1 ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
1.1 General description of the study area

The study area is found in Hidabo-Abote district, North Showa zone of the Oromia regional state which is
10km far from Ejere town and 34km, 159km far from the Zonal capital Fiche and the metropolis Addis
Ababa respectively. The project area has a geographical location of 36p X-04 45 907m and Y-10 90 896m
and Z-2387m.a.s.l.

1.2 Objective

❖ To know the Geology ,Engineering geology and Hydro-geologic characteristic of the Catchment
❖ To identify water quality problems (if there is)
❖ To know the foundation material and recommend its depth by doing test pit along the axis of the
head work site
❖ To describe the lateral and vertical rock and soil stability of the river bank including their
engineering behavior
❖ To identify the geology along the main canal rout and recommend majors that should be taken
❖ To investigate and recommend the location of natural construction material (Rock for masonry ,
Coarse aggregate, Sand ,Clay for lining and fill and also Water) both in quality and quantity

1.3 Methodology

In this Geotechnical investigation two phases of study has been carried out:-

❖ Data collection and analysis in the office (desk study or preliminary study), and
❖ Field investigation and subsequent analysis of the collected data.

1.3.1 Preliminary study

• Through assessment of the existing pertinent published and unpublished reports. These
includes data’s collected from Topographic maps , Regional geology of the area from
Geological map of Ethiopia ,Hydrogeology of the area from Hydro geologic map of Ethiopia
and feasibility study documents conducted near to this area has been referred .After finishing
works that should be done on desk we have preceded to the next step which is field work.
1.3.2 Geo-traverse (field study)
❖ Field investigation along the axis of the head work and along the main canal by digging a
test pit ranging from 1m to 3m depth and the cross-sectional profile has been done

1
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

❖ Geology and engineering geological mapping of materials have been conducted along the
main left and right bank irrigation cannels and command area.
❖ Assessment of the Geomorphologic features having importance in the movement and
localization of surface water
1.4 Topography and drainage

1.4.1 Topography
The elevation of the area ranges from 2250m-3000m which has undulating topography and in some places
especially in the low land of the area the topography is plain. The figure below show the altitude of the area

1.4.2 Drainage
Most the streams in this area are perennial and some are seasonal but all of them drain into Abay River
having dendritic drainage pattern.

Figure 2 Drainage in the area

1.5 Geological investigation

1.5.1 Regional geology of the area

The regional geology of the study area is part of the Northern Ethiopian plateau which is contains all the
three major geological terrains of Ethiopia which are characterized by the following rock units of
proterozoic crystalline basement consisting of various high grade gneiss and schist, meta-
volcanicanosedimentary rocks, and associated syn to post tectonic plutonic rocks, Late Paleozoic to
Mesozoic marine and continental sedimentary rocks and Cenozoic, basic and felsic volcanic and associated
sedimentary rocks or in other word Mesozoic – Cenozoic sedimentary rocks, proterozic crystalline
basement rock and tertiary- Quaternary volcanic and sedimentary rock units.

1.5.2 Local geology of the area

As it has been mentioned above the local geology of the area is part of the Abay formation (middle Abay
tillite exposures) which is part of the northern Ethiopian plateau. From the outcrops and exposures the types

of rock found in the area are Sandstone, Sandy Lst, Gypsum and alternating shale and limestone and some
tertiary volcanic rocks that formed the northern Ethiopian plateau.

1.5.1.1 Geology of the head work site

At the head work site the rock exposed on the surface is scoracious basalt which is massive and not easy
to dig it with auger bit or any other digging material but it is in favour of our the masonry work, so based
on the above condition the expected foundation material is scoracious basalt and it depth doesn’t exceed
0.5 m

1.5.1.2 Geology along the main canal

As it has been tried to explain in the above local geology of the area section most of the area is covered
volcanic rocks overlain by thick clay soil. From the result of the test pits done along the main canal the
following recommendation has been made

❖ From 0m-201m along the main canal the canal should be lined due to the nature of the river bank
(Points taken for observation 1) location x=04 45 885m y=10 90 971m z=2386m and 2) x=0445
841 10 91 059m z=2383m)
❖ In between 201m-821m the test pit shows

Clay soil mixed with Gravel

0.1m

0.6m Clay soil (Reddish in color)

From this result the nature of the soil is clayey so the canal can be earthen canal. An outcrop of highly
weathered basaltic rock has been observed in b/n the distance 1.8km-1.81km along the main canal for about
100ms which forces us to lien our canal location x = 04 45 402 y = 10 92 688m z = 2330m.a.s.l.

