Hardware description Properties

Properties
The basic unit is equipped with 24 (PMC 21) or 48 (PMC 22) digital inputs/outputs and
with optional interfaces. The system is modularly expandable.
Of especial interest are the programmable inputs/outputs witch can be used either as
inputs or outputs.
(Only 4 analog inputs are available with the option Z "fast counter". Analog inputs are
not available for the SELECONTROL® PMC 21 Mini.)
Of especial interest are the programmable inputs/outputs witch can be used either as
inputs or outputs.
Options: (Not available for PMC 21 Mini)
• 1 analog output
• Intel-BITBUS communication
• LC-display
• I/O-expansion
• 1 fast counter

System configuration
The system can be built up from various modules. These modules can be added at any
time until the maximum limit of four modules in addition to the basic unit is reached
(assuming that the "Expandable" option E has been ordered). The modules are
assembled onto a DIN mounting rail. Electrical connections to the inputs and outputs
are made by means of front-mounted, pluggable screw-terminals. Connections between
modules is made via cables running along the upper edge of the modules.

Communication
The basic unit can be equipped with the optional serial interface that can be used for
programming purposes and for communication with terminals, PC's, text-handling
systems, modems, etc.
The "BITBUS" option enables the system to be incorporated into the field-bus system
by Intel which makes communication possible with other Selectron controllers and with
other automation systems and host computers.

Option B; BITBUS-connection
This RS 485 interface provides a means of communication with other controllers or
with alien systems that work with the Intel-BITBUS-standard.
Selectron products can communicate with one another through simple read and write
commands without a large programming overhead.
Here, too, the system parameters can be set by DIP-switches on the rear panel of the
unit. The pin-out on the interface connector is shown in the following drawing:

Digital input/output modules Hardware description

Digital input/output modules

DIO 20, DIO 21, DOM 21
The input circuitry of the digital input/output modules shape the signals coming from
sensors, contacts, push-buttons, etc. into the digital signal levels required by the PLC
while the outputs are fed to actuators such as valves, circuit breakers, lamps, etc.
For this purpose, the PLC internal digital signal levels are converted to the necessary
digital output levels or to electrically isolated switching contacts.

Inputs
Input signals must be dc voltages; the upper and lower levels being evaluated in the
case of switching contacts.
Each module offers 16 (DIO 20) or 8 (DIO 21) digital inputs that are electrically
separated from the system bus by opto-isolators. The signal state at each input is
indicated by an individual green LED.

Outputs (electronic)
Each module has 8 (DIO 20) or 16 (DIO 21) digital outputs that are electrically
separated from the system bus by opto-isolators. The signal state at each output is
indicated by an individual green LED. The outputs are electronically protected against
short-circuits. A red LED on the module lights up if a short-circuit would occur.
Each output is provided with a reverse-biased diode to protect it when inductive loads
are used. In critical cases (such as with long signal lines), it is recommended to wire an
interference suppressor directly across the load.

Outputs (relay)
Each module (DOM 21) has 12 relays (8 normally open and 4 change-over). The signal
state at each output is indicated by an individual green LED.
The relay contacts are protected from voltage spikes by R-C networks.

System manual, page 3.32 11.08.93; 396.0432

Hardware description DIO 20, DIO 21, DOM 21

Connection
Connection of the individual I/O lines is made through a front-mounted. pluggable
screw terminal strip, making wiring easy and convenient.

Note: DIO 20 and DIO 21

In the event of a short-circuit, all the outputs of a module are switched
off and the short-circuit indicator (red LED) lights up.
The supply must be interrupted to put the module back into operation.

Warning: DOM 21
Local installation regulations must be respected when using these
modules (Permissible output voltage range 0 ... 250 Vac/Vdc).
The assembly and cabling must be carried out by qualified
personnel only if the voltage used exceeds the low voltage range
(i.e. > 60 Vac/Vdc).

Hardware description Analog input/output modules

Analog input/output modules

AIM 20, AIO 20, AOM 20
Analog signals presented at the module inputs are converted into the digital signals
needed by the PLC.
Input signals can be in the form of currents, voltages or originate from Pt 100
temperature sensors. The outputs provide analog signals in the form of positive or
negative voltages or currents that correspond to the PLC's internal digital signals.

