1 Derive the expression for shunt resistor (Rsh ) in terms of Rm and multiplying [1] CO1 R
factor (m) to extend the range of given PMMC ammeter.
2 A PMMC voltmeter is connected across the resistance R2 as shown in following [1] CO1 U
figure. What is the reading of voltmeter?

3 A PMMC instrument gives a full scale deflection of 5mA when the potential [1] CO1 Ap
difference across its terminals is 100mV. Calculate the series resistance for full
scale reading with 100V and also calculate the power dissipation.
4 An alternating current voltmeter with a maximum scale reading of 50V has [1] CO1 An
an inductance of 0.09H and a total resistance of 500Ω. The coil is wound
with copper wire having a resistance of 50Ω and the remainder of the
voltmeter circuit consists of a non-inductive resistance in series with the
coil. Find the capacitance that should be placed across the non-inductive
resistor to make the instrument read correctly both on a.c. as well as d.c.
5 A Moving Coil instrument with resistance 25Ω gives a full scale deflection with a [1] CO1 E
current of 1 mA. This instrument is to be used with a manganin shunt to extend its
range to 100 mA. Calculate the error caused by a 10 ̊C rise in temperature when:
(a) Copper moving coil is connected directly across the manganin shunt. (b) A 75Ω
manganin resistance is used in series with instrument moving coil. Justify the
result obtained in (a) and (b). Temperature coefficient of copper is 0.004/ ̊C and
manganin 0.00015/ ̊C
6 Classify the unknown resistances based on the DC bridges used to measure them. [1] CO2 R
7 A 220V, 10A 1-phase energy meter is tested at its marked ratings. The resistance of [1] CO2 U
pressure circuit is 8000 ohms and that of current circuit is 0.1 ohms. Calculate the
power consumed when testing the meter with phantom loading with current
circuit excited by a 5V battery.
8 A correctly adjusted, single phase, 230V induction watt-hour meter has a meter [1] CO2 Ap
constant of 800 revolutions per kWh. Determine the speed of the disc, for a current
of 5A at a power factor of 0.8 lagging. If the lag adjustment is altered so that the
phase angle between voltages coil flux and applied voltage is 86o. Calculate the
error introduced at (a) unity p.f. (b) 0.5 p.f. lagging.
9 The four arms of a Wheatstone bridge are as follows: AB=100Ω, BC=1000Ω, [1] CO2 An
CD=4000Ω and DA=400Ω. The galvanometer has a resistance of 100Ω, a
sensitivity of 100 mm/µA and is connected across arm AC. A source of 4V
DC is connected across the terminals BD. Calculate the current through the
galvanometer and its deflection if the resistance of arm DA is changed from
400Ω to 401 Ω.
10 A wattmeter has a current coil of 0.03 ohm resistance and pressure coil of [1] CO2 E
6000ohms resistance. If the load takes 20A at a voltage of 220V and 0.6 p.f
calculate the percentage error if the wattmeter is so connected that: (i) the current
coil is on the load side (ii) the pressure coil is on the load side. Justify which
wattmeter connection will have minimum error?

11 A Kelvin bridge is balanced with the following constants: outer ratio arm 100 CO2 Ap
Ω and 1000 Ω; inner arms ratio 99.92Ω and 1000.6Ω; resistance of link 0.1Ω;
standard resistance 0.00377Ω. Calculate the value of unknown resistance.
12 A high resistance of 200 MΩ has a leakage resistance of 400 MΩ between each CO2 Ap
of its main terminals and guard terminal. Find the percentage error in
measurement if the above resistance is measured by an ordinary Wheatstone
bridge without providing guard circuit
13 A supply of 450Hz is given between terminal a and c and the detector is CO2 Ap
connected between b and d. At balance: R2=4.8Ω, R3=2000Ω, R4=2850Ω
andC2=0.5µF and r2=0.4Ω. Calculate the value of C1 and r1 and the dissipating
factor.
14 Define Quality factor of a coil? Why is Hay’s bridge suited for measurement CO2 U
of inductance of high Q coils?
15 A bridge consists of the following: CO2 An
Arm ab - a choke coil having a resistance R1 and inductance L1
Arm bc - a non-inductive resistance R3
Arm cd - a mica condenser C4 in series with a non-inductive resistance R4
Arm da - non-inductive resistance R2. When this bridge is fed from a source of
500 Hz, balance is obtained under following conditions.R2=2410Ω; R3=750Ω;
C4=0.35 µF ; R4 = 64.5Ω. The series resistance of capacitor is 0.4Ω. Calculate the
resistance and inductance of the choke coil. The supply is connected between
a and c and the detector is between b and d.