1.6 Construction material

1.6.1 Rock for masonry works

Rock is available around the project (Head work site) with an average distance of 1km radius around the
area.

Location 36p X = 04 46 845 m, Y = 10 91 349 m and Z = 2600 m

1.6.2 Sand
There are two options to find good quality sand for both concrete work and also for plastering purpose

Option #1 Sire morose

This area is found near to Ejere town at an average distance of 3km in the Keble called Sire morose,
having a geographic location of X=04 46 614m Y 10 93 446m and 2425m.a.s.l

Option #2 Laga bonsa

This quarry is also found around d Ejere town at a distance of about 15km ,having a geographical location
of 36p x = 04 44 372 y = 10 95 356m and z = 2218m.a.s.l (priority should be given to this site for sand
needed for concrete work)

1.6.3 Water
Water is available from the river itself at a negligible distance

1.7 Recommendation and conclusion

From the test pits and other geological, hydro geological and geomorphologic investigations done on the
target area most of the engineering works that could be done on the area could be done without any
problems. In addition to the above mentioned reasons availability of natural construction materials near to
the project area could give a great contribution for the accomplishment of the project. Generally based on

those results a conclusion has been made that the project is feasible for construction in geotechnical top of
view.

PART II: - ENGINEERING DESIGN

2 HEAD WORK
2.1 2.1 DIVERSION WEIR

1.1.1 Introduction
Aleltu Tiko small scale irrigation project is aimed at ensuring food self sufficiency as well as
alleviating poverty by making use of surface water (Aleltu Tiko river). The project is intended to

8
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

irrigate 65 ha of land. Major activities during the execution of the project will be the construction
of head work, irrigation canals, drainage canals, and different irrigation and drainage structures.

1.1.2 Objective of the Project

The main objective of the head work is to provide sufficient irrigation water at upstream side of
the weir during the period of low flow. And the work, which are constructed at the head of the

canal, in order to divert the river water towards the canal, so as to ensure a regulated continuous
supply of silt-free water with a certain minimum head in to the canal.

1.1.3 Shape of the weir crest

Weirs differ in type and shape, but designed and constructed to serve the same purposes. The
following points are considered to determine the type and shape of the weir suited to this specific
site.

❖ A weir with a shape that cannot easily be constructed by local manpower should not be
considered.

❖ The availability of the skilled manpower for implementing it.

❖ The skill of the local builders, to perform as per design and specification.

❖ Taking into account the cited points and other factors, broad crest stone masonry weir type
with 1:1 slope of downstream face is adopted. The stone masonry embedded in cement
mortar will be constructed on the mass concrete (plum concrete).

1.1.4 Length of the weir

The length of water way should be adequate to pass the design flood safely. For alluvial river it is
usually determined from the Lacey wetted perimeter (p).

The wetted perimeter (p) is given by

P = 4.75√Q

Where Q = 35 design discharge (m3/s)

P = 4.75√35 = 28.10 m

But, the length of the weir as these empirical formulae is very huge, so considering the physical
condition of the weir site, the peak flow discharge which pass through the channel and as the most
economical section to the project 7.00 m width is taken.

