Action Research Grade 10

This document outlines a proposed study on using online discussions to address problems encountered by Grade 10 students using modular learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. It introduces the topic, presents the research questions and objectives, and describes the methodology including research design, participants, data collection instrument (a questionnaire), and statistical analysis plan. The study aims to understand students' experiences with modular learning, identify challenges, and evaluate the benefits of online discussions in providing support.

TITLE OF ACTION ONLINE DISCUSSION: A Support System in Addressing Problems

RESEARCH Encountered by the Selected Grade 10 Students in Modular Mode of
Learning

I. INTRODUCTION Distance learning refers to a learning modality, where learning

takes place between the teacher and the learners who are
geographically remote from each other during instruction. This modality
has three types: Modular Distance Learning, Online Learning, and
TV/Radio-Based instruction. (Quinones, 2020).

Modular learning is the most popular type of Distance Learning

in the Philippines, this learning modality is currently used by both
public and private schools because according to a survey conducted
by the Department of Education (DepEd). Learning through printed and
digital modules emerged as the most preferred distance learning
method of parents with children who are enrolled this academic year
(Bernardo, J).

Learner’s problem in answering the modules rises as the

academic year started. Both the learners and parents are having
difficult time in answering the activities and exercises due to lack of
knowledge and expertise in different subject areas. Because of this
situation, the possibility of the learners of getting high scores lessen.
Having this kind of challenges, learners and parents are urge to use
different platforms such as messaging applications for them to consult
the assigned teachers in different subject areas.

The presence of a mentor to lend a helping hand no matter how

small or big the problem is, is sealed to them by the virtue of their
profession. Thus, scheduling of online discussion is deemed
necessary.

The aim of online discussion is to help students cope with

lessons, intensify learning and complete the needed task given in the
module or as simple as sharing to their teachers what bothers them.
This usually last for an hour depending on the degree to which they
need help and expertise of the teachers on the topic at hand.

The main purpose of this study is to design and develop an

online discussion for students to assist them in their academic
difficulties.

A. Research Research Questions:

Questions
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to:

a.) Age c. Section

b.) Sex

2. What are the problems encountered by the selected Grade 10

students in modular mode of learning?
3. What are the benefits of online discussion as a support system in
addressing problems of selected Grade 10 students in modular mode
of learning?

IV. SCOPE AND SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

LIMITATIONS
This study was conducted to determine the powerful tool in
addressing problems encountered by the identified Grade 9 students in
the new learning modality during this pandemic in Eastern Tayabas
College Inc. Through the use of questionnaire as a tool. The
researcher gathered information from students.

The researcher randomly selected 50 students in Grade 10 who

presently enrolled in S.Y. 2020-2021 to gather information in the new
learning modality during this pandemic.

This study will use descriptive method of research because it is

something more and beyond just data gathering the responses and
investigating the problem. According to VALDEZ (2012). Descriptive
Method is concerned with the description of data and characteristics
about a population. The goal is the acquisition of factual, accurate and
systematic data that can be used in average, frequencies and similar
statistical calculations. This research, however, aim to determine the
problems and benefits of online discussion as a support system in
addressing problems of selected Grade 10 students in modular mode
of learning.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at Eastern Tayabas College Inc. This

was founded by Dr. Vicente R. Vilar, an educator,Socio-economic
Leader and Business Executive born in Lopez, Quezon. It was way
back in 1920. After the Second World War, the institute began its
operation now name Eastern Tayabas College Inc. It is located at the
Fourth District of Quezon Province Municipality of Lopez, Quezon.

Research Instrument

The main type of research instrumentation which will be applied in

this research is a questionnaire which is prepared and formulated by
the researcher to gather the necessary data. It is the most efficient
device for gathering the greatest volume of information with
consistency. The questionnaire has three parts. The first part will be
demographic profile of the respondents, the second part will be the
encountered problems in modular learning and the last part is the
benefits of online discussion.

Data Gathering Procedure

The preliminary form of questionnaire will be constructed for

comments and suggestions by the action research adviser regarding
the format of item and content. The suggestions will serve as the
guidelines for revision of questionnaire. After this, the approval of the

intention letter containing the request to conduct a survey for the

students. The questionnaire will be distributed and retrieve. The data
gather will be recorded, ordered, analyzed and will be interpreted
accordingly.

Statistical Treatment of Data

In this study, the researcher will use different statistical measures to

treat the data. All data will be carefully read and examined for analysis.
They will be tallied and entered into a master list of the data collection
sheet. Percentage will be used to interpret the profile of the
respondents with the following formula:

f
P= x 100
n

Where: P= Percentage

f = frequency

n = Number of respondents

Weighted arithmetic mean used to identify the impact of parental

involvement to the academic performance. This formula cite from “
Statistics: Rudiments and Analysis of Data” Author by Carmelita U.
Cruz, ph.D. (2007). It has the following formula:

X=
∑ fw
n

Where: X = Weighted arithmetic mean

∑ fw = Number of responses
n = Number of respondents

The computed weighted arithmetic mean was qualitatively

described using the continuous scale as follow:

Continuum:

4.21----5.00 = (SA) Strongly Agree

3.41----4.20= ( A) Agree

2.61----3.40= ( U ) Uncertain

1.81----2.60= ( DA) Disagree

1.00----1.80= (SDA) Strongly Disagree

Table 1 above shows the distribution of the respondents in terms of age. It revealed
that most of the respondents are in the age bracket of 14-15 years old representing
60% of the total responses. Last, from age bracket of 18-19 years old representing
2% of the total responses.
