Instructions For Laboratory Report Writing: Mechanical Engineering Department Strength of Materials Lab (Me 325)

The document provides instructions for writing laboratory reports for a Strength of Materials lab course. It outlines the necessary sections of a report, which include: a title page with student and experiment details, objectives, introduction, theory, apparatus, procedure, results and discussion with tables and graphs, and conclusions. Students are advised to write reports in their own words, include relevant references, and use computers for typing, graphs, and analysis when possible. Reports demonstrate a student's understanding of the experiment and application of theoretical concepts to experimental data.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LAB (ME 325)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LABORATORY REPORT WRITING

The laboratory courses aim at introducing to a range of experimental methods that apply
the theories and formulas studied in the related theoretical courses. Furthermore, the
student is trained on working on apparatuses and hardware according to specific
procedures and disciplines, and asked to present the results and observations within a
technical report that includes the all necessary information, data and analysis for each
experiment.

REPORT WRITING
The report written about each experiment has considerable importance in the laboratory
courses because it shows how the student has understood the experiment and its
theoretical background and how he has implemented them to the resulted data. Of course,
a well-prepared report means better marks. The report should be consisted of the
following sections in the given order:

The Title Page

It should contain student's name and number, course name and code, experiment
title, group and instructor's name. Dates of experiment and submission should be written
too.

Objectives:
This is the summary of the targets of the experiment. It should be concise and
normally should be consisted of a single sentence or divided into few points that should
not exceed one line each.

Introduction:
This is to introduce the reader to the subject and to the experiment. The
introduction may state the value of the experiment, why it is done and summary of what is
done without giving results. It should be brief.

Theory:
In this section the theoretical background should be introduced with concentrating
on the equations and formulas related to the experiment. The equations should be shown
in the form that will be directly used in the section of "Results and Discussion". Long
derivations should be avoided. Each equation should be given a unique number.

Apparatus:
It is consist of description of the apparatus and specimens used in the experiment.
Line diagrams or clear pictures can be included in order to reduce the written content to a
minimum. Only essential features should be described. In line diagrams freehand sketches
are not accepted.

Procedure:
The steps of the experiment should be written in brief points. The sequence of the
test steps is very important, especially, how readings are taken.

Results and Discussion:

In this section, the readings taken during the experiment should be presented
according to the experiment type and objectives. The large numbers of readings should be
in a tabular form. If the readings are to be substituted in equations to obtain other
columns of data, only one reading record should be worked in Sample Calculations, while
the results of the remaining readings should be only recorded the table. It is better to
refer to the equations written in the section of "Theory" by using the given numbers.
Great interest should be given to the graphs, and the data points should be plotted very
precisely since in most experiments, important results are obtained graphically. The results
should be discussed with emphasizing on the accuracy of the data and sources of error.

Conclusions:
This section will normally only consist of one or two sentences summarizing the
results and the discussion.

If the student needs to refer to some references or include some additional

information to the report, optional sections of "References" and "Appendix" can be
appended to the report, respectively.

Some Advices:
1- Never consider the lab report as a full or an extracted copy of the experiment notes. It should
be your own work and written in your words. Cheated works will be rejected.
2- Enrich your reports by information from related references. They may be books, manuals, web
pages, etc.
3- Typing reports on computer, plotting graphs and performing analysis by using computer
programs, like MS Excel, are strongly recommended but not compulsory.