2.2 2.2 Hydraulic Design of the Weir

A diversion weir raises the water level on its upstream side to create the head necessary to divert
the flow through the canal intake. So the following data have been obtained from the topo map
and the previous design document.
Oromia Water Work Design & Supervision Enterprise
10
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

Design considerations:

Design flood = 35m3/s

Maximum flood level = 2381.45masl

Minimum river bed level = 2380.72masl

Under sluice bed level = 2381.70masl

Afflux = 1.00 m and Retrogression = 0.5m,

Safe exit gradient for course sand (1/5 to 1/6)

1.1.5 Estimation of the water depth

After the design peak discharge is calculated, it is obvious to find the T.W.D. which will be used
for deciding the bottom elevation of the downstream floor.

12
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

From Water depth - Discharge curve, T.W.D equivalent to the flood discharge is found to be
1.32m.

1.1.6 Fixing weir crest level

At the location of the selected weir site, the minimum river bed level is approximately 2380.72
above mean sea level. The weir crest elevation is fixed with reference of this river bed elevation
considering the following factors.

❖ The crest level should be set at desired height or level to be able to obtain the required
driving head to safely deliver the designed discharge to main canal.

❖ The weir crest should be set to allow a safely passage of maximum flood discharge within
designed weir crest length.

❖ The bed level of the under sluice should be below sill level of canal head regulator.

❖ The main canal at the head reach should not be too deep in order to avoid large excavation
work, to minimize construction cost and to reduce maintenance and side slopes stability
problems.

Height of weir was calculated based on flowing data

. Average level of the highest field = 2375.90m

. Water depth required = 0.30 m

Oromia Water Work Design & Supervision Enterprise
13
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

. Head loss across the field = 0.00m

. Head loss at the turnout = 0.05m

. Slope of canal * Distance from the weir = 5.67m

. Head loss across head regulator = 0.00m

. Crest level of the weir = 2381.92m i.e.

Crest Height = Crest level - Upstream river bed level = 1.20m

1.1.7 Flow depth over the weir crest

Flow depth over the weir crest was computed by the following empirical formula.

Q = CL (He) 3/2

He = (Q/CL) 2/3

Where,

Q = peak flood discharge in m3/s = 35 m3/s

L = length of weir crest in m = 7.00 m

He = over flow depth including approaching velocity head in m

C = discharge coefficient which varies = 1.70

But, V a = ((Q/L (h + p)

((Q2/ [L (h + p)] 2 * 1/2g = 2.05-h

The Value of h can be calculated by trial and error method as follows.

River bed Elevation = 2380.72

D/S Water level =2382.04

Weir crest level =2381.92

Height of the crest, P =0.60 (silt Height = 0.60 m assumed)

1.1.9 Determination of the bed level of the stilling basin

By Trial and Error Method

It is necessary to fined the jump height and to adjust the bottom level of the basin so that the water
surface level of the jump is a little higher than the D/S water surface level - say 20 ~
40cm.Therefore, the floor level of the stilling basin must be found by trial and error method.

Assuming the floor level is 0.50 m lower than the river bed. Say -0.50m

Assumed EL.1 = EL.3 - 0.50

Assumed EL.1 =2380.22m

H = E0 = E1

Z = EL.0 - Assumed EL.1

Z =1.70m

E0 = H + Z

E0 = 3.75m

q = Q/b

Where, q - Unit peak discharge (m3/sec/m)

Q - Peak discharge (m3/sec) =35.00 m3/sec

b - Weir Length (m) = 7.00m

q =5.00m3/sec/m

From the energy rule E0 =E1 =d1 + hv1

Oromia Water Work Design & Supervision Enterprise

16
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

Where, d1 -Critical depth (m)

hv1 - critical velocity head (m)

Hence, E1 = d1 + hv1 = (d1 + v12/2g)*1/2g

E1 = d1 + hv1 = (d1 +q2/2gd12)

Z = E0 +E1 Therefore, d1 +q2/2gd12

d1 +q2/2gd12 = 3.75m, using trial and error method the value of d1 are shown as below.

Table 4 Pre-conjugate depth

d1 d1 + q2/2gd12 = 3.75 Remark

0.65 3.67
0.64 3.75 ok
0.63 3.84

So from this result d1 = 0.64 m

Critical velocity, V1 = q/d1 = 7.81m/sec

Fraud number, Fr = V1/√ (gd1) =3.12

Post conjugate depth, d2

d2 = d1/2[(√1+8Fr2) -1] =1.84m

If the water surface of the jump is assumed to be 0.20 m higher the downstream water level.

