1 ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
1.1 General description of the study area
The study area is found in Hidabo-Abote district, North Showa zone of the Oromia regional state which is
10km far from Ejere town and 34km, 159km far from the Zonal capital Fiche and the metropolis Addis
Ababa respectively. The project area has a geographical location of 36p X-04 45 907m and Y-10 90 896m
and Z-2387m.a.s.l.
1.2 Objective
❖ To know the Geology ,Engineering geology and Hydro-geologic characteristic of the Catchment
❖ To identify water quality problems (if there is)
❖ To know the foundation material and recommend its depth by doing test pit along the axis of the
head work site
❖ To describe the lateral and vertical rock and soil stability of the river bank including their
engineering behavior
❖ To identify the geology along the main canal rout and recommend majors that should be taken
❖ To investigate and recommend the location of natural construction material (Rock for masonry ,
Coarse aggregate, Sand ,Clay for lining and fill and also Water) both in quality and quantity
1.3 Methodology
In this Geotechnical investigation two phases of study has been carried out:-
❖ Data collection and analysis in the office (desk study or preliminary study), and
❖ Field investigation and subsequent analysis of the collected data.
1
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report
❖ Geology and engineering geological mapping of materials have been conducted along the
main left and right bank irrigation cannels and command area.
❖ Assessment of the Geomorphologic features having importance in the movement and
localization of surface water
1.4 Topography and drainage
1.4.1 Topography
The elevation of the area ranges from 2250m-3000m which has undulating topography and in some places
especially in the low land of the area the topography is plain. The figure below show the altitude of the area
1.4.2 Drainage
Most the streams in this area are perennial and some are seasonal but all of them drain into Abay River
having dendritic drainage pattern.
of rock found in the area are Sandstone, Sandy Lst, Gypsum and alternating shale and limestone and some
tertiary volcanic rocks that formed the northern Ethiopian plateau.
LEGEND
Amba-ardam formation
Sandstone, conglomerate and shale
Antalo-formation Limestone
At the head work site the rock exposed on the surface is scoracious basalt which is massive and not easy
to dig it with auger bit or any other digging material but it is in favour of our the masonry work, so based
on the above condition the expected foundation material is scoracious basalt and it depth doesn’t exceed
0.5 m
❖ From 0m-201m along the main canal the canal should be lined due to the nature of the river bank
(Points taken for observation 1) location x=04 45 885m y=10 90 971m z=2386m and 2) x=0445
841 10 91 059m z=2383m)
❖ In between 201m-821m the test pit shows
0.1m
From this result the nature of the soil is clayey so the canal can be earthen canal. An outcrop of highly
weathered basaltic rock has been observed in b/n the distance 1.8km-1.81km along the main canal for about
100ms which forces us to lien our canal location x = 04 45 402 y = 10 92 688m z = 2330m.a.s.l.
1.6.2 Sand
There are two options to find good quality sand for both concrete work and also for plastering purpose
This area is found near to Ejere town at an average distance of 3km in the Keble called Sire morose,
having a geographic location of X=04 46 614m Y 10 93 446m and 2425m.a.s.l
This quarry is also found around d Ejere town at a distance of about 15km ,having a geographical location
of 36p x = 04 44 372 y = 10 95 356m and z = 2218m.a.s.l (priority should be given to this site for sand
needed for concrete work)
1.6.3 Water
Water is available from the river itself at a negligible distance
From the test pits and other geological, hydro geological and geomorphologic investigations done on the
target area most of the engineering works that could be done on the area could be done without any
problems. In addition to the above mentioned reasons availability of natural construction materials near to
the project area could give a great contribution for the accomplishment of the project. Generally based on
those results a conclusion has been made that the project is feasible for construction in geotechnical top of
view.
2 HEAD WORK
2.1 2.1 DIVERSION WEIR
1.1.1 Introduction
Aleltu Tiko small scale irrigation project is aimed at ensuring food self sufficiency as well as
alleviating poverty by making use of surface water (Aleltu Tiko river). The project is intended to
irrigate 65 ha of land. Major activities during the execution of the project will be the construction
of head work, irrigation canals, drainage canals, and different irrigation and drainage structures.
canal, in order to divert the river water towards the canal, so as to ensure a regulated continuous
supply of silt-free water with a certain minimum head in to the canal.
❖ A weir with a shape that cannot easily be constructed by local manpower should not be
considered.
❖ The skill of the local builders, to perform as per design and specification.
❖ Taking into account the cited points and other factors, broad crest stone masonry weir type
with 1:1 slope of downstream face is adopted. The stone masonry embedded in cement
mortar will be constructed on the mass concrete (plum concrete).
P = 4.75√Q
P = 4.75√35 = 28.10 m
But, the length of the weir as these empirical formulae is very huge, so considering the physical
condition of the weir site, the peak flow discharge which pass through the channel and as the most
economical section to the project 7.00 m width is taken.
A diversion weir raises the water level on its upstream side to create the head necessary to divert
the flow through the canal intake. So the following data have been obtained from the topo map
and the previous design document.

