As of today’s generation, email has been a vital part of most people’s lives as it
provides efficient and effective ways to transmit all kinds of electronic data. Its incorporation
within the classroom can be useful to everybody. In fact, the use of email in the classroom
could prepare the students for the future. College students were mostly viable and uncover
with the practice of email, students usually need to make a good impression to their
professors in the classroom such as when presenting lesson ventures, homework
assignments completion, and exam performance “It only takes 4 seconds to make an
impression. Be remembered for your style of communication not your username.” Hence,
impressions are also being formed by professors when receiving an email message from a
student in their class.
The etiquette rules are different when apply in communicating online from those that
apply when communicating in person. Netiquette encourages students to have good writing
skills as for displaying excellent grammar and sentence structure, correct spelling,
appropriate word choice, and organization of email must be applied. It cannot be assumed
that students automatically know how to communicate in an online environment, netiquette
rules have emerged to facilitate online interactions in the absence of visual and auditory
cues, which can often be sources of misunderstandings, as readers can easily misinterpret
messages (Marx, 2004). Observing proper and correct netiquette when sending a message
to the instructor via e-mail is very important as it discourages inappropriate online conduct
and conflict. Upon sending a message via email to the instructor, the use of an appropriate
username must be applied for formality, this will help the instructors to easily identify and
acknowledge the sender of that particular mail including identifying oneself as a student to
the professor’s class. The use of a clear and descriptive subject line will be the way to give
them a reason to open the email. It was also important to start the email with a sense of
respect by giving greetings and acknowledgment to the instructors. The practice of
exercising polite and considerate behavior in online contexts, such as email will establish a
good and well-balanced relationship between the students and professors. The conclusion
must be ended with appreciation by saying thank you’s. Considerably, the message itself
must be specific, get to the point with a clear purpose of the email, and is presented in an
organized manner with the use of proper spacing and breaks in necessity. It must be
visually pleasing way for easy reading.
Compliance with netiquette lends respect, it can also help students improve communication
skills, develop soft skills, and enables students to have a better understanding of the
socially standard when working and collaborating online in different environments.
Significantly, observing proper netiquette can help promote professional standards of
behavior in the online environment, as expected in the traditional classroom
