Transportation
• Mobility is the basic need of human and fulfils all the basic need
of humanity.
• Transportation plays major role in the development of the human
civilization.
Transportation engineering is the planning, construction and
maintenance of transportation systems or facilities.
Objective of transport engineering
• Ensuring Safe, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and
environmentally compatible movement of people and goods.
• Developed a great communication system.
• Minimize losses of time and money from traffic jam.
Fundamental factors of transportation
The choice of method of transport depends on six fundamental factors
• Types of goods
• Distance involved
• Speed and security of transport
• Dimension
• Urgency of the order
• Cost involved
Traffic and Road Safety
Road traffic safety refers to methods and measures for reducing the risk
of a person using the road network for being killed or seriously injured.
The users of a road include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, their
passengers, and passengers of on-road public transport, mainly buses
and trams.
But due to ignorance of safety on the roads there are accident happening
on the road causing injuries and deaths.
• Road accident is most unwanted thing to happen to a road user. Main cause of
accidents and crashes are Over Speeding
• Drunken Driving
• Distractions to Driver
• Red Light Jumping
• Avoiding Safety Gears like Seat belts and Helmets
• Unawareness of road rules, regulation and signs.
Steps to be taken for preventing Road
Accidents
• 90 % of accidents can be avoided by strict enforcement of speed
limits.
• Existing speed limits should be brought down further.
• Heavy Penalty should be imposed on all those who cross speed limits.
If this is strictly implemented, nobody will dare to go at high speed.
• Helmet should be made compulsory by law in every state. Helmet
should be made compulsory for back seat riders also.
• Ensure that the money recovered as Road Tax is fully utilized for the
construction /maintenance of roads.
Various Modes of Transportation
• Road transport
• Railways
• Air transport
• Water transport
