13.2. A pig farmer wants to test three different diets designed to maximize weight gain. The
farmer randomly selects 12 pigs and divides them randomly into three groups, four pigs each.
Each group is given one of the diets. The weight gain, in kilograms, after a three-weeks period
are shown below.
Diet A Diet B Diet C
10.5 11.5 9.8
10.9 10.9 10.5
10.7 11.8 10.4
10.3 11.8 10.5
At @= 0.05, is there a significant difference in the mean weight gains of the pigs in each diet?
Ho: Diet A=Diet B=Diet C. There is no significant difference between the group.
H1: There is a significant difference between the group.
Descriptives - kilograms
groupings Mean SD N
a 10.600 0.258 4
b 11.500 0.424 4
c 10.300 0.337 4
Interpretation:
The data showed the mean of the diet A is 10.6 implies that average weight of the four pigs in
group A is 10.6 kilogram in three weeks. The mean of the group B showed highest mean among
the group which is 11.5 that implies that the four pigs gained an average weight of 11.5 kilogram
in three weeks. The mean of the group C showed lowest mean among the group which is 10.3
that implies that the four pigs gained an average weight of 10.3 kilogram in three weeks.
Ho: Diet A=Diet B=Diet C. There is no significant difference between the group.
H1: There is a significant difference between the group.
Interpretation:
The data showed the cases of grouping between and within the variance of the diet of three
groups. The degree of freedom between (groups A, B, C) is 2 and degree of freedom within
(group A, B, C) is 9, which implies in the F critical value of 5.71 which will be our standard
basis for data.
Decision Rule:
Accept the null hypothesis. There is no significant difference between the groups.
MANUAL COMPUTATIONS
Interpretation:
The data showed the mean of group A is 10.6, group B is 11.5 and group C is 10.3 which implies
that the group B got the highest average gained weight on the four pigs among 3 groups. In the
calculation the degree of freedom between is 2 and the degreeof freedom within is 9 which gives
the critical value of 5.71 that will be our standard value in comparing the given data. The grand
mean is 10.8 on the data given. Sum of square total is equal to 4.2 .
Interpretation:
The data showed that the sum of square within is 4.02 and the sum of between is 0.18
which is necessary to get the variance between which is 0.09 and variance within is 0.45. The F
value is 0.2 which is less than 5.71 (F critical).
It only implies that we accept the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference
between the groups.
