Quantitative Method Research Chapter 1 - Online Learning

This document discusses a study on the effect of online learning on communication between instructors and students at Quezon City University during the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to examine students' experiences with online classes, including positive factors like flexibility and negatives like delayed feedback. The study also seeks to understand how communication can be improved. It hypothesizes that while online learning provides benefits, it can negatively impact communication, motivation, and productivity due to issues like poor internet connections. The significance is that many students still prefer face-to-face classes due to problems with online learning.

CHAPTER I
Introduction

Communication between instructors and students has the ability to improve and
maximize the learning experience and to create a positive setup. The best and effective
communication is a process of exchanging thoughts, ideas, information and
knowledge in such a way to fulfill the intent in best possible way. The goal of online
communication is the same as the face-to-face learning communications.
Communication is the transfer of knowledge or information from one person to
another. When instructors communicate with students, they communicate for the
purpose of sharing their knowledge or having information to gain and to develop
their ideas and also communication and relationship. Communicating with students
is also an online environment requires more thoughts and planning than
communicating with students in the traditional environment which is face-to-face
because the online environment is a difficult progress between students and
instructors.

Background of the Study

How to ensure the quality of online learning in institutions of higher education

has been a growing g concern during the pandemic. This study utilized qualitative
methods to investigate the perceptions of students from Quezon City University
regarding the quality of online education based on their own online learning
experiences. Interviews and observations were conducted with students and
instructors. Positive and negative experiences of students were examined. The
findings of this research revealed that flexibility, cost-effectiveness, electronic research
availability, ease of connection to the Internet, and well-designed class interface were
students’ positive experiences. The students’ negative experiences were caused by
delayed feedback from instructors, unavailable technical support from instructors,
lack of self-regulation and self-motivation, the sense of isolation, monotonous
instructional methods, and poorly-designed course content. The findings can be used
by instructors to understand students’ perceptions regarding online learning, and
ultimately improve their online instructional practices.

Statement of the problem

This study entitled “The Effect of Online Learning on Communication between

Instructors and Students of Quezon City University during COVID-19 Pandemic.
Specifically, the researchers seek to find the answers on the following questions:
1.
What is the demographic profile of the respondents in
terms of:
1.1 Name
1.2 Age
1.3 Gender
2. What is the possible effect of Online Learning in terms of:
2.1 Academic Performance
2.2 Communication
3. Does online learning have a negative impact on communication between
instructors and students?
4. How communication between instructors and students in Quezon City
University can be improved?
5. What are the problems that students face in online learning and does online
learning have a negative effect on students’ participation and their
productivity level as a whole?

Hypotheses

This study is designed to assess the hypothesis that online learning has a
negative impact on communication between instructors and student are
somehow there are negatives because sometimes there is a poor internet
connection both students and instructors, there are also instances where the
online class does not help the mental health of students. Although it also has
a positive effect that is a big help to our learning just like what is happening
in our world Covid-19 that has affected the school attendance of young
people, the online class serves as our ladder to climb knowledge, to continue
and not stop our study. But on the other hand, students still prefer to have
face to face classes because many problems they face when taking online
classes, such as lack of motivation, understanding of the material, decrease in
communication levels between the students and their instructors and their
feeling of isolation caused by online classes.

Having effective communication of learning between instructor and students

especially in Quezon City University, Communication can be described as the
process where people exchange thoughts or ideas with one another. The
benefits of fostering such relationships enables students to freely discuss
thoughts and ideas, and creates an open environment in which questions can
be asked without the risk of being judged or humiliated. There will be
effective communication between the instructor and
students by creating a safe environment, because here confidence is built and
there is no fear of expressing one's thoughts. This is where the respect each
and every one inside and outside the classroom comes. Effective
Communication will accomplish the required effect and uphold the effect,
with the potential to make strides the message’s effect. In this manner,
effective communication serves the reason it was expecting or built for.
Conceivable goals may be to make change, to empower activity, to form
mindfulness, to teach or to communicate a few thoughts or perspective.

The internet is the first to help students and instructors and it also causes
problems for instructors and students. Because here in the Philippines the
internet connection is not fast and sometimes other networks shut down
suddenly. And not all instructors and students have their own WiFi, they just
rely on a data connection. In some ways online learning has a big help to us,
here in online learning, our knowledge increases with each course we take
day by day as we participate in online class, and the knowledge is not cut off,
somehow there is an increase, especially now that there is a pandemic and it
is forbidden to go out or have mass gatherings and enter schools.

Theoretical Framework

The effect of Covid19 is more than 98% of the world’s student population
have been affected by school closures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In
the study by done (Bedenlier et al., 2020; Chen & Jang, 2010; Chiu & Hew, 2018).
The urgent transition to online learning and teaching has posed challenges to
both school students and teachers. Many adolescents and young people
experience high levels of stress and anxiety arising from online learning.

Purpose of the Study

This study aims to see if online learning has an adverse effect on instructor
and student interactions, and if online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic
has an impact on student productivity. In addition, to study and recommend
strategies to improve effective communication between Quezon City University
instructors and students in online courses. Since many students and teachers are
new to online learning, there is a lot of interest in this
topic as they go through the change.

Significance of the Study

Students still prefer classroom classes over online classes due to many
problems they face when taking online classes, such as lack of motivation,
understanding of the material, decrease in communication levels between the
students and their instructors and their feeling of isolation caused by online
classes. (Alawamleh, Al-twait, Al-Saht 2020)

On facing pandemic with online classes gave a lot difficulties between the
communication of instructor and student which is mostly affecting the
interaction and message deliveries on classes. On having online classes, there are
some of challenges existed which is the result on this kind of set up, as some of
the students really got lazy in terms of taking it and that is also one of the
reasons why student does not keep a good attention to the class unable to give
good communication to their instruction.
