Assignment On Bolted, Riveted and Welded Joint

This document contains a 12-problem assignment on bolted, riveted, and welded joints for a Machine Design I course. The assignment covers determining sizes of bolts, rivets, and welds based on given load and stress information. Problems involve selecting bolt/rivet diameters, and weld sizes to withstand tensile, shear, and other stresses based on specified safety factors and material properties. The assignment was prepared by Professor Tushar Kavatkar and aims to help students design machine elements based on static loading and strength principles.

Assignment on Bolted, Riveted and Welded Joint

 Applicable Course Outcomes:

1. Design Machine elements for static loading
2. Design Machine elements on the basis of strength
3. Use Design data books in designing various components

1. The following data is given for the bracket illustrated in the figure. Determine the
size of the bolts. Select the appropriate material.
P = 25 kN, e = 100 mm, l1 = 150 mm, l2 = 25 mm

2. A Bracket for supporting the travelling crane is shown in figure. The bracket is fixed
to the the steel column by means of four identical bolts, two at A and two at B. The
maximum load that comes on the bracket is 5 kN acting vertically downward at a
distance of 250 mm from the face of the column. The bolts are made of steel 40C8(Syt
=380 N/mm2) and factor of safety is 5. Determine the major diameter of bolts on the
basis of maximum principal stress. Assume (dc= 0.8d)

3. A cast iron bracket, as shown in Fig. supports a load of 10 kN. It is fixed to the
horizontal channel by means of four identical bolts, two at A and two at B. The bolts
are made of steel 30 C8 (Syt =400 N/mm2and the factor of safety is 6. Determine the
major diameter of the bolts if (dc= 0.8 d)

4. A steel plate subjected to a force of 5 kN and fixed to a channel by means of three

identical bolts is shown in figure. The bolts are made of plain carbon steel 30C8 (Syt
=400 N/mm2) and factor of safety is 3. Determine diameter of shank.

5. A cast iron bracket fixed to the steel structure is shown in figure. It supports the load of 25
kN. There are 2 bolts at A and 2 bolts at B. l1 = 50 mm, l2 = 200mm, l3 = 400 mm. Determine
the size of the bolts if permissible tensile stress in the bolts is 50 Mpa.

6. A bracket is supported by 4 rivets of equal diameter as shown to support a load of 12 kN.
Determine the size rivets taking permissible stresses as 60 Mpa.

7. A bracket is attached to a horizontal column by means of three identical rivets as

shown in Fig. The maximum permissible shear stress for the rivets is 60 N/mm2.
a) which rivet is subjected to maximum shear force.?
b) What is the magnitude of maximum force?
Determine the diameter of rivet.

8.A beam of rectangular cross section is welded to a support by means of fillet welds
as shown in fig. Determine the size of the welds, if the permissible shear stress in the
weld is limited to 100 N/mm2.

9.A solid Circular shaft of 30 mm diameter is welded to a vertical plate by fillet all
around. It carries a vertical load of 10 kN at a distance of 100 mm from the plate.
Determine the size if permissible shear stress for the weld is 90 N/mm2

10.A 50 mm diameter solid shaft is welded to a flat plate as shown in fig. If the size of
the weld is 15 mm. find the maximum normal & shear stress in the weld.

11.A bracket is supported by four rivet of equal diameter as shown in figure to support
a load of 50 kN. Determine the size of the rivet taking the permissible shear stress as
80 MPa.

12.A steel plate subjected to a force of 10 kN & fixed to another plate by means of
three identical bolts is shown in figure. The bolts are made from C-40 material. Factor
of safety is 3. Specify the size of the bolts.
