As long as public schools offer public education and the students who get through such a

system turn out to be outstanding citizens, the public education system is doing great work.

Nevertheless, there exist underlying issues in public education that have to be addressed.

According to Alvarez et al. (2018), '…the voice of public educators is needed now more than

ever and their unions are providing the megaphone'. There is a need for public educators to be

had due to the challenges faced by American public education. This begs the question: What

needs to be done to reform public education in the United States? Lynch (2017) believes that the

U.S. education system is failing because of reasons such as 'schools are overcrowded, lack of

education innovation, and school-to-prison pipeline.' It issues such as these call for a reformation

of the American public education system.

Further, American education requires reform since it does not have enough funding,

public schools have more mass shooting incidences than their private counterparts, educators feel

pressured and stressed (Alvarez et al., 2018). The public education system also has chronic

absenteeism, lack of education equity, cheating due to technology, and a tussle for the

achievement gap (Lynch, 2017). Nevertheless, some of the proposals put forward for reforming

education have faced opposition.

According to Young (2018), 'definitive statistical proof is provided that refutes the theory

that setting higher, more rigorous, standards increase student achievement.' The author claims his

stand because of several education reforms since the 1930s that have not revitalized the

education system. Despite the failure of some reforms, the public education system should not be

left as it is, but reforming it calls for all stakeholders' efforts, such as parents, teachers, students,

and legislators.