Design considerations:
After the design peak discharge is calculated, it is obvious to find the T.W.D. which will be used
for deciding the bottom elevation of the downstream floor.
Cumulative Height, H = E ln – E lo
From Water depth - Discharge curve, T.W.D equivalent to the flood discharge is found to be
1.32m.
❖ The crest level should be set at desired height or level to be able to obtain the required
driving head to safely deliver the designed discharge to main canal.
❖ The weir crest should be set to allow a safely passage of maximum flood discharge within
designed weir crest length.
❖ The bed level of the under sluice should be below sill level of canal head regulator.
❖ The main canal at the head reach should not be too deep in order to avoid large excavation
work, to minimize construction cost and to reduce maintenance and side slopes stability
problems.
Q = CL (He) 3/2
He = (Q/CL) 2/3
Where,
Approaching velocity
Q
Va = 2 g ( He − h) and, Va =
( P + h) L
Q
= 2 g ( H e − h)
( P + h) L
Where,
V a2/2g = H - h = 2.05 - h
But, V a = ((Q/L (h + p)
Therefore h = 1.83 m
a. Energy method
hvo = H - h =0.22m
It is necessary to fined the jump height and to adjust the bottom level of the basin so that the water
surface level of the jump is a little higher than the D/S water surface level - say 20 ~
40cm.Therefore, the floor level of the stilling basin must be found by trial and error method.
Assuming the floor level is 0.50 m lower than the river bed. Say -0.50m
H = E0 = E1
Z =1.70m
E0 = H + Z
E0 = 3.75m
q = Q/b
q =5.00m3/sec/m
d1 +q2/2gd12 = 3.75m, using trial and error method the value of d1 are shown as below.
If the water surface of the jump is assumed to be 0.20 m higher the downstream water level.
Therefore, the bottom level of the stilling basin will be EL.1 =2379.92m
Using Conventional method length and depth of the stilling basin will be determined as follow
L=3(h F) ^0.5
L- Length of the basin (horizontal length of the downstream slope of the weir plus the length of
the downstream apron floor) m
h =1.83m
F =1.71m
Therefore, the stilling basin is so designed as to equipped with the floor length of 5.50 m and the
depth of d = 0.50 m and the transition length of L' = 5.50 m.
Properly designed the stilling basin dissipates the great majority of the turbulent energy in the
flow. At the outflow from the basin there remains a certain proportion of energy in the flow that
scours the d/s of the basin. The scour holes so formed may progress towards the structure and
results in structural failure. Such failures can be prevented by providing piles or cut- off at u/s and
d/s ends of the impervious floor, much below the calculated scour level. The depth of scour
can be calculated using Lacey's equation.
Let us provide u/s cut-off at depth of 1.25R (i.e.4.93 m from the top of u/s water level.
Let us, therefore, provide the u/s cut-off up to a bottom level of 2380.72m, i.e. 2.06m take 1.00m
u/s cut-off
Let us provide d/s cut-off at depth of 1.50R below the d/s water level (which is 2381.45m with
retrogression).
Let us, therefore, provide the d/s cut-off up to a bottom level of 2380.72m, i.e. 5.18m take 1.00m
d/s cut-off
Assume that the depth of the stilling basin is 0.50 m with the bottom elevation of 2380.22m.
Hence, the proposed gravity weir will be designed to resist, with sufficient factor of safety, the
three tendencies to destruction; overturning, sliding and overstressing. The basic section of the
weir can be determined using Bligh’s method as follows.
1.00
1.20
3.20
H max =1.20m
Therefore, it is necessary select the maximum head differential which usually occurs at the time
of flood often called as dynamic case. In this case the maximum differential H max is 1.71 m for
dynamic case and 1.20 m for static case. Therefore, Lane's method and H max = 1.71 m will be
taken to check whether the length of the apron is sufficient.
CH = 5.57m
L c = ∑L v + 1/3*∑L h ≥ CH
L c = ∑L v + 1/3*∑L h = 5.57m
According to Lane recommended ratios, this structure would be safe from piping on either Medium
Gravel. The base material of the river consists of hard rock. Therefore, the length of the apron is
sufficient to prevent the piping.

