Properties of conductors support
➢LOW COST without compromising on efficiency
➢LONGER LIFE without the loss of network’s performance
➢ECONOMICAL TO MAINTAIN /LOW MAINTENACE COST
➢GROUND CLEARANCE
➢LIGHTER IN WEIGHT without the loss of mechanical strength
➢HIGH MECHANICAL STRENGTH to withstand the weight of conductors
and wind loads
➢EASY ACCESSIBLE of conductors for maintenance
Types of conductors support
The line supports used for transmission and distribution of electric power are of
various types including:
➢Wooden poles
➢Reinforced Concrete (RCC) Poles
➢Tubular Poles
➢Latticed Poles
➢Tower
Wooden poles:
Wooden Poles
Properties:
➢Wooden Poles are suitable for lines of moderate
cross-sectional area
➢Such supports are cheap, easily available, provide
insulating properties and therefore, are widely used
for distribution purposes in rural areas.
Wooden Poles
➢Double pole structures of
“A” , “H” and “T” type are often
used to obtain a transverse
strength
Wooden Poles

The main Objections to the wooden poles are:

➢Comparatively smaller life

➢Tendency to not below the ground level
➢Cant be used for voltages higher than 20kV
➢Less mechanical strength
➢Require periodical inspection
Reinforced Concrete Poles (RCC):
Reinforced Concrete Poles (RCC):
Properties:
➢They have greater mechanical strength, longer life and permit
longer span than the steel poles.
➢They give good outlook, require little maintenance and have good
insulting properties
➢Normally used for the 11 kV, 22kV and 33 kV transmission lines
Reinforced Concrete Poles (RCC):
Main Objections are:
➢The main difficulty with the use of these poles is the high cost of
transport owing to their heavy weights
➢Due to the more dead weight of RCC, it is less used in high-rise
support, as more load will be there on the foundation.
➢At end of life, concrete can be crushed and recycled but the recycled
material cannot be used for new building concrete. Therefore, the
scrap value of concrete is almost nil.
Steel Poles/ Steel Tubular Poles:
Properties:
➢They possess greater mechanical strength,
longer life and permit longer spans to be used.
➢Normally used for the distribution purposes in
the cities

Objection:
➢Needs to the galvanized or painted in
order to prolong its life
Steel Poles/ Steel Tubular Poles:
Latticed Poles/Steel Latticed Poles:
Latticed Poles/Steel Latticed Poles:
Properties:
➢Lattice tower requires only half as much material as a
freely standing tubular tower with a similar stiffness

➢Easily adjusted to accommodate several electric circuits

and various types of conductor configurations.

➢Normally used for the 33 KV transmission lines

Latticed Poles/Steel Latticed Poles:
The main Objection:

➢The basic objection on lattice towers is their

visual appearance, although that issue is clearly
debatable.
Transmission Line Towers / Steel Towers
➢In practice, wooden, steel or reinforced concrete pole are
generally used for distribution purposes at low voltage say up to
11 kV. However, for long distance transmission at higher voltages,
steel towers are used.
Properties:
They have greater mechanical strength, longer life, can withstand
most severe climatic changes and permit the use of longer spans.
Transmission Line Towers
Towers should be self-supporting and capable of resisting all forces
due to conductor loads, unbalanced conductors, wind and ice in
any direction.

➢Such towers often have approximately square bases and usually

four points of contact with the ground.
➢A semi-flexible tower is designed so that it can use overhead
grounding wires to transfer mechanical load to adjacent
structures, if a phase conductor breaks and the structure is
subject to unbalanced loads.
Transmission Line Towers
Jumpers:
Why are jumpers are provided in an overhead
transmission line?
The power conductor is connected to insulator on one side of
the tower and on the other side, another power conductor is
connected. But there is no electrical connection between these
two conductors. This electrical connection is served by a
conducting wire which is termed as jumper.
Jumpers In Wooden & Steel Tubular Poles
Jumpers:
Major Types of Transmission Line Towers
Tangent Tower are used at
points where transmission
line, suspension type
insulators are used.
Major Types of Transmission Line Towers

Deviation Towers are used at points

where transmission line changes
Direction.
➢Strain insulators are used with these
tower. They have broader base,
strong members and are expensive
as compared to tangent tower.
Line Supports

Miscellaneous Items- such as lightning arrestors and

climbing wires etc.

Foundation- System which transfers to the ground the

various dead and live loads of the tower and conductors
Line Supports

Note: the choice of supporting structure for a

particular case depends upon the line span,
cross sectional area, line voltage, cost and
local conditions
