that anyone using a drawing shall note as of primary
importance.
 Note Text – Less significant information but essential to understand the drawing.

The two standard fonts used are:

 Arial – For title text, title block and frame notes.

 Working – For all other notes.

The drawing template Civil Standards Template.DGN has the text styles set out in the
appropriate scale. These two fonts are to be used as they convert effectively between the
two drawing formats, DGN and DWG, when necessary.

14.2 Schematic Standards

The text shall be consistent throughout the drawing and shall be at least 2mm high when
printed full size. All text shall be in English.

The two standard fonts used are:

 Arial – For title text, title block and frame notes.

 Engineering (upper case) – For all other notes.

15 Dimensions (Civil)
The dimensions shall be a thin continuous line with terminating arrows on each end, thin
continuous extension lines and text adjacent to an arrow. The appropriate scale shall be
used in conjunction with the same text and note scale. An example of a dimension can be

seen in Figure 3. Dimensioning shall be to the nearest 5mm if possible except where greater
accuracy is essential to the construction or the installation of the plant.

Dimensions and levels shall be displayed as follows:

 Millimetre dimensions to 0 decimal places and to the nearest 5mm (if possible) e.g.
1325.
 Levels shown in metres to 3 decimal places. e.g. 1.400.

Dimensions shall be compliant as follows:

 Associative dimensioning shall be used at all times.

 Dimensional changes shall reflect changes to drawing.
 Dimension lines shall be simple, straight unbroken lines to the set dimension level.
 Dimension text shall be positioned above the dimension line and central of the dimension
if possible.
 All dimension units shall be in millimetres.
 Dimension arrows shall not cross content where practical.

If the open file is a DWG file, AutoCAD system variables and
their values are listed in the Element Information dialog in File
Browse mode. These variables are DWG-specific, and there is
no correspondence in the DGN format.
Configuration System If a DWG file is saved in DGN format, AutoCAD system variable
variables variables values will not be accessible even if they were inserted in fields.
Therefore, it is recommended that you not insert AutoCAD
system variable values in fields in a DWG file which may need to
be saved in DGN format.

17 Cell Libraries
Cell libraries are a feature of Bentley MicroStation which enable the pooling and distribution
of useful drawing elements as cells. Schematic symbols and electrical plant items are
commonly saved as cells for other CAD users to import as required. A well-stocked cell
library offers a significant boost to CAD drawing efficiency.

Popular examples are:

 Civil symbols – Civil Standards cell library.cel.

 Electrical symbols for civil drawings – Electrical standards cell library.cel.
 Schematic diagram symbol library – Schem.cel.
 Blank drawing sheets, title blocks and logos – Sheet.cel.

These and others are held and managed locally, but should be compared and shared on a
regular basis. All new equipment items or symbols drawn should be considered for adding
into the appropriate library if they are likely to be needed on other drawings. The civil cell
libraries are available to download from CDL.
