Instruction. Read the quote from the famous John Dewey then answer the following questions:
“When a school introduces and trains each child of society into membership within such a little
community, saturating him with the spirit of service, and providing him with the instruments of
effective self-direction, we shall have the deepest and best guaranty of a larger society which is
worthy, lovely and harmonious.”

The function of schools according to John Dewey’s statement is that schools are training grounds
to develop students into membership of their society. He urges education to go through a
complete and radical transformation to give meaning for life. Schools are the seeds of the
society. It should reflect the life of the larger society. Schools are sites for citizenship ad civic
life.
Horace Mann creates schools, when he became Secretary of Education in Massachusetts in 1837,
he set forth his vision for a system of professional teachers who would teach students an
organized curriculum of basic content.
Let’s Analyze
Question: Why do we have to bother with the educational goals of the past which is past and so
we can no longer undo?
When it comes to educational goals, I don’t think we should forget the past about it. We
wouldn’t be here if without those contributions of great people in education. We should know
our past, for us to be able to understand the process of education and how it evolved up to the
present. In this way, the present not only becomes clear but also helps us illuminate the future.