EL.1 = (WL.3 + 0.20) - d2

EL.1 = 2379.08m < assumed EL.1 =2380.22m

Therefore, the bottom level of the stilling basin will be EL.1 =2379.92m

The length of the stilling basin is:-

L = 4*d2 =7.36m take 7.50m

The result of the calculation can be shown as below:-

Oromia Water Work Design & Supervision Enterprise

17
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

Figure 8 Energy Profile of the weir

By Conventional Method

Using Conventional method length and depth of the stilling basin will be determined as follow

L=3(h F) ^0.5

d = 0.5(h F) ^0.5 and F/2≥d≥F/3 Where:-

L- Length of the basin (horizontal length of the downstream slope of the weir plus the length of
the downstream apron floor) m

d - Depth of the basin (m)

h- Overflow depth (m)

F- (U/S Water Level + Velocity Head)-(D/S Water Level)

h =1.83m

F =1.71m

L = L' = 3(h F) ^0.5= 5.31m take 5.50m

d = 0.5(h F) ^0.5= 0.88m take 0.50m

Therefore, the stilling basin is so designed as to equipped with the floor length of 5.50 m and the
depth of d = 0.50 m and the transition length of L' = 5.50 m.

1.1.10 Depth of Scour

Oromia Water Work Design & Supervision Enterprise

18
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

Properly designed the stilling basin dissipates the great majority of the turbulent energy in the
flow. At the outflow from the basin there remains a certain proportion of energy in the flow that
scours the d/s of the basin. The scour holes so formed may progress towards the structure and
results in structural failure. Such failures can be prevented by providing piles or cut- off at u/s and
d/s ends of the impervious floor, much below the calculated scour level. The depth of scour
can be calculated using Lacey's equation.

Hydraulic mean depth, R = 1.35*(q^2/f) ^0.333 Where,

R - Hydraulic mean depth

q - Discharge per meter length

f - Lacey's silt factor, for medium sand f = 1

Hydraulic mean depth, R =3.94m

Let us provide u/s cut-off at depth of 1.25R (i.e.4.93 m from the top of u/s water level.

Bottom level of u/s cut-off = u/s HFL - 1.25R = 2378.66m

Let us, therefore, provide the u/s cut-off up to a bottom level of 2380.72m, i.e. 2.06m take 1.00m
u/s cut-off

Let us provide d/s cut-off at depth of 1.50R below the d/s water level (which is 2381.45m with
retrogression).

Hence, the R.L. of bottom of d/s cut-off = 2375.54m

Let us, therefore, provide the d/s cut-off up to a bottom level of 2380.72m, i.e. 5.18m take 1.00m
d/s cut-off

1.1.11 Basic Section of the weir Body

Assume that the depth of the stilling basin is 0.50 m with the bottom elevation of 2380.22m.
Hence, the proposed gravity weir will be designed to resist, with sufficient factor of safety, the

three tendencies to destruction; overturning, sliding and overstressing. The basic section of the
weir can be determined using Bligh’s method as follows.

Top width, B = He/√r

Top width, B = 1.58m take1.00m

Bottom width, L = He + p/√r-1

Bottom width, L =2.71m take 3.20m

1.1.12 Length of the apron floor

Maximum Head on the structures

. For Dynamic Case

H max = Headwater - TWL, H max =1.71m

. For Static Case

H max = Weir Crest - River Bed Level

H max =1.20m

Therefore, it is necessary select the maximum head differential which usually occurs at the time
of flood often called as dynamic case. In this case the maximum differential H max is 1.71 m for

Oromia Water Work Design & Supervision Enterprise

20
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

dynamic case and 1.20 m for static case. Therefore, Lane's method and H max = 1.71 m will be
taken to check whether the length of the apron is sufficient.

