INTERNATIONAL CONVERGENCE OF TASTE
QUESTIONS:

1. What are the condition(s) of international convergence to taste? Discuss your

answer.

As the world becomes rapidly interconnected through convergence, also known as

globalization, the countries became more developed and experienced an improved standard of
living. Based on the article given, I determined the following conditions of the current
international convergence of taste:

 The goods and services around the world became widely available to each state through
exchanging products with other countries. This is because companies learned how to
adapt with the demands of the entire world and they knew how to consider these
preferences and styles as basis of their production. Through convergence, they
determined what are the needs of the different countries with accordance to their cultures.
For that reason, it made a way for them to create commodities that can suit the style of
the different communities and can lead to attract more customers.

 Globalization made it easier for us to have a connection with the different parts of the
globe through the enhanced telecommunications and this made a way for the companies
to gather information about the choices of the majority. It also used as a means for the
nations to easily introduce their brands with other countries and promote new
merchandises through telemarketing and online advertising.

 The countries started to compete with other nations in terms of the quality and prices of
the products they are making in order to win the competition that is taking place in the
international market. The consumers have attained a lot of options because of the offered
products from international brands.

 We, as consumers, became dependent with what is currently trending style worldwide
and it allows us to conform with other nation’s culture. In the present generation, we can
observe that the style of clothing, foods and even languages in our country is mostly
influenced by other foreign countries. I can say that one example of this is the grill trend
or the “samgyupsal” which was originated from Korea and is currently a trend in our
country. This is an effect of the international convergence of taste that is presently taking
place in our country and is also experienced in the different parts of the world.

2. How does this convergence promote consumer welfare?

Globalization made it easier for the countries to be more connected than ever and this is
not just the main advantage of this development. It also made a way for the market or the
consumers to be aware and stimulate their welfare through a lot of ways.

 One example of this is the promotion of consumer rights. Through the international
convergence of taste, the customers are given benefits and they are being aware of their
privileges whenever they buy a certain product. There were many established consumer
protection agencies around the world which includes the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD), United Nations Conference on Trade and
Development (UNCTAD), APEC Electronic Commerce Steering Group (AECSG),
European Consumer Centre Network (ECC-Net) etc. These agencies work together to
protect the merging industries and promotes the social well-being of every consumers
across the different parts of the world.

 Another aid of this convergence for the consumers is having a wide range of alternative
choices with the products that they want to buy. This convergence made it possible for
consumers to have many choices from the varieties of style being offered by the different
countries around the world, thus, it gives us many options to choose from. The
development brought by this convergence has undeniably helped a lot of consumers to
have a more convenient life than ever before. This also made a way for the consumers to
appreciate the culture of other countries as well as individual differences because of the
chance to taste other nation’s products.
