Lesson 1 - Selecting a Research Topic

Learning Objectives:

- I can formulate questions about a personal interest or a curricular topic.


- I can refine questions as information needs change.
*After Lesson 1, students will list five possible research topics of interest to them to explore. (Following further
exploration students will narrow their list down to their top 3 choices along with specific questions which they will use
to guide their research.)

Materials:

- Student iPads
- Interactive white board app
- Projector
- Laminated LMB Literacy topic task cards

Learning Activities:

I. Watch PowToon “What is research?” 0:00-1:20


II. Virtual White Board Activity #1: All students will have access to our virtual whiteboard via their iPad. When
they type on the virtual white board it will automatically appear on the screen projected on the wall.

IV. Virtual White Board Activity #2: All students will have access to our virtual whiteboard via their iPad. When
they type on the virtual white board it will automatically appear on the screen projected on the wall.

Subject: Reptiles, Pets, Large Cats, Horses, Dogs etc. – Brainstorm a research question

Brainstorm a specific research question and type it below.

What are some of the benefits of adopting dogs from an animal


shelter?

Which types of horses are best at barrel racing and


why?

How does a cheetah survive in its environment?

V. Each table group (3-4 students per group) will be given a different set of 4 laminated LMB Literacy research
topic task cards to review. Each card shows a research topic and 3 subtopics that could be used to help
guide their research.

VI. Students discuss the research topics and questions and as a group and rank the 4 topics in order from the
one they found to be the most to the least interesting.
VII. Each group will share their rankings with the class.
VIII. Conclusion: As you can see there are a wide variety of topics that could be covered in your research, it is
important to chose something that you find interesting! When are you brainstorming ideas ask yourself
these questions?
1. Is this something that will hold my interest?
2. Did I choose a topic that will have enough research available?
3. What types of questions will guide my research?
IX. Exit ticket: List five possible research topics of interest to you. You will explore these topics further
tomorrow and narrow them down to your top 3 choices with questions that you would use to guide your
research. You will then then submit your top 3 choices for approval to your classroom teacher.