L ≥ CH, Foundation material = Hard Pan Lane Creep Ratio, C =1.60

CH = 5.57m

Weighted creep length

L c = ∑L v + 1/3*∑L h ≥ CH

L c = ∑L v + 1/3*∑L h = 5.57m

Weighted Creep Ratio = L/H max

Weighted Creep Ratio = 3.25

According to Lane recommended ratios, this structure would be safe from piping on either Medium
Gravel. The base material of the river consists of hard rock. Therefore, the length of the apron is
sufficient to prevent the piping.

1.1.13 Free Board

Sufficient freeboard should be provided for u/s and d/s wing walls in order to protect the walls and

turbulence of hydraulic jump and not to allow high flood water to bypass the diversion weir. The
following empirical formulae are used to determine the freeboard.

D/S Freeboard = 0.1(V1 + d2)

D/S Freeboard = 0.97m

However adopt 0.50 m for u/s and d/s wing walls.

Top elevation of the u/s retaining walls = TWL+FB = 2384.25m

Top elevation of the d/s retaining walls = TWL+FB = 2382.54m

1.1.14 Design of scouring sluice

Helps to allow the removal of silt deposited near the intake pipe. This is designed to ensure
sufficient scouring capacity least to dispose off about 10.5% of the peak flood i.e. 3.5m3/s, this
value is at least greater than 2 times the intake capacity.

Using a broad crested weir formula, Q = C d* L* H d 3/2 Where,

Q = discharge through the under sluice = 3.5 m3/s

C d, coefficient of discharge = 1.7

Length of under sluice section,

H d = water depth above the crest of the under sluice during high flood = 2.81m

(h + H d) where, h is weir height and hd is design head

Hence L= Q/c d (H d) 3/2 = 0.44 m

Use L = 1.00 m (practical length has to be used)

The gate of a sluice can be a thick say 6mm sheet metal or other similar material.

Figure 11 Intake and sluice gate

1.1.15 Design of Intake

Circular intake

Intake capacity, Q (m3/s) = 0.10m3/sec

Length of RCC pipe, L (m) = 10.7m

Pipe Diameter, Ø (m) = 0.50 m

Roughness Coefficient, n = 0.014

Intake lose, h = (v2/2g) (FT)

Where FT = Entry + Exit +Friction loses = 0.5+1.0+Fl

And Fl = (f x L)/ Ø p, Where f = 124.6n2 /Ø p 1/3

Hence, using a 100% full pipe of diameter, the intake loss, h is calculated.

The size of the pipe is increased for ease of access during cleaning.

f = 124.6(0.014)2/ (Ø p) 1/3 =0.031 m

Fl = f*L/Ø p = 0.66m

FT= 0.5+1.0+F1 =2.16m

A = 3.14 *Øp^2/4 =0.20m2

V = Q/A =0.51m/s

Therefore, Total Head Loss, H = (V2/2g)* (f T) =0.03m

Oromia Water Work Design & Supervision Enterprise
23
Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

If 10% extra head is included, the total head becomes,

Ht = 1.1*H =0.03m

Therefore, the elevation of downstream water level is

D/s W.L = u/s W.L - Ht = 2382.17m

D/s G.L = d/s W.L - d1 = 2381.91m

Check: Using orifice formula

Q intake = C*A*(2gh) 1/2,

Where, C =0.73for submerged flow

h =0.03m

Q intake =0.11m3/sec

0.11m3/s > 0.1m3/s, OK!

Level of river bed = 2380.72 m

Weir Height, P =1.20 m

Level of intake at the intake gate = 2381.32m

Sill height, H = 0.60m

Crest level = river bed level + weir height = 2381.92m

Top level of intake pipe = river bed level + sill height + pipe diameter

Top level of intake pipe = 2381.82m

Since the top level of intake pipe 2381.82 m <= the crest level of the weir Steel bar mesh is used
at the inlet of the pipe to protect debris and other foreign materials. The design & drawings of
intake gate is used that of IDD standard gate design and drawings.