Sufficient freeboard should be provided for u/s and d/s wing walls in order to protect the walls and
embankments from being overtopping by surges, splash and spray, and wave action setup by the
turbulence of hydraulic jump and not to allow high flood water to bypass the diversion weir. The
following empirical formulae are used to determine the freeboard.
Helps to allow the removal of silt deposited near the intake pipe. This is designed to ensure
sufficient scouring capacity least to dispose off about 10.5% of the peak flood i.e. 3.5m3/s, this
value is at least greater than 2 times the intake capacity.
H d = water depth above the crest of the under sluice during high flood = 2.81m
The gate of a sluice can be a thick say 6mm sheet metal or other similar material.
Circular intake
Hence, using a 100% full pipe of diameter, the intake loss, h is calculated.
The size of the pipe is increased for ease of access during cleaning.
Fl = f*L/Ø p = 0.66m
V = Q/A =0.51m/s
Ht = 1.1*H =0.03m
h =0.03m
Q intake =0.11m3/sec
Top level of intake pipe = river bed level + sill height + pipe diameter
Since the top level of intake pipe 2381.82 m <= the crest level of the weir Steel bar mesh is used
at the inlet of the pipe to protect debris and other foreign materials. The design & drawings of
intake gate is used that of IDD standard gate design and drawings.

irrigation practice is designed and furrow irrigation method is selected. Each command area with
small channels (furrow) water reaches over the soil surface.
Canal layout is marked on the field and profile is taken for each rout of all secondary and tertiary
canals. The following points are considered while preparing the canal layout:
❖ The layout is done based on block areas to be irrigated by taking drains and ridges into
consideration.
❖ The alignment of secondary canal follows almost on the periphery of the command area as
a contour canal.
Canal design is used to decide the parameters like the depth of flow, bed width, flow velocity, etc.
These depend on design discharge, bed slope, and coefficient of roughness and side slope of canals
if the cross section is trapezoidal and Rectangular. Design discharge is the maximum discharge
that the canal is required to carry in any year .It depends on irrigation intensity, cropping pattern,
size of command area, duty and time factor.

As the hydrology study result the base flow of Aleltu Tiko River in the dry season from December
up to May is 22.15 lit/sec and minimum flow in wet season from June up to November is 78.35
lit/sec respectively. However the area which is could be irrigate by these two discharges are also
20ha and 50ha in these respective seasons, So to assure the required demand of the project without
any interruption, there are two ponds or storage Reservoirs are provided across secondary canals.
The river flow discharge throughout the year during wet and dry seasons are estimated based on
5days AMC time series analysis as the following table below, so that the main canal flow capacity
is designed for rectangular and trapezoidal section from the beginning up to end of the project to
carries the entire irrigation water required (0.1 m3/sec) for 50 ha of the command area. Releasing
10% of the base flow of the river to the downstream eco-system, the main canal takes 90% of the
base flow, and the design of Secondary and Tertiary canals are follows the same procedures of
canal design and listed below.

approach canal is 0.09 m. the peak discharge routing will also be neglected. Therefore the capacity
of the spillway should be designed to pass the peak flow discharge of 0.043m3/sec.
Then the critical depth dc for flow at the control section is:-
q = Q/B = 0.043m3/s/m
dc = [q2/g]1/3 = 0.067m
F = 1.000m
Vc = q/dc = 0.807m/sec
The value of d2/d1 and d1/dc corresponding to the values of F/dc can be read in Appendix B-1
d1 / dc = 0.165 and
d2 / d1 =2.053
d1 = 0.165*dc =0.011 m
d2 = 2.053*d1 =0.023 m
V1 = q/d1 =4.89m/sec
V2 = q/d2 =2.38m/sec
By comparing the above two values of El. C the lower bottom elevation of 2363.59m will be
selected.

There are three major footpath and three road crossings at the canal system of the Aleltu Tiko
irrigation scheme. The two road crossings are across Main canal at a chainage of 0 + 000 when the
secondary canal 1 & 2 branch from the Main canal and the remaining one when Tertiary canal
branch from SC2 at chainage 0 + 670. The width, (w) of the road depends on the width of existing
footpath width (local foot path width), which is used to cross cattle from one area to another, the
average width of crossing is 3.00m. Concrete pipe diameter, Ø 0.60m and 1m long, are provided
for the five meter wide, (L) roads at each road crossing.

(when the flow is less than the design flow of the canal). The width of each outlet is generally
proportional to the diversion of water to be made. In lined canal, a full gate opening at the intake
to the box is made covering approximately the same area as the canal section, since the canal
design to carry water at relatively high velocity. In case of earthen canals gate openings can be
dimensioned by assuming a velocity of about 1.5m/s in the opening section.

3.1.12 Turnout
The turnouts are designed to divert flow to each field canal on proportional bases during the maximum flow
and on rotational bases during the low flow (when the flow is less than the design flow of the canal). As it
has already mentioned before, since field canals are not provided, simple turnouts at the main,
secondary and tertiary canals, which directly take flow to the fields are provided. These turnouts
are provided on the main, secondary canals based on the available command area and topography.
At every 50 -100m distance between two field canals, one turn out is provided. The water surface
level in tertiary canals at off take points of canals is maintained 10 to 15cm higher than the existing
ground levels in the irrigable area for siphoning. The flow at each turn out (to each field canal) is
controlled by gate operation. There are 76 numbers of turnouts and they are designed proportionally
according to discharges in both parent and off take canals as follows.
