Assignment # 7: Statistics SE-2 Year DCS - University of Karachi Supervisor: Ms. Shaista Rais

This document contains two statistics assignment questions. The first question asks about testing Mendel's theory of inheritance ratios using sample data he obtained. The second question asks about analyzing survey data from 500 voters on their opinions of a governor's proposal based on their residence, to see if residence affects opinion. Both questions involve hypotheses testing at the 0.05 significance level.

Assignment # 7

Question1:

The Mendelian theory of inheritance claims that the frequencies of round and yellow, wrinkled and
yellow, round and green and wrinkled and green, peas will occur in the ratio 9:3:3:1 when two specific
varieties of peas are crossed. In testing this theory, Mendel obtained frequencies of 315, 101, 108 and
32 respectively. Do these sample data provide sufficient evidence to reject this theory at the 0.05 level
of significance?

Question 2:

Each person in a random sample of 500 registered voters (200 Urban, 200 Suburban and 100 rural
residents) was asked his or her opinion about the governer’s proposal legislation. Does the sample
evidence shown in the table below support the hypothesis that “voters within the different residence
groups have different opinion about the governer’s proposal?” Use alpha = 0.05.

Type of residence Favour Oppose Total

Urban 143 57 200
Suburban 98 102 200
Rural 13 87 100
Total 254 246 500