1.1.18 Left & Right Side River Bank Protection embankments

Due to provision of weir across the river, water level will rise on the upstream side of the structure.
The structure is designed and provided in restricted width of river. Raised water level may cause
out flanking of riverbanks near structure if the banks are not above afflux level. To prevent out
flanking, earthen protection embankments on flanks of weir are provided. The protection
embankments are provided from abutment of weir structure and extended up to the point where
required ground elevation corresponding with the top embankment elevation joins on the bank.
The top level of both the embankments is kept at an elevation of 2385.04 m above mean sea level.
The length of the right and left embankments are 6 and 4meter respectively. The maximum height
is about 3.00 meter above ground level and provided with 2 meter top width and 1:2 side slopes

on u/s and 1:1.5 on d/s. Cut off trench with 1.1 meter depth, 3 meter bottom width and 1:1 side
slope is proposed in order to prevent under seepage under the embankment.

3 IRRIGATION DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM DESIGN

3.1 3.1 CANAL SYSTEM

3.1.1 Description of Water Distribution System

The diverted water from the Aleltu Tiko River is to be distributed to the farm through a network
of canals by gravity flow. The physical purpose of irrigation is to satisfy the demands of crop water
requirement by increasing the moisture content of the soil in the root zone of the crop. For this
canal distribution system should be planned to convey the required amount of water from the outlet
as described above. In the case of the ‘ALELTU TIQO' irrigation scheme since gravity led

irrigation practice is designed and furrow irrigation method is selected. Each command area with
small channels (furrow) water reaches over the soil surface.

3.1.2 Canal Alignment (Canal Layout)

The Aleltu Tiko site has sufficient and suitable irrigable area on right sides of the river (see Fig.
22 the layout of the command area). The command area of this Irrigation project is50ha and
stretched along the right side of the main river. The proposed canal system of the scheme consists
of on main canal (MC-2834.44m long), two secondary canals (SC1- 1558m, SC2-986m long and
TC-320m long). SC1 branch from the main canal at chainage 0+980 with Grid Coordinates of
445446.46, 1091656.42 to irrigate 20.6ha of land, SC2 branch from the main canal at chainage
1+670 with Grid Coordinates of 445420.29, 1092290.12 to irrigate 971ha of land. And TC from
SC2 at chainage 0+670 with Grid Coordinates 445039.97, 1092806.39 branched out to irrigate
4.67ha of land. From MC, SC1and SC2, one Tertiary more than 75 turnouts are proposed. Along
the whole canal system there are 4 major drain crossings which require Drainage Culverts design
and more than 3 minor crossings which require culvert crossing. As the canal system passes
through villages and social infrastructures, more than3 road and footpath crossings are required.

Canal layout is marked on the field and profile is taken for each rout of all secondary and tertiary
canals. The following points are considered while preparing the canal layout:

❖ The layout is done based on block areas to be irrigated by taking drains and ridges into
consideration.

❖ Deep cutting and high banking is tried to be avoided

❖ The alignment of secondary canal follows almost on the periphery of the command area as
a contour canal.

3.2 3.2 Design of Canals

Canal design is used to decide the parameters like the depth of flow, bed width, flow velocity, etc.
These depend on design discharge, bed slope, and coefficient of roughness and side slope of canals
if the cross section is trapezoidal and Rectangular. Design discharge is the maximum discharge

that the canal is required to carry in any year .It depends on irrigation intensity, cropping pattern,
size of command area, duty and time factor.

Aleltu Tiko Small-Scale Irrigation Project Engineering & Geology Study Final Report

As the hydrology study result the base flow of Aleltu Tiko River in the dry season from December
up to May is 22.15 lit/sec and minimum flow in wet season from June up to November is 78.35
lit/sec respectively. However the area which is could be irrigate by these two discharges are also
20ha and 50ha in these respective seasons, So to assure the required demand of the project without
any interruption, there are two ponds or storage Reservoirs are provided across secondary canals.
The river flow discharge throughout the year during wet and dry seasons are estimated based on
5days AMC time series analysis as the following table below, so that the main canal flow capacity
is designed for rectangular and trapezoidal section from the beginning up to end of the project to
carries the entire irrigation water required (0.1 m3/sec) for 50 ha of the command area. Releasing
10% of the base flow of the river to the downstream eco-system, the main canal takes 90% of the

Where FT = Entry + Exit +Friction loses = 0.5+1.0+Fl

And Fl = (f x L)/ Ø p, Where f = 124.6n2 /Ø p 1/3

Hence, using a 100% full pipe of diameter, the intake loss, h is calculated.

