Contextualization of History

Activity 1
1. What is history? How is your understanding of history different from what is explained in
this lesson?
History is the study of past events that happened in this world and my understanding of
history before the lesson is that history is a compilation of all the human events from the
pasts whether it is revolutionary change to the world or what our ancestors did to pass on
to the future.

2. What does a historian do? As a student of history, what do you think will be your
“duties”?
What a historian does is study history, they look for answers for the unknowns of the
world, they search for missing pieces of a mystery in the past and they collect and share
the information that they’ve gathered from their primary sources. As a student, my duties
are to share knowledge of what I’ve learned from history to people, and of course to only
share what is authentic/legit or with facts and to study history in my utmost ability.

3. What is the main distinction between primary source and secondary source?
primary source is a kind of source that is first hand and irreplaceable because of its
legibility came from the people of the past. While, secondary source is a kind of source
that is changeable and is able to be shared freely examples of this is photocopied,
paraphrased, etc.

4. Why is primary source important in the study of history?

primary source is important because it is irreplaceable, it’s the only firsthand proof that
the people from the past did exist and can make the people of the present time touch their
emotions because of its realness that they did left something for us and also it is the most
authentic proof that the source has absolute reliability.

Activity 2
Guide Question: On the basis of Ambeth Ocampo's definition of history, there are two
components involve and they are:
1. Kasaysayan/salaysay
2. Saysay
Question:  Write a brief history (Kasaysayan/narration of events) of Baliuag University and cite
examples on its meaningful existence (Saysay) as an educational institution. (write it with at least
100 words).
Baliuag University is first known as Baliuag Institute in 1925, and started with only 75 students.
But in 1941, the Baliuag Institute closed down because of the Japanese occupation. It reopened
two years later and went on to offer Junior Normal and Liberal Arts, both two-year courses, in
1946. In 1947, the government elevated the school’s status from Institute to Junior College.
Subsequent developments like campus improvements, new course offerings, and yearly growth
of student population paved the way to another milestone. Baliuag Junior College became
Baliuag Colleges in 1968. In 2001, Baliuag Colleges was declared a university and granted a
status of full autonomy by the Commission on Higher Education. As a result, it has become a
self-regulated institution with most of its course offerings granted with Level III Course
Accreditation Status.

The saysay of Baliuag University. It is a university for the people of Bulacan (or even outside of
Bulacan) to have education that can be suffice to the youth, to gain knowledge, to know their
own worth, to know their ambitions, to have their own goals and to be the best that they can be.
In my opinion, Baliuag University is a place for students to have an opportunity to take on the
courses that they want to take without going to top tier universities in the Philippines that even
though they can’t study for a more prestigious university because of the lack of money (or other
reasons), Baliuag University is a university that offers education for the Bulakenyos to go to
because its close and the money to be used will be inexpensive.
