Experiment Name: Objective: Theory:: Experiment On 120 Voltage Source Inverter Using PSIM

The document summarizes an experiment on a 1200 voltage source inverter using PSIM. The objective is to study the performance of a three-phase inverter using MOSFET switches with an R load. The circuit diagram shows a three-phase bridge inverter and firing sequence. The procedure involves drawing the circuit in PSIM, setting the frequency, measuring voltages and currents, and observing output voltage at different frequencies. Precautions include changing all gating block frequencies and checking instantaneous polarity when connecting meters. Instructions specify how to change the frequency and gating points in the blocks.

Experiment on 1200 voltage source inverter using PSIM

Experiment Name: Study of performance of three phase inverter using MOSFET as switch with R load
Objective: The objective of the experiment is to study a voltage source inverter in 120° mode of operation.

Theory: Variable frequency and variable voltage supply for induction motor control can be obtained either
from a voltage source inverter (VSI) or a cyclo-converter. Voltage source inverter allows a variable frequency
supply to be obtained from a dc supply.
Circuit diagram shows a three phase bridge inverter with waveforms for 120° conduction mode. The MOSFET
conduction conducts in sequence to be instantaneous. The feedback diode is to be used with inductive loads to
free the energy that is stored in the inductor.
Each MOSFET here conducts for 120°.During the staring the MOSFET T1 and T6 conduct. After 60° the
MOSFET T6 turn off and at that time MOSFET T2 start the conduction. At each and every moment two pair of
MOSFET will conduct the current into the induction motor where other are remains in turn off condition.

Circuit Diagram:
Procedure:
1. Draw the circuit diagram in PSIM as shown above.
2. Set the frequency to a specified value.
3. Measure the line to line voltage and line current from Simview.
4. Observe the output voltage for three different values of frequencies (such as 40Hz, 50Hz and 60Hz
respectively).

Observation table :
Line Voltage
Input Phase Voltage (Volt)
Vab (Volt) Load
Voltage Frequency Measured Calculated Measured Calculated

Vd.c (Hz) 𝑉𝑑𝑐 𝑉𝑎𝑏
Vab = Van V bn V cn (Amp)

R= 50
100V 10Ω 60

Precaution:
1. Remember to change the frequency of all gating blocks.
2. While connecting ammeter and voltmeter take care of the instantaneous polarity.
3. Always save (Ctrl-s) your work at every intermediate step.

Instruction:
To change the frequency just change it from the gating block; remember to change the frequencies of all the
six gating blocks otherwise you will get wrong result.
If you do not understand the gating sequence or the values of degree written on the circuit diagram you can
see the table above. It is clearly mentioned there.
Gating block numbers given on the circuit diagram is in accordance with the MOSFET numbers, like gating
block G1 is for MOSFET T1, gating block G2 is for MOSFET T2 etc.
For gating block G6 you have to choose four gating points 0 60 300 360, but for all other gating blocks gating
points are limited to two only.
Do not forget to choose the clock from simulation control.
