Question 1 (5 points): Read the following text.

Denmark Loves bicycles
Denmark is one of the most bicycle-friendly countries in the world. Roughly 40 percent of the
people in its capital, Copenhagen, commute to school or work by bicycle.
Why are bikes so popular in Denmark? First of all, the government is worried about pollution. Cars
pollute the air and the number of cars is growing. Denmark has a very high tax on cars because the
government wants more people to ride bikes instead.
Another reason for the popularity of bicycles is that Denmark is a very flat country. The highest
place in the country is only 557 feet (170m), so it is a very easy place to ride a bike. In Copenhagen,
there are also special lanes just for cyclists. Cars must stop when a bike is crossing the road. Some
places have special traffic lights to tell drivers that bikes are going to cross the road.
About 20 percent of people in nearby towns commute to Copenhagen on their bikes. But Denmark
wants to double this number. The government is planning to build bicycle “superhighways”. These
roads will only be for cyclists. Cyclists will have special places on these highways to stop and rest or
put air in their tires.
Denmark is also making traffic lights friendlier for cyclists. Most people ride their bike at about 10
mph (16 km/h). On the bicycle superhighways, people going this speed will only see green traffic lights.
They won't have to stop for a red light.
With these bicycle superhighways, Copenhagen may become the most bicycle-friendly city in the
world. Many other cities such as New York, London, and Guangzhou, China are thinking about copying
is plans. In fact, there is a new word or making a city more bicycle-friendly: “Copenhagenization.”
1. Summarize the text using your own words (80 -100 words).
There are 40 percent of citizen transport by bikes in Copenhagen, Denmark – one of the top bike-
friendly countries globally. The landform and the environment of Denmark are two main reasons.
Firstly, riding bikes is easier thanks to the Denmark plane surface. Secondly, as the escalating
proportion of cars enlarges the emissions, a high tax is posed on cars to encourage people to use bikes to
reduce pollution. Cyclist-beneficial policies also published in Copenhagen. To rise the bike-using

people from neighbor places to the capital, the authorities are planning to build “superhighways”.
Copenhagen could be most bicycle-friendly metropolis with this idea, which can be applied in other
large cities in the world.
2. What do you think about bicycle-friendly countries like Denmark? Do you think it’s important
for more countries to become bicycle-friendly? Why or why not?
It is obviously that the Earth is getting polluted due to the carelessness of the human being. In some
industrial countries which located numerous factories, the situation is much worse. The idea of a
bicycle-friendly place as Denmark is one solution for the environment. Personally, I totally support this
model to be develop. As far as I know, several nations in the Europe are now encouraging their people
to ride bikes. Similar to Denmark, the main reason for this action is to reduce pollution. Another
advantage is for physical fitness. Addition to the above usefulness, I reckon there is one more important
aspect. Because of the spread out of COVID-19, bike is one transport that helps prevent community
transmission. The first year of the pandemic, we could stay at home, freeze our actions, but the
development of more variant all over the world shows that the fight against coronavirus will not end
soon, and we should have other methods to adapt to this new situation.

3. What should you do to support a bicycle-friendly country?

As a Vietnamese student, I believe that my idea will be suitable for my own country.
- As the influences of social media is growing, it is important to have some campaigns launched on
several websites, pages to emphasize the benefits of riding bikes.
- I will take part in some events related to those campaigns to help deliver the massages to more people.
- A bike-friendly clubs should be organized within universities.

Write a reply to Greg, answering his questions.

You should write 150 -200 words. You need to include your name.
Dear Greg,
Hope you and your family are safe and well.
I am very fascinated to receive your email and I promise to be your tour guide when you are in
Vietnam.
Regarding your concern about traffic in Vietnam. There are several ways to travel from your hotel to
other locations. Firstly, the cheapest option is taking buses. It will cost you maximum 8,000 VND
each bus trip, but then you will have to find another bus, call for a taxi or walk a little more to reach
your specific destination. I recommend you to use Google Map for the best instruction. The second
transport is technology taxi service, which you can use by downloading several apps as following:
Grab, Be – Vietnamese ride-hailing, Gojek. As technology taxi service is popular in your country, I
reckon it is easy for you to use this. Finally, I believe that you will surely travel on foot. As a
traveler, this option will provide you the best experiences. Because traffic-jam is called as one
speciality in Vietnam, I hope you will be careful whenever you go across the road, and do not forget
to notice the traffic lights order.
As you have one month in Vietnam, I will accompany you in a S-line tour from the North to the
South of Vietnam. Let’s us start in Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam for you to get used to the
atmosphere and adapt to the time-zone. After one week, I will take you to my hometown Lang Son –
a mountainous city. You will have a chance to meet my family and try our food, go trekking,
swimming in the small spring near my grandparents’ house before moving to Hue - the former
imperial capital of Vietnam, which was not only the political but also the cultural and religious
centre of my country years ago. You should spend your last week in Vietnam to visit Ho Chi Minh
City, which was named after our great president. I am confident that you will have the wonderful
time in Vietnam.
Finally, I am very pleased to pick you up in the airport. Please forward me your air tickets, I will be
the one to hold a board with your name on it to welcome you when you arrive.
I am looking forward to your email and your trip.
Best wishes,
Nga Thu
