1. Ali and Ahmad underwent an oral glucose tolerance test. Both of them are 40 years of age.
BMI of Ali is 23 and that of Ahmad is 35.
Using the table below, draw a graph of glucose concentration against the time of blood
collection. Identify the diabetic person. Explain the relationship between BMI and blood glucose
level.
Ali’s BMI is ideal meanwhile Ahmad’s BMI is overweight. Based on the graph of blood glucose
against time, Ahmad is more likely to be diabetic because his fasting plasma glucose level is
7.2 mmol/L (≥7.0 mmol/L) and his 2h plasma glucose level is 10 (nearly to 11.1 mmol/L)
The higher the BMI of a person, the higher the blood glucose concentration would be. This is
because obesity causes increased levels of fatty acids and inflammation which lead to insulin
resistance, this in turn can lead to type 2 diabetes.
2. Using the table below, draw a graph of insulin level against the time of blood collection. Identify
Ali and Ahmad from the graph.
