Introduction

Location and History:


Bahrain, a land with culture and modernity is the
smallest of all middle eastern countries. The area is an
archipelago of 33 islands and is located in the Persian
Gulf between Saudi Arabia and Qatar and is 124 miles
south of Iran. With its capital city being Manama, the
country is around 720 Km2 and has a 24 km causeway
connecting it to KSA (the Arabian Peninsula). Initially Bahrain was ruled by Persians and in
1783, the Al Khalifa invaded them and have been ruling ever since with a monarchy system
and the current ruler is Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. During the 19th century the Al Khalifa
signed many treaties with the Britain which put them under British Protectorate and aided
them in being the official ruling dynasty. They gained their full independence on 14 August
1971. Although the changing point of Bahrain occurred in 1932, when it was the first gulf
country that discovered oil. The country gained further developed with the Bahrain Petroleum
Company (BAPCO) which offered new employment opportunities and a chance for
expansion.

Overview:
The national language of Bahrain is Arabic, but English is also very common in business and
a mandatory second language in their education system. As per the worldometers in 2020 the
population is 1.7 million and 52.6% of them are expats. (Worldometer Bahrain) Their
population density is 2239 people per Km2. The currency used in the country is Bahraini
dinar which is equal to 2.65 USD, 9.74 AED and 194.34 INR. Bahrain’s GDP at the end of
2020 was 36 Billion USD and due to covid-
19 the GDP was -.7% down (from 38.57

This was due to the tanking of oil prices and
travel restrictions which impacted their
heavily invested tourism sector. Also, the
unemployment rate is .76% which is much
less than the natural rate of unemployment 4
to 6%. (Statista-bahrain)
Culture and Life Style:
Bahrain follows a very liberal approach and is
cosmopolitan with an Islamic heritage. There are
70% Shi'a Muslim and 30% Sunni Muslim . They
are also welcoming to expats and other religions as
the country has plenty of churches, temples, and
synagogues. Although there is no dress code, many
dress modestly and locals wear thobes or abayas.
The Arab culture can also be seen in their architecture, mosques, souks, public events and
cafes. The climate in Bahrain is moderate winters with long and heated summer; typically,
there is a tropical weather. Bahrain is also very safe, as currently it falls in the top 20 safest
countries range. Also, the education in public school is free and health insurance is
compulsory. (borgenproject.org) Bahrain has modernized the lifestyle and developed a lot in
the fields of oil, gas, petroleum, iron, fertilizer, and many more but Islam still lies at its core.