Inputs
The digital resolution of an incoming analog signal is 12-bit, i.e. 4096 units represent
the nominal input rating. The two modules AIM 20 and AIO 20 both have 4 analog
inputs for which the measuring range can be set by means of DIP-switches. The ranges
of 0 ... 10V, 0 ... 20mA and Pt 100 temperature sensor are selectable. A 2mA current
source is incorporated for temperature measurements with Pt 100 elements.
Measurements are made differentially (i.e. the difference between two inputs).

Outputs
The AOM 20 and AIO 20 modules each have 4 outputs which can be set to the required
range by means of DIP-switches. The ranges 0 ... 10V, ±10V or 0 ... 20mA can be
selected with a resolution of 12-bit in each case (4096 units represent the nominal
output setting).

Connection technique
Connection of the various signal lines is effected via a pluggable screw terminal block
which enables pre-assembly of the wiring to be easily and effectively carried out.

Note: When starting up the module power feed the analog signals are not defined.
The analog signals of the R-registers are defined after the power supply is
>18Vdc and the initialisation time is >20ms (initialisation time runs after
the 18Vdc limit has been reached).

Simulator SIM 20 Hardware description

Simulator SIM 20
Signals at the 16 inputs of a module can be simulated by means of the Simulator SIM
20. The simulator is plugged directly into the module in place of the pluggable terminal
strip. The pluggable terminal strip can be plugged into the simulator. In this case, the
inputs (signal source / simulator switches) are connected in parallel. This mode of
operation is mostly used when individual signal sources have to be simulated during
commissioning of the system.
The outputs, too, can be simulated with the simulator. The maximum loading of the
outputs in such cases is 0.1A.

Program memories Hardware description

Program memories
ROM 21 (EPROM-cartridge)
ROM 22 (EEPROM-cartridge)
ROM 23 (EEPROM-cartridge with battery for internal RAM)

The execution of the program is carried out from the internal RAM (basic
configuration) which is buffered by a GOLD-CAP capacitor (see the table in section
3.10).
The ROM-cartridges serve as program backups. When the BACK-UP priority mode of
operation is implemented, the program is automatically copied from the cartridge to the
RAM after a power interruption and the program that is in the RAM is overwritten.
Process data (i.e. contents of the D-registers) are only stored and processed in the
internal RAM (use a ROM 23 if lengthy power interruptions are anticipated!).

The program in the internal RAM can be stored in the EEPROM-cartridge with the
command S)1234 or, conversely, by using the command R)1234, a program can be
restored to the internal RAM from an EPROM or EEPROM-cartridge.

Hardware description Program memories

ROM 21 (EPROM-cartridge)
An 8-kbyte EPROM memory module for storing programs containing up to 2500
control instructions. The EPROM is mounted in a header.
The following procedure should be adopted if program backup is required to be in
EPROM (instead of EEPROM):
1. SAVE the program to a ROM 22 (EEPROM-cartridge with pluggable EEPROM,
without buffer battery)
2. Remove the EEPROM from the ROM 22 cartridge
3. Copy the program into an EPROM with a conventional PROM-programmer
4. Insert the EPROM in the ROM 21 cartridge

ROM 22 (EEPROM-cartridge)
An 8-kbyte EEPROM memory module for storing programs containing up to 2500
control instructions. The EEPROM is mounted in a header. It serves as a program
backup and can be used as a master for making duplicates in EPROM.

ROM 23 (EEPROM-cartridge with battery)

An 8-kbyte EEPROM memory module for storing programs containing up to 2500
control instructions. The EEPROM is permanently fitted without a header.
The battery in the cartridge serves to buffer the internal RAM (for a warm-start). The
life of the battery is between 5 and 8 years. The ROM 23 is used as a program backup
and for RAM buffering.

addition, an integral real-time clock. The clock data can be interrogated by software so
that the user-program has access to the time-of-day (in hours, minutes and seconds) and
the date (as calendar-day, weekday, month and year). Alarm times can also be set.
