Verification Example - Coped Beam: Geometry

This document summarizes a verification example of a coped beam to beam fin plate connection designed according to CSA S14-16. The connection uses M20 bolts and a 10mm thick plate made of various W series steel grades. The block shear resistance is checked for the connection using both the CISC manual calculation method and IDEA StatiCa software. The results show that IDEA StatiCa provides more conservative block shear resistance values than the CISC method, with the difference increasing with higher tensile and yield strengths. This is because IDEA only considers yield strength while CISC uses both yield and tensile strengths in its formula.

IDEA StatiCa Connection Verification example 1

Verification example – Coped beam

Type of connection: Beam to beam fin plate connection
Unit system: Metric
Designed acc. to: CSA S14-16
Investigated: Base material
Plate Materials: W series steel grade
Bolts: M20, grade A325, standard holes with diameter 22 mm

Geometry:

Bolts M20, A325

tf = 10 mm

tw = 6 mm

Applied forces:
N = 0 kN
V = -500 kN
M = 0 kNm

Procedure:
Block shear resistance is checked on a coped beam (thickness of the web 6 mm), which is designed to
fail while other components are still undamaged.

The results of IDEA StatiCa Connection design gives conservative values of block shear resistance
compared to manual computation according to CSA 16-14. This is caused mainly due to the use of
the tensile force, Fu, in the analytical formula. IDEA works only with the yield strength, Fy, and
therefore the results differ with increasing difference between the tensile strength and yield
strength. Also, due to the one-sided fin plate connection, the fin plate slightly bends and thus
decreases the resistance.