The size of the pipe is increased for ease of access during cleaning.

f = 124.6(0.014)2/ (Ø p) 1/3 = 0.036m

Fl = f*L/Øp = 0.61m

After the pond is filled up to the maximum pond level the peak discharge that out flow from the

3.1.9 Drainage Culverts

There are three stream crossings which the canal alignment crosses at chainage 0 + 600, 1 + 360
and 2 + 180 that needs cross drainage structures to pass the irrigation water through main canal
over the natural drain, such that the drainage water runs below the canal either freely or under
siphoning pressure. Hence, the HFL of the Drain is sufficiently below the bottom of the canal, so
that the drainage water flows under gravity, the structure is known as an aqueduct. However, when

the HFL of the drain is higher than the canal bed and the water passes through the aqueduct barrels
under symphonic action, the structure is known as siphon aqueduct.

3.1.11 Division Box

Division structures are provided at the canal system, which are used to divide the flow from the
main canal between two secondary canals and from these secondary canals to other traditional
tertiary canals. The division boxes are designed to divert flow to each canal on proportional bases
during the maximum flow and on rotational bases during the low flow (when the flow is less than
the design flow of the canal). There are three Division boxes which are provided at Station No.49,
No.83+5 on main canal and Station No.33+10 on secondary canal 2, (SC2) to divert flow to each
canal on proportional bases during the maximum flow and on rotational bases during the low flow

(when the flow is less than the design flow of the canal). The width of each outlet is generally
proportional to the diversion of water to be made. In lined canal, a full gate opening at the intake
to the box is made covering approximately the same area as the canal section, since the canal

design to carry water at relatively high velocity. In case of earthen canals gate openings can be

The general weir equation is used to design the division boxes:

Q = CLH3/2 , Where, Q - Discharge (m3/sec)

C - Discharge coefficient = 1.70

L- Crest length (m)

H - Water depth on the crest (m)

From the broad crested weir formula, the head over crest can be fixed as follows:

h2 = (Q/C*B2)2/3

Let the throat width B2 is equals to 0.25 m from the broad crested weir formula, the head over
crest can be fixed as follows:

Sill height (above bed), h s = U/S FSL - Driving head

Sill height (above bed), h s = 0.33m say 0.30m

Thickness of sill, t = 2/3*height of sill

Thickness of sill, t = 0.22m 0.30

Throat length, L d = 3*water depth d/s (d2)

Throat length, L d = 0.56 m say 0.60m

3.1.12 Turnout
The turnouts are designed to divert flow to each field canal on proportional bases during the maximum flow
and on rotational bases during the low flow (when the flow is less than the design flow of the canal). As it
has already mentioned before, since field canals are not provided, simple turnouts at the main,
secondary and tertiary canals, which directly take flow to the fields are provided. These turnouts
are provided on the main, secondary canals based on the available command area and topography.
At every 50 -100m distance between two field canals, one turn out is provided. The water surface
level in tertiary canals at off take points of canals is maintained 10 to 15cm higher than the existing
ground levels in the irrigable area for siphoning. The flow at each turn out (to each field canal) is

controlled by gate operation. There are 76 numbers of turnouts and they are designed proportionally
according to discharges in both parent and off take canals as follows.

Available data:-

Using orifice formula Q = C d. A.√ (2gHL)

Where, Q - Full Supply Discharge (m3/sec)

Discharge Coefficient, C d = 0.73 for submerged flow

HL – working head or loss of head between u/s and d/s = 0.05 m

A - Area of pipe = πd2/4

g = 9.81
