A very old ship

by William James, age 12

Last Friday, I visited an old warship called

the Mary Rose with my class. The ship
sank to the bottom of the sea in 1545 and
stayed there for hundreds of years. When it
was found in 1982, it was put in a museum.
I’d wanted to see the Mary Rose for a long
time, so for me it was an exciting trip.

Before the trip, our teacher showed us a

video about the Mary Rose. I thought it was a fantastic story, and I read a
book my dad gave me about its history as well. Then, when we went on the
trip, we listened to audio guides, so I learnt even more about the ship.

I learnt how normal people lived in those times, for example, what they ate
and wore. I thought these things were interesting, but what I enjoyed
learning about most was the kind of games people played and what
musical instruments they had.

Quite often when ships are under the sea for hundreds of years, there’s
nothing left to see. But many things were found on the Mary Rose,
including wooden bowls and leather objects. The ship is small, but during a
war 700 men lived on board. It was amazing: I couldn’t believe there was
enough space for so many people.

After the trip, we put our drawings and stories about the Mary Rose on the
classroom wall. Some students didn’t enjoy the trip, but I thought it was
great. I’m planning to find out more about the 1500s, especially about how
ships were built.
